Dallas PD On "Safety at North Park Mall"

Categories: City Hall

Two days ago we received an e-mail from a "william@bubblelifemedia.com" that insisted, "The gang activity at NorthPark sounds like an escalating problem thats not under control yet and could get worse." The missive also contained a link to this page at something called Park Cities iPhone Reporter (I dunno -- a D offshoot, maybe?) that insisted DPD's stepped up its patrols at NorthPark Center and that it's "no longer a safe place to drop off the kids for a movie or shopping."

Apparently, we weren't the only ones to get the e-mail: During Mayor Tom's adios, Dallas Police Department spokesperson Janice Crowther sent out a missive in response to "multiple inquiries in the last twenty-four hours from the media" that insists "there is no discernible organized gang presence" at NorthPark. Crowther also writes: "Reported crime at the mall is actually down since the first of the year as compared to the same time last year." The entire calm-down-y'all follows.
Safety at North Park Mall

There have been multiple inquiries in the last twenty-four hours from the media regarding safety at North Park Mall. These inquiries were apparently spurred by an e-mail from a mall patron who noted an increase in young people at the mall and increased police presence as well as from an informal conversation about the situation with off-duty officers there. Please know the following:

North Park officials report an increase in the number of young people at the mall, particularly around the movie theaters. The report we have from patrol and gang unit officers is that there is no discernible organized gang presence there. The Dallas Police Department's gang unit did go to the mall during the week of the Super Bowl as a routine measure. They made one arrest. They then did a follow-up but found no compelling reason to continue monitoring the mall on a regular basis.

Reported crime at the mall is actually down since the first of the year as compared to the same time last year. There have been 14 reported Part 1 crimes (not counting shoplift cases) compared to 21 last year. And the overwhelming majority of the offenses both years involve thefts of or from vehicles in the parking lot. There have been two robberies and one aggravated assault reported in the mall so far this year. While those certainly are a concern, they closely parallel the number and kinds of crime seen in previous years and by no means suggest an up-tick in offenses at the mall.

In late January additional off-duty Dallas officers were hired by the mall in anticipation of an influx of visitors coming to Dallas for the Super Bowl. The mall decided to keep hiring additional officers, particularly on weekend evenings, as a precautionary measure.

It is always a best practice to be vigilant of your surroundings whether it is walking in your neighborhood or shopping at your favorite locations. North Park security and the Dallas Police Department will continue to work to keep the mall a secure and vibrant shopping area where the public can go with confidence of being safe.

Janice Crowther is the road rage cop. Does she still work for the Dallas Police ?

The author of the viral NorthPark "gangs" email posted originally on BubbleLife.com iPhone Reporter comments on to why she sent the email to friends in her community and to where she got her information.

I personally find it interesting that all the DFW area crime blogs and other media outlets have only gone as far as reposting the Dallas PD Press Release on the matter.

"...(thugs)could easily overpower a group of our kids-not to mention just being in the wrong place during a fight or robbery. Seriously, I was uncomfortable just walking around in front of the movie" -parkcitiesbubbleblog

"our kids" seriously? HP has a long way to go to join the 21st century. Maybe they are still in the 19th - early 19th.

Is this email coming from the same guy screaming about granny-raping thugs?

Blame it on the Red Line. Never should have put a DART station 2 blocks away. Now all them darkies can hop on at Westmoreland and work their evil magic in North Dallas.

My favorite part of the email was that Oak Cliff gangs were using the mall TGI Fridays as their base of operations.

And that "our kids" would be overwhelmed by thugs at the Apple store. And that there was a bus line basically set up as a direct conduit from Oak Cliff to Northpark, apparently for the specific purpose of easy access to "our kids" for those who don't belong at "our mall".

I agree with Ellum08 that the food court and theater have ruined Northpark by bringing in teens on general! That and the attack of the strollers at Chickfila on Wednesday "kids" day. Now THAT'S scary.

This is exactly what happened on lower Greenville. Reaction that's completely disproportionate to actual crime rates or danger levels, just because there's an increased percentage of "non-whites". But that doesn't happen in Dallas. Noooo. Good ol racist Dallas.

What?
What?

Jay...people are dying on lower greenville. How is that an over reaction? Don't compare loitering to violent crime.

Banning teenagers, eliminating the food court, and making it impossible to reach by public transportation are only the first steps. Next, force out any stores that sell tangible goods of any kind and you'll eliminate shoplifting. Then install TSA-style checkpoints at every mall entrance to scan for weapons, narcotics, and poverty. (If your Amex isn't at least Platinum, perhaps you'd be more comfortable at Target?) Finally, dynamite all roads within a one-mile radius of the mall. (Yes, including Central Expy.) If you can't arrive by helicopter or personal jet-pack, you're not the kind of "good people" they want at North Park.

"(the thugs) could easily overpower a group of our kids". All you need to know about Parkies, condensed into one sentence.

Sooo typical from a 'parkie'. Omg, there are groups of teenagers of minority descent at OUR mall- they must be gangsters!

What I despise about going to NorthPark now are the kids, of all ages and colors. Everywhere.

I miss my old NorthPark before that blasted food court and movie complex. If that makes me a racist or a snob, then so be it.

When is the next "Thug Day" at HPHS? That's when they dress up like 'ghetto black people' - Fiesta Day is when they dress up like Mexicans (with leaf blowers).

Yes, the former uses the latter to distract the rest of the population so that they can proceed in their joo activities.

"Reported crime at the mall is actually down since the first of the year as compared to the same time last year." ....So this is like what? Comparing January '09 to January '10? Would someone who is a "real" reporter please provide some "real" crime statistics for say, the past 2-3 years instead of forwarding press releases. I mean everyone knows all the gangs and prostitutes were in Arlington for the first part of this year for the Superbowl.

when did it become "their" mall...parkies are some entitled bastards, aren't they?

I have also noticed many more young black and latino people at that mall when I have been there. I didn't realize they were gang-members.

But a lot of those black guys are rather openly effete. The opposite of keepin' it on the DL.

The Parkies are probably more afraid of the gays than the gangs.

Is there a $1 bus line directly from Oak Lawn?

Working in that area it is easy to see just what easy pickings the North Park mall folks are .I think it is amazing more of them aren't Mugged or Worse.

Hmm well thanks for posting the story, seemed like something worth discussing out in the open to me. I'm still concerned for the mall considering its my mall of choice week after week. There is a follow up story on BubbleLife if your curious http://parkcities.bubblelife.c...

"I noticed a different crowd at NorthPark a few weeks ago, last night when walking in to see a movie the amount of Dallas Police officers was startling (along with the groups of thugs)..." = I saw black people.
