I refuse to jump up and down and scream about John Wiley Price. There's this story floating around the media that they had to shut down yesterday's meeting of the Dallas County Commissioners Court because Price had a meltdown when some in the peanut gallery called him the county's "chief moolah."

Please. First of all, the guy didn't call him chief moolah. It's mullah. He called him chief mullah -- an Islamic term for teacher or leader.

Second. Price did not have a meltdown. He was very calm. He made an observation about the people who had come to the meeting to complain about his role in the firing of Dallas County Elections Director Bruce Sherbet.

Price said, "You're all white. Go to hell."

He said it very calmly, according to the tape I saw. And he said it after County Judge Clay Jenkins was already in the process of shutting down the meeting.

Jenkins wasn't shutting down the meeting because Price told the people to go to hell. He was shutting down the meeting to stop the people from criticizing Price in front of the TV cameras.

In effect, Jenkins was telling them to go to hell too.

Hey, at least he didn't say "whitey." The man's a statesman.

Who dares to be shocked by any of this? The Dallas Morning News editorial section Sunday ran an excellent Q&A between Price and editorial-board member Jim Mitchell in which Price said without any ducking or dodging that he had been the front-man in Sherbet's firing and did it for political reasons, to diminish what Price saw as the dominance of Republicans over the local elections process.

Mitchell asked tough questions and did a good job challenging Price. But generally The Dallas Morning News editorial page has been one of Price's principal supporters, as when Price was working to cripple the Inland Port in South Dallas.

The way it works is this: Price plays the race card in public but works for the old white guys behind the scenes, against the interests of his own constituency. That sits fine with the city's power structure. The recently elected county judge, Jenkins, is subordinate to Price in the running of the court.

Nobody downtown sees a single thing wrong with any of it. Nobody in leadership in the city really minds. So why should I?

I know an up standing elected official would not hand in his resignation because "Head Mullah (nigga) in Charge " told him to. All of these comments are very interesting. I am speaking Not for Mr. Price and Not against Mr. Price. No, there is no provocation great enough to warrant or excuse Price telling all of the white people that they can go to Hell. In a public government setting, officials do not have the right to yell, insult, or obstruct citizens from expressing their Constitutionally-granted right to seek redress for a wrong committed against the County by, let's say enthusiastically encouraging, one of the best EA's in this State to resign. Although I will agree that the speaker was a "jerk of the first order," a public official DOES NOT get to tell people to go to Hell without consequences. What kind of example is he setting for other County employees?

It doesn't expressly bar a review by the Elections Commission; however, it doesn't expressly allow one either. In lieu of clear statutory guidelines, it is customarily and widely accepted by EVERY county in the State of Texas that utilizes the position of Elections Administrator for the Commissioners' Court to review the performance of the EA, just as they would any other appointed department head. In legal terms, this is called a precedent. Additionally, a Texas Attorney General's Opinion has stated that the County Elections Commission does not possess the authority to discipline the administrator (short of termination, which is statutorily allowed); at best, they could forward their findings to the Commissioners' Court for disposition.

"No performance evaluation was allowed at that [Election Commission] meeting, so...." Is there a citation you've found in the Texas Election Code that says that? I haven't found where TEC or state law bars the Election Commission from discussing or evaluating the performance of the Elections Administrator and the his/her department. Is this like the Tea Partiers claiming that much of government should be scrapped because it wasn't specifically called for in the Constitution? I kinda like the EPA, FCC, FAA, etc.

He should have been ordered out of order and the commissioners should at least give him a public rebuke at the next meeting. They try to ignore him but these situations can get out of order. Have we forgotten about the man who went to courthouse in Ft. worth and shot and killed folks, have we forgotten about Congresswoman Giffords. This is a serious situation and John should have been redirected. Jenkins showed the public that he is afraid of John also. Manipulation of the elections department is clearly the end game. Sam's post below illustrates a stark "policy" shift in the department. Apparently DA Watkins has assumed authority for allowing, or refusing, the release public records filed with the department. It was a bloodless coup overall. Is the Inland Port dead? I tried to get JimS to respond about a blog post he wrote where he credited JWP for killing it but I never read anything about it in the Observer after the last reporting of bankruptcy due to the economy taking a dump. I thought that Jim Foster stopped the Master Plan proposal that JWP and Comfortable Tom Leppert attempting to cock block the Inland Port with. Did something happen after the bankruptcy? Did JWP have a larger hand in causing the bankruptcy than the general business climate? Has Richard Allen turned tail and run?

Even with solid Democratic majorities inthe county now, the Democratic campaigns ran at 50 percent ofthe Republicans in mail-in early votes -- a good indicator of organization and mobilization,especially inthe black vote, which is getitng seriously senior. And Mitchell didn't ask what to me was the main question: If the committee is only allowed to meet in order to hire/fire, then why keep bringing up the performance evaluation? No performance evaluation was allowed at that meeting, so.... It IS kind of scary that JWP (along with the DA) has basically said: "You know what? I don't care what you or anyone else thinks. I KNOW I can do what I want to do, and no one can do anything about it." Cuz it's true.
