David Kunkle Says He's Not Hiding Laura Miller's Support Because He Doesn't Have It Yet

Former Mayor Laura Miller praises then-Police Chief David Kunkle in November 2009 after he announced he was calling it quits
She spoke at former Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle's retirement press conference. She appointed Mike Rawlings to be the city's homeless czar. She was mayor when Ron Natinsky replaced Sandy Greyson on the city council and served with him for two years. Edward Okpa finished third on the ballot the year she was elected to her first full term as mayor.

Ex-Mayor Laura Miller knows all four mayoral candidates well, but when we reached out to her last week to talk about the race, the former Observer columnist refused to comment. We couldn't help but contact her again after DMN'er Gromer Jeffers reported yesterday that Miller "has been raising money and securing support for Kunkle behind the scenes."

"I am hosting a reception with Steve at my home for Kunkle, for which we have both mailed invitations, and we are also listed as hosts on a second fundraiser at Mitchell Rasansky's home," Miller said in an email.

Although Miller's a Democrat and Rasansky's a Republican, the two voted similarly and were often on the losing side of 13-2 votes while serving together on the city council. The mayor's race is nonpartisan.

Miller's efforts are hardly a surprise. After all, Miller's husband, former state Rep. Steve Wolens, is Kunkle's campaign treasurer, and Miller and Wolens are close with Kunkle and his wife, Sarah Dodd, who met Kunkle and Miller while working as a City Hall reporter at KTVT-Channel 11.

The News's story also indicated Kunkle's campaign "has sought to minimize Miller's support," but Kunkle emphatically denied that allegation to Unfair Park. In fact, far as he knows, Miller hasn't endorsed his candidacy.

"Frankly, I don't know where she's at on that issue," he says. "The last time I saw her comments, she said she liked me and Rawlings."

Kunkle admits Miller has given him advice, but he stresses he hears it from "every single person" closely watching his campaign.

"What happens is the people that follow campaigns give you unsolicited advice, and they all give you tough love," he says.

But he wants her support, right?

"I think all the candidates would want to have her support," he says. "Most of us want to drum up all the support we can with almost no exceptions."

We're awaiting a reply from Miller about whether she has plans to endorse a candidate.

In other Kunkle endorsement news, Jim Moore, the first candidate to announce for mayor who subsequently quit the race before the filing deadline, just announced his support for the city's former top cop.

"Our City is facing some tough challenges -- and we need a great leader capable of seeing us through these challenging times," Moore says in a release sent to Unfair Park. "David Kunkle understands how government works and how public policy decisions are made. He understands economic development. David Kunkle has widespread support throughout the city with strong relationships at Dallas City Hall and with community leaders. I believe David Kunkle is a positive leader who can bring people together from all sectors to make our community stronger."

By the way Sam, in one of my old post on another story that the Observer wrote, I pointed out that it sounded exactly like Laura Miller's campaign even before the DMN did their story. If I could tell, a smart man like you knew.

Have to say ,after having looked at my "3rd world street"for 4 years straight after paying about $9k for taxes, that anyone who lives in my area might be more ready to fix this stuff than someone that doesn't.As for the Toll Road ,you gotta be on some serious drugs to even consider that that dream may ever come true.Who knows , we may even get a city skatepark (considering that more people skateboard than play tennis)........I'm not holding my breath...Kunkle all the way.

Sam, come on. This is not news. Most people in the black community knows that Laura is behind Kunkle and find it hard to believe that a writer such as you never knew until DMN did a story. The Observer loves Laura and is doing everything in your power to help Kunkle. Tell the truth. Are you afraid that linking Laura with Kunkle will hurt him? Don't be, we already know. Kunkle is a liar if he says otherwise,

Can't think of any area where David Kunkle has flip flopped. Steve Wolens is Laura's husband, but his endorsement is not her endorsement.David Kunkle wants City Hall's focus to be on encouraging people to keep living in Dallas by protecting our neighborhoods. Rawlings thinks all of us who do not live in Preston Hollow or gated communities should be happy to have more group homes and problematic people in our less important neighborhoods. David & Sarah live on a regular street in East Dallas -- real people who know this city. Both have done so much to clean up City Hall.

