When DART, DFW, Dallas Courts and DISD Close Up, You Know It's a ... Cat-ice-strophe!

• I guess your a pro at driving on ice through high ass over passes--but your right people in Dallas cant handle it, but its usually just the driving without ice is a challenge for most of them!

• The Dallas courthouses were NOT closed. The courts were closed, the judges stayed home, but the hard-working clerks were expected to be at their post. Thanks Gary Fitzsimmons, John Warren, and Clay Jenkins!

• "Nothing short of the End of Days gets the Dallas Independent School District to close its doors." Give me a break. It's not the weather that closed the schools. Just the fact that people in Dallas are not equipped to handle it!

• Here's the funny thing about "snow" days (I tell my students they should really be called "ice" days bc that's the only way DISD cancels): My students act like snow days are an oasis in the desert, the Holy Grail, and the missing link all rolled in one. The day before a potential "snow" day, their eyes sparkle with anticipation and hope. They ask me repeatedly what I think the odds are that schools will close. It never occurs to them that they can actually stay home any day they want or that many of them have had so many absences already I have to sign truancy forms before each class. And it's not the weather they're looking forward to: it's school being canceled. I think we shouldn't tell them we have a Spring Break. I think the Friday before it, the district should go on the news and say that, due to the kids' hard work, the district had decided to give them a WEEK OFF. The kids would go crazy. Or we could call their house every morning of Spring Break at 4:45 am and tell them school had been canceled for the day.

• At 11:23 last night, two glasses of Marker's Mark in, "cat-ice-strophe" <i>sounded</i> brilliant. Alas.

• Cat-ice-strophe is nice, but I still prefer Icepocolypse.

• It is sort of fun when you realize the reporters on storm duty at the High Five or other mixmasters in DFW, actually seem to be enjoying the fact that the story is actually much more newsworthy than their previous stints in the same spots through the years. . My favorite in past years was a reporter trying to find some "black" ice to show the viewers. By definition black ice is usually invisible to the eye hence called black because you can see the asphalt through it.

• I took DART into work. The 164 and Bus routes were working and right on time. Read the paper. Man, it's cold out there though.
