County Judge Clay Jenkins Still Under Fire for the Sherbet Spill That Will Not Go Away

The majority of Dallas County's courtrooms were closed today because of inclement weather, but the commissioners court pressed on and held its weekly meeting this morning. Freezing temperatures and icy roads kept us and others away, but a dozen or so supporters of ousted Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet were on hand, according to Cecile Newberry-Fernandez, along with at least 14 sheriff's deputies. Newberry is a Republican fund-raiser and consultant, member of the Dallas County Historical Association and former community outreach coordinator for Commissioner Maurine Dickey.

A handful of folks addressed the court about Sherbet, which you can see after the jump. Commissioner John Wiley Price, who Sherbet says pressured him to resign last week, spoke for a few minutes, but failed to answer a question from Dickey asking if Toni Pippens-Poole, Sherbet's interim replacement, was Price's "political protégé" and if he pressured Sherbet to rehire her in 1988.

The group of Sherbet advocates, consisting of Republicans, Democrats and Tea Partiers, whittled down to around eight when embattled County Judge Clay Jenkins agreed to address them at the end of the meeting while his colleagues met in executive session. After Jenkins issued "a long soliloquy" about his thought process regarding Friday's Election Commission meeting, Newberry says, she and others began questioning him, at which point he became "nervous and awkward."

Newberry tells us that Jenkins -- the subject of three damning stories in The Dallas Morning News today -- dodged most of the questions and said another appointment prevented him from addressing the crowd gathered in the commissioners court following Friday's vote to appoint Pippens-Poole as Sherbet's replacement. And when he was asked why Sherbet's personal belongings were delivered to his house yesterday and was told not to come back to work despite one month remaining until his retirement, Jenkins claimed he didn't know about it.

"He just looked embarrassed the whole time, like a kid taking his lumps," Newberry says.

Commmissioner Dickey is expected to place a vote on next week's agenda that would reappoint Sherbet, and Newberry says Jenkins agreed to meet with other concerned citizens that couldn't make it out today.

Jenkins has already proved he is no leader. What a joke...Dallas County is done for.

OK 2 things.

Price is the real worry here. Not a fan of the Jenkins but do not lose perspective.

Bruce is not a political animal and has stated he will not run for anything.

You can see on tape, John Price becomes angry at Maurine Dickeys question about Toni Poole. Price knows the answer is yes,he also knows Poole is the one who reported to him what Bruce would not allow done under his watch.Elba Garcia should be ashamed saying Mr. Sherbet wanted to go on about his business. Elba does not have a clue about what goes on at Dallas County and John Price the devil himself is Her and Jenkins Teacher.People are angry about how Bruce was treated. As Bruce said if they had told him they were unhappy he would have been happy to address their concerns,if they wanted him out he would have accommodated them.None of that was done. This man was told by Poole he was being fired, Price's assistant told Poole and Jenkins thinks he's County Judge.Did you see Price raise his voice at Jenkins as he tried to stop the exchange between he and Dickey? The answer to Dickeys question is Yes,I was there.

Sam, why hasn't Jenkins own voter fraud issue come back up? The last person that should be trusted with evaluating the perfomance of an election administrator is a person who has played fast and loose with voting rules and been in violation of them. The Observer uncovered all this back during the Democratic Primary, including the part where Jenkins wrote on his candidate DMN interview that he lived in Dallas since 2001. You only looked at voting records. But you need to check the Ellis County tax records - they clearly show that Jenkin's had a personal homestead in force in Waxahachie (Ellis County) uninterrupted from the 90's onward and including tax year 2006. Jenkins bought a house in Highland Park (Dallas County) in July 2006, and then proceeded to file a homestead here (this is a public document that you can check). Therefore by Jenkins voting in Ellis County in May 2007 he was not only committing election fraud, it may have been a homestead violation, too. You cannot claim two legal residences at once nor can you reap the tax benefits associated with same. As County Judge he gets to oversee Dallas County;s tax rate, along with Parkland's, keeping in mind these are both taxing jurisdictions. We should be equally concerned about his appointment of a tort lawyer to the Parkland Board, especially in light of all the recent DMN issues (not to mention this person gave more than $10,000 to his campaign). Jenkins should do full financial disclosure of his medical services company (whose business model is tied solely to medicaid reimbursements). We should be worried, very worried with someone such as this controlling and potentially profiting from our tax dollars and key public resources. The recent fiction that Jenkins has manufactured regarding Sherbet is only the tip of the iceberg. The ever vigilant Jim S. is right - follow the money here and look whose pockets will be lined along the way. Everything about this guy thus far stinks. Time for some serious County Judge disinfectant. Stat.

