What's the Matter, Protesters? You Aren't Afraid of John Wiley Price, Are You?

Categories: Get Off My Lawn

Oh, man. You guys call that a protest? You went down there yesterday to tell the Dallas County Commissioners Court what you think of them, and they slapped the spit out of your mouths. Told you to sit down and be quiet. And you did.

People, that's just embarrassing.

It's why we can't have protest movements in Dallas. People here are too obedient. Gay rights, black activism, Tea Party -- doesn't matter. There's something in the water.
If the mob in Tahrir Square had been made up entirely of members of the Dallas Tea Party, all Mubarek would have had to do to shut the thing down was tell them all to go sit in time-out.

That's what Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins did yesterday. People got up to criticize the commissioners court over last week's John Wiley Price outburst ("You are all white. You can go to hell.") Jenkins told them to sit down and be quiet. So they did.

Apparently Jenkins has shifted from a policy of running his meetings as middle-school lunch-room free-for-alls to a policy by which members of the public are not allowed to say anything he deems critical of the commissioners, individually or as a body, at all, whatsoever.

Funny. I just came across a similar policy in a book I'm reading called The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom, by Evgeny Morozov. He's talking about laws in Thailand that make it illegal to publish anything critical of the Thai royal family, including doing so on blogs or by Twitter.

From yesterday's protest, which, let's face it, wasn't much of one
The Thai government invented an ingenious mechanism for enforcing the law, a website that encouraged citizens inform on each other by sending links to Internet sites that contained illegal criticism of the royals. The author claims Thai police were able to shut down 5,000 illegally critical sites in the first 24 hours that the site was set up in 2009. (It was called protecttheking.net, but the address now goes to a British financial services site.)

You know what's scary? If Jenkins put up a site called ProtecttheCommissioners.net, I worry that most of the Dallas Tea Party would turn itself in out of sheer obedience.

People, you got to shut the commissioners court down. Down! Shut it down! You can't be such wimps. When you wuss out like that, you're just encouraging them to be even worse. Look what happened. Now Jenkins thinks people are only allowed to talk if they express flattery of the court.

Is that where you're going to leave it? You know, I hate to say it, because it's stereotyping, which I know is not right, but the first time I saw one of you guys on TV in a three-cornered hat, I thought, "These people are not a factor."

Be real. Do something real. Pastor Stephen Broden was down there. What about all that big talk during your congressional campaign, Pastor? You know what I'm talking about.

i told you white folks, wasn't no black folks gonna come downtown to uphold JWP. one thing we scared and I think that is why the white crowd was smaller than expected and 2. we don't up hold wrong, read my lips. black folks do not hold up wrong. I wish white folks would quit saying that. The antiprotesters are probably paid. At least one pro JWP speaker was his paid administrative assistance and should not have been allowed to take up county speakers time. Wasn't no riot wont be no riot. Stand Up everybody black and white.

Sorry but, those are really crummy signs.....

But then again, they at least made a sign, which is more than you did.

I don't think we did such a bad job. Considering there were 40 people outside and 60 inside the court on a work morning, I figure we did pretty OK. And if you throw in the fact that it was the FOURTH week we were down there, I think we did fabulously! That's a long time for one protest to last. We'll keep keeping on and get something done. In some respects you're right, though, Schutze. Our protesters are not the ankle-breaking, hood-riding, windshield-wiper snapping types that John Wiley Price's Warrior group is (was) and we never will be. We don't want JWP or anyone else to be able to say that we're a violent, racist mob. After all, he did have Dallas County Homeland Security call the FBI to say that we were bringing the KKK in last Tuesday. One false move on our parts and the men in black would have been all over us. Thanks for your support (I think?). We have some ideas, but any feasible suggestions for next steps are welcome! Oh, and for the rest of you that are talking big about us getting tough, feel free to meet us at Commissioners Court next Tuesday at 9AM. Your tough talk is sexy and all, but we need warm bodies to pack the court. PS: Go to hell, you're all white!

Realistic: you guys are great. And Rome wasn't built in a day. And nobody else is even trying. And you're all white, and you can go to hell.

Jim, I love you, but you still owe us an article for the day. You owe Robt, or whomever signs your checks (wait, you DO get paid something don't you?) some research, and some reporting. Sorry, thought you were gonna skate the day with this, but the Thai internet censorship program doesn't count, and wasn't explained well enough. I need some meat on the bone--maybe I'll come grab a chicken, but if you'd clean it first, that would be cool.

I wish JWP had a dislike button.

What do you expect Jim. If you protest too much, John Wiley Price is likely to go completely postal and really go off the edge. Be very afraid. John Wiley Price is a ticking time bomb ready for his "spree." Tick, tick, tick...

Really, I'm so concerned about Mr. Price going off again about his obsession with race in any reference to the work "black" or "dark" that I now agree with Mr. Price that "black holes," "devil's food cake," "black mambas," "black Dahlia," tuxedos, "dark chocolate," etc. are all a conspiracy by "the man" to keep John Wiley Price down.

Be very afraid Dallas. Be very afraid.

JWP will go off one day while acting in his official capacity and let tax payers of Dallas county pay the legal settlement. He will then 'white wash' the situation, end up with a 'carte blanche' to go away, and will then get a guest editorial job with the DMNs to continue his snow job.

Looks like they're doing something to me, the question is, why aren't you doing anything Schutze? You're supposed to be the big, brave alt weekly journalist around these parts, but all you've done is your usual schtick bitching about whitey and the Tea Party. Never seen you afraid to call out a racist, until now that is, so step up to the plate and call Price out for being the racist you know he is.

It's not Jim's place to lead the charge. His role is only as the Greek chorus, murmuring harmlessly on the sidelines so that JWP doesn't ever wind himself up enough to bite the head off of one of Jim's wife's chickens and sip from the neck during the next CC meeting. Man has to weigh his priorities, provoking JWP v. provoking wife. I'd say he's made the smart decision.

On a related note, is it just me or is Clay Jenkins coming off as nothing more than JWPs yippy little dog.

Seriously, he reminds me of the mouthly 9 year old that hides behind his bigger teenage brother....

TheRealDirtyP1
TheRealDirtyP1

Yeah that was weak, and JWP still poked at them. I'm wondering if JWP is open to free speech about someone calling him derogatory terms while they speak. Hell no he's not open to it, so for him to stand behind free speech is ridiculous. Nothing will change. There's no fire or passion, not enough to bring him down. I think we're pretty thick skinned when it comes to black on white racism. If it was the other way around, totally different story.

That's the problem with Dallas folks. They don't have the 'fire in the belly' until after the fact. Not until something is taken away like their TV remote or $10.00 gas for their SUV will they sit up and take notice. A couple of years ago, everyone thought that the $3.00 a gallon was going to 'change every part of our lives'. Yeah, right. As a parting gift Mayor Tom has gifted our city with more WalMarts and we just keep moving on. Not wimps, not wuss, I'm thinking the 'P' word. Can we use that?Welcome to Dal-troit

Because everyone is busy telling them that "fire in the belly" means un-viable as a candidate!! Dallas is schizophrenic! Which is it? Do you want somebody who is afraid to make an omelet, or do you want somebody who isn't afraid to break some eggs?????

I'm confused by the headline. Sounds like "prostesters" almost have the balls you demand, but aren't quite "prostaters".
