Up in the Air? Not Exactly, As One Runway's Good to Go at Love Field. But the Other? Well ...

Below, in the comments, Brenda Marks wonders what the eff's going on at Love Field, where all is most definitely not clear. So I called Frank Librio, PIO at City Hall, to see what gives. He asked around and reports back: "The long runway's open" and can handle takeoffs and landings, but Southwest Airlines does not yet have its operations in full swing. Says Librio, that's scheduled to begin shortly -- sometime around noon.

Southwest says it'll have a spokesperson call back shortly with further info. Per its winter-weather advisory for Love Field: "We have cancelled all of our Wednesday morning flights to/from DAL. Our resumption of service is contingent upon the conditions of the runways, taxiways, other airport services, and city's infrastructure to/from the airport." Our message has been passed along, per the nice woman who answered the phone, since all of SWA's spokespeoples are "working remotely today."

As for the second Love Field runway: "We're working on clearing the shorter runway," says Librio, "but I don't know when that'll be open yet." Expect an update. At some point.

Update at 12:27 p.m.: Ashley Rogers at Southwest tells Unfair Park that the airline is "hoping to begin operations by 1 p.m." But she cautions: "That would be limited operations. We are hoping to get some flights in and out by 1 p.m."

When asked when SWA will be fully operational, she says: "It's too early for us to tell on that, just because of the weather that has moved through the whole system. It's a ripple effect. But as the day goes on, we hope to get up and running full operations later this evening, but we'll have to see how it goes."

Southwest Airlines had to shut down today because all of their employees keep getting jury duty at 'change fee' court.

Forget SWA. Just put boy toy in town car to DFW to catch AA flight departing at 3:45. Called SWA to cancel Mr. A-list-business-select ticket and turns out his 5 pm moved to 6:15 pm had already been cancelled. No email. No phone call. Now that's service. Been watching sky from my office window. One airplane -- Continental Express - landed at 2:10 pm. Nothing else. Oh, and boy toy called from car to report huge plume of black smoke coming from Parkland Hospital. I'm starting to feel like a stringer.

Oh, Dallasites, I swear. People are really surprised and angry that there might be delays/cancellations at an airport after a winter storm? Yawn, what a non-story.

We oughta make old man Wright come over and chip all the taxiway ice off. What a scam.

Rob, Pablo (my beloved) being the former ABC news correspondent that he is, had a long talk during his wait this morning with a Love Field police officer, who explained that they have no way to clear the ice off the taxiways even though the ground crews have been working diligently to do just that. Until they can (which according to the officer they don’t know when because they have no equipment to deal with it as DFW does) they can’t tow in or back up aircraft to the gates. That's a big, big, large, huge problem, considering (I'm speculating) that many of those cash-cow Super Bowl fans are trying to fly via SWA. I'm guessing they are going to be as non-responsive as possible on this story. I know I would.

Had you all signed up for e-mail/text updates from SWA?

downtowner -- you miss the point. Nothing is flying in or out of Love Field. Nada. Yet every TV station and DMSnooze says "runway open, no problem." Guess what. That's not enough.

Duh. Yes. And AA flight 1517 departed DFW on time at 3:45 pm. Praise little baby Jesus.

Brenda: And what does Southwest's website say when you check flight status? Did you sign up for e-mail / text updates from SWA? Not sure why you would rely on DMN/TV to determine whether your Sig O's flight was cancelled/delayed/rescheduled/etc. It seems like you're complaining vociferously about something that comes with the territory during any inclement weather.

Again, point missed. Point which I was trying but clearly failed to make was that all those reporters who are standing by the side of the freeway saying "Look! There's ice on the road! And trucks are stuck!" should maybe go somewhere and check out why the City infers all is well at Love when it's clearly not. And I too wondered why in the hell every cop in Dallas was parked along the airport entry road and in the median. Especially since nobody was there. Like they failed to get the memo.