Apparently...no notice because the County wants everyone to take a vacation day rather than an ice day.....so many non essentials showed up for work today and risked the same fate as their boss. Again, bad call, worse execution.

Whoever is running Dallas County, why does article say "courtrooms closed to inclement weather". Dallas County never announced anything. For 2 days; nothing. No closure, no late opening, nothing. That means: Be at work on time.

Kudos to the Observer for keeping the heat turned up on this important issue--great coverage and videos!

I was there (Dallas County Election Commission) last Friday to protest Sherbet's firing/forced resignation--call it what you will.

The amazing thing that occurred there was that Dallas County voters--male, female, Republican, Democrat, Tea Party suporters, independents, black, white, working people, retired people--all came downtown late on a Friday afternoon to unite for a common cause.

The immediate "cause" for this gathering was to support Bruce Sherbet.

It appears to me, however, that the bigger issue was the demand for a return to openess, honesty, ethical behavior, and integrity in Dallas County government specifically and all government generally.

Our national, state, and local governments are as they are now because we voters allowed it to happen. We did not pay enough attention, didn't get involved, and perhaps didn't even vote. The real problem is voter apathy and I, too, have been guilty as charged.

As last Friday's gathering proved, people across-the-board still care about ethical behavior and honesty in government.

I encourage everyone of you who take time to comment here and elsewhere to spend an equal amount of time actively involved in the political process.

I will be at the Commissioners Court meeting next Tuesday. Will you?

What's the use of having power if you don't abuse it!

Neither Jenkins nor Price will budge on this - there's no reason for them to. Price is guaranteed a position for life, and Jenkins was able to just wander in off the street and win election because he was "selected" by Price and the other Democratic powers-that-be.

Although I've never been totally thrilled with many of the Republicans who have been elected, at least by having a mix between the two parties has held some of the craziness in check (well, other than our esteemed District Attorney and a couple of constables). But now that the Democrats are almost totally in charge, I think we will start seeing even more blatant misuse of power.

Jenkins really should be embarrassed, but so should the folks who voted him in. Why are we surprised?

There will be a meeting of the Dallas County Democratic Executive Committee on Tuesday, February 8. Let's see what is explained there.

Commissioner Jenkins is totally inept. How could he allow such a blatant injustice with political motivations drive his decision making. He should resign from his office this week. How he look at the Citizens of Dallas and pretend to stand on his campaign promises of open, transparent government. It is a travesty for the Citizens of Dallas County and the Commissioners Court. He and Price should go......

Perhaps the folks will show up until Jenkins falls on his sword....rehires Sherbet and then becomes his own man. Also, wonder what the agenda item last week was that dealt with 'subrogation-D'Metria Benson'...a district judge?

JWP is elected by his commissioner's district, only 25% of Dallas County. Jenkins holds a countywide seat, one JWP could never win, but now he doesn't have to try. As I've said elsewhere, Price is the same now as he was last year, the year before that, and the decade before that. All that has changed is, after more than a quarter of a century, JWP finally has control of County government through his own personal County Judge.

For the forseeable future, the only person who can change that is Jenkins himself. He won't, because he lied his way into the job, and owes JP too much political capital to step away from the deals he made to get the job.

DO NOT presume that Jenkins is a victim. He is complicit, and his actions, while guided and supported by JWP, are ones he -- Jenkins -- must be held accountable for.

WELL SAID! wish I could be there Tuesday but have a special need grandchild to care for. For thiose who can put your time into showing up, not just posting your protest here. I have trained under Bruce and worked as a clerk and election judge. Bruce always conducted himself professionally. And In training sessions he diplomatically skirted pushy party people on both sides. I know he will be missed. I am not sure he will want the job back even if offered, He has dealt with so much over the years that none of us are remotely aware of, or what the pressure is like behind the doors of any county elections dept.

In my experience the bulk of people who elect clowns like this have very little vested in the results of their vote.

Price did nor endorse Obama he was with Clinton,He does not like Joe Wells and Joe Wells was only County Elected Official other than Pct. Chairs I saw in protest Friday.I'm surprise Jenkins went from Highland Park to Parkland and just last week he and Price were putting 5 members of the Board off , and wanted Dr. Anderson to resign. Price has been on Court 26 years, why doesn't he retire?
