Arts Magnet Supporters to Stage Community Meeting (Rally, Really) at Wyly Tomorrow

While we await some return phone calls, this just in: There's a "community meeting" scheduled for tomorrow night to discuss possible cuts at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing & Visual Arts. Per the Dallas Friends of Public Education, the meeting -- which I've been told is really more of a "rally" -- is scheduled to run from 7 till 8 p.m. at the Wyly Theatre, during which, DFPE says, attendees can "hear about the strategic plan that is unfolding to fight for BTW and public education in the state of Texas" and "collectively engage in the dialogue that we are all having individually."

For those who may have missed it, on the district's list of Possible Reductions by Campus, Arts Magnet could lose as many as 42 of its 89 full-time employees should the district have to trim its budget by more than $250 million.

I am watching Rachel Maddow which I recorded from earlier this evening. Apparently 81% of Americans believe that millionaires should be taxed more. Thus we have www.TexasFlatTax.com to even the tax rate between the poor and rich in Texas. If Texas HB 354 were to pass into law, then we would have a statewide vote in November to approve a state income tax of 3% on all income over $150,000 a year and less than $250.000 a year. Then for all income between $250,000 and half a million they would pay 4% of income in a tax. For income over half a million to a million the tax would go up to 5%. Finally, for all income over a million the tax would be 6%. Thus if you made $2 million dollars a year, which is the average for the richest 100,000 families in Texas, you would be paying an additional $98,000 in taxes. How hard would that hurt your family? That money would hire more than one teacher, add one job to Texas, and allow about 100 students to be in classrooms of 25 students instead of 33 or more. HB 354 will generate $10 billion more in income each year. We must share the burden for the agony Texas is in. HB 354 is very fair and will allow the progress Texas has been making to continue. I'm a student at Booker T., and hearing about the budget cuts that might be pushed upon my school sound horrendous. Why would DISD want to trim the budget of a school who brings national recognition to Dallas? Mr. Hinojosa, why don't you just cut the enormous budgets going to excessive sports such as football and baseball, instead of cutting budgets from the arts?! More jobs are pursued and taken in the arts..... the chance of making a living in professional sports is slim to none. The prioritization of sports and the immediate cuts to the arts is stupid.

I know it's hard to trust government sometimes but I've wondered if it would be better to eliminate all the local school districts and set them up as county school districts. Still pretty local and would eliminate a lot of administration expenses we now have with all the seperate board offices and officers we now have in Dallas county (DISD, CFISD, Garland ISD, Coppell ISD, etc, etc)
It's sad that teachers will get fired and schools will be closed while DISD moves forward in building new schools like O.M. Roberts...NOTE this school was just renovated a few short years ago now it is scheduled for demolition and 22 million more tax dollars will be used to rebuild and destroy a neighborhood to put in parking lots in-between remaining homes! Let us re-vote on the Bond monies that were allocated for new buildings so, we can express that we want our tax dollars to go towards better education, better compensation and better preservation of schools. I have a big fat scrapbook of newspaper clippings from the early 90s. I should bring it up there and show some kids how we handled threats to our school back then.

Why would they kill the school that brings national recognition to this sorry district?
Of course we need local control, but as long as you have government employees like HD102 Rep Stefani Carter, who adamantly believes Austin knows best, we will never make progress.
Again, this is why we need local district control, not to mention the ability to spin off the DISD into smaller "neighborhood-level" districts that can control their own budgets and hiring
