Thursday-Morning Rewind: Kunkle Talks Ticket

I caught the tail end of former Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle's chitchat with The Ticket's Hardline, which aired a little past the 6 p.m. hour yesterday. During it, Kunkle talked, of course, about his maybe-sorta-more-n-likely run for Dallas mayor, which he said he'll nail down publicly once the Super Bowl dust clears. But then talk turned to The Ticket -- and how, as evidenced by the comments left here and everywhere else yesterday, he's still defined by That Interview With Greggo -- and that's just fine by him. If nothing else, Kunkle -- who admits to having read that Ticket history-of in its entirety -- has the best campaign-ad-in-the-making amongst all would-be mayoral candidates. Or maybe I didn't understand the question.

Below, thanks to Michael Gruber, is Kunkle's Ticket confession -- and, oh, more on his burgeoning mayoral platform. ("Streets, sanitation, police, fire are very important in my world.") That seems important too.

Did anyone ask him if he'd like the gig?....

While the former chief seems like a very good guy, I am wary of putting a cop in the mayor's chair. It feels like the beginnings of a type of military junta.

I've known David since he was a rookie sergeant in Oak Cliff in 1975. In fact his was my first sergeant when I came out of the academy, Has always been a very personable - down to earth yet extremely intellegent and very aware of his surroundings and would make a GREAT Mayor. But I think he should skip the Mayor's race and run for the US Senate, even though WLB, commenting on David's leadership ability, once said (in 1976) that David "would'n make a pimple on a supervisor's ass." I wonder what WLB would say today?

Maybe I'm dense, but I've never understood why that famous Greggo interview with Kunkle is so funny or poignant or whatever it's supposed to be.

I really like this guy and hope they can get him prepared for everything before he announces his candidacy. He seemed kind of caught off guard when asked about what his platform is going to be and major issues. I think he can do it though and with the way he turned DPD around and his connections now, hey why not? But that's not the question.

Well, because when Greggo, who may or may not have been hopped up on goofballs at the time, turns into real-life redundant man of redundancy, it's pretty f-ing hilarious. Or so thinks 96% of the P1s who have heard it.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question?

Do you like your job?

Ya know -- today's Greggo's birthday. Yet he's given us quite the gift that keeps on giving.