Laura remains the most wholesome looking well groomed mayor / ex mayor in a while. I was sorry that she didn't get Mr. Rawlings pot holes fixed, however.

Who the F is he kidding.Just once I'd like one politician to tell the truth. Like for a whole day.Kunkle's wife is bestest best friends with Laura Miller. As in BFF.And, Laura's husband is Kunkle campaign treaurer. Why oh why does David Kunkle insist on insulting our intelligence by "pretending" that he has no connection or support from Laura Miller

Or, is he just insulting the intelligence of every black voter?Hoping they will swallow this line of crap and look the other way to the Kunkle/Laura Miller strong connection. As in: connected at the hip.

Anyone who does not repudiate a toll road in the Trinity flood plain is not qualified to be mayor.

Laura Miller's endorsement is probaly the worst endorsement next to Tom Leppert. Well maybe Dwayne Caraway is in this race too... Once again PUNKLE doesn't want to step on any fragment of a chance with any possible voter that he has an will not choose sides for anything. So I guess to make this fair since she is not "endorsing" anyone, will Miller host a fundraiser for the other 3 candidates???

Also, the references above show that Miller knows Rawlings, Natinsky and Okpa through her work/campaign as Mayor. Her speaking at Punkle's press conference was as Ex-Mayor (aka personal). Not getting paid, not on the clock, two years after she left City Hall.

Truth be told, if she didn't do such a horrible job as Mayor this wouldn't even be a discussion and Punkle would easliy ask and accept the endorsement...

I beg to differ about the newsworthiness of the item. Kunkle and Miller weren''t given an opportunity to respond, and I gave them just that. And, contrary to your comment, the Observer is not "doing everything in your power to help Kunkle."

Punkle is not a flip flop because he will never choose a side. Just like he will or will not say that Miller is endorsing him. What is it with a regular street and Punkle is a regular person thing. Like when did it become a crime to make money and have nice things in this world.

Ah yes, the recurrent "pothole" theme. I wonder how times that will be old chestnut will be used in mayoral candidate commercials ?

David Kunkle is the only candidate that meets that criteria. Just came from Mayoral debate held by at Dallas Democratic Forum. Natinsky and Okpa still support it when funding is available (as if that day will ever come). Rawlings' answer was that the reality is there is no money for the toll road now or in the foreseeable future, so he doesn't see it happening, which is correct, but he wouldn't say no altogether to the idea of a toll road in a floodway.

You gave him the opportunity and he lied. The only difference in the DMN and the Observer is that the DMN openly supports a candidate and the Observer throws rocks at the other candidate and pretends the are impartial which why people should not let either one of you influence their decision.

Kids often taunt other kids by making fun of their names.

Adults don't tend to think much of adults that do the same.

Ask Why?

Yeah, Kunkle's great at telling you what you want to hear.

Because his wife is a public relations pro.

He's just way too flip/floppy for me.

They should be getting pretty good at covering and lying because they had to try to cover their strong Avi Adelman connection. They've had to conceal that Kunkle's wife (news reporter) was the one, with Laura Miller help, who exposed the story that led to Don Hill, Teri Hodge, et al, going to prison.

And, Kunkle's wife's PR company has been fighting to diminish and block Preservation Dallas from gaining ground in many areas.

No should feel the need to conceal they helped send crooked politicians to jail. While it might not be true of you and your friends, others don't find corruption acceptable.

I was there. You, whoever you are, weren't. And if all you have to hang your hat on is attacking Kunkle's wife Sarah, well, that's about as lame as it gets.

David Kunkle would vote no on building a high-speed tollway in a floodway. I'm good with that.
