In the Last Two Days, the Dallasite and The Old Monk Were Robbed at Gunpoint

Danny Balis just called with the heads-up: In the last two days, two local bars have been robbed at gunpoint. Danny wondered if perhaps they were related.

According to Dallas Police reports, the first stick-em-up occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Dallasite on Bryan Street, across the street from Jimmy's Food Store. Says Senior Corporal Kevin Janse, a man took a seat at the bar, ordered two drinks and even chatted it up with the bartender and other patrons. But around 12:50 a.m., he got up to go to the bathroom. And when he returned, he "displayed the grip of a revolver," according to the police report, and "in a very calm voice...said, 'Make this easy for yourself.'" The bartender gave the man $450, and he left.

Danny says he was nearby, at the Bryan Street Tavern, when the hold-up took place down the street. He found out about it because the bartender at the Dallasite texted his counterpart at the Bryan Street Tavern and warned him: We just got robbed. At which point, BST's doors were locked. Just to be safe.

About 24 hours later, the Old Monk on Henderson was robbed -- this time by three armed men who came in the back door shortly after closing time early this morning. According to the report, someone had gone out the back to shake out a mat, at which point three men, one of whom was masked, barged their way into the Monk. According to police reports, one of the men told the Monk's employees: Lie down, don't look at us, open the safe, or we'll shoot you. The manager complied, and the three men got away with $6,000 from the safe, plus money, cell phones, car keys and other items employees had on them.

Janse says police do not believe the two robberies are related.

Could someone also post police report links for the muggings on mckinney ave in Oct-Nov?

Robbing the actual bars isn't a drastic step from robbing patrons leaving those bars. Just saying, the progression from one crime to the other is plausible, as is the timeline.

As someone who works in the industry, a friend, and coworker ...I don't see why we should think that at least some of these crimes are unrelated. The common thread is that none of the suspects have been caught. Maybe some of the crimes are being committed by the same people; evolving from muggings, to humperdinks, to the more organized robberies of this week.

What can we do (as an industry AND by law) to protect each other? Whatever anyone comes up with, you can pretty much count me in....this shit is not ok.

I'll bet $100 that (same people or not) they live in the neighborhood behind Old Monk, J Blacks, and Barcadia.

Maybe more customers should start packing heat and then we could just shoot the robbers when they show up!

Sucks though, I like the Monk, gonna have to start watching my back.....

Some not all of this is up to the people in the area to take care of them selves. If someone or something looks out of place or just doesn't seem right call 911 .

You know, putting a security camera in parking lots is pretty cheap these days. Could help catch idiots like this.

Actually putting security cameras inside establishments is pretty cheap as well. There are camera systems that don't even need a DVR anymore so if there robbers were looking for the system, it would already be too late.

BTW - Robert, thank you for reporting this. It's fucked up that most of us found out about the incidents via FaceBook and not the "news". Hopefully, these bastards will be caught soon.

It sucks that these lowlife thugs are preying on Geenville Avenue and Knox Henderson. There is no doubt that they have been casing these neighborhoods for some time. As a former resident of the "M streets", I am not shocked. Those neighborhoods needs MORE RESIDENTIAL STREET LIGHTS(Seriously), and a heightened sense of awareness. damn.

The City did a street light survey a few years ago and, in their professional opinion (cough cough), determined that additional street lights were NOT necessary. Sadly, I cannot find the survey results in my files.

You can petition for additional lights on your street. I seem to remember the petition circle included X amount of property owners within a circle around the proposed location of the pole.

Your best bet is to call your City Council rep's office and find out who the City Services Coordinator for your area is and start from scratch.

How the hell could anyone say those neighborhoods don't need more street lights?! There is a reason why the "M street intruder/rapist" is at large. The streets off of Greenville and Henderson are PITCH BLACK. And the alleys behind those neighborhoods? Criminals easily navigate in those alleys completely undetected.

I feel bad for the businesses over there. The fact that no one has been hurt is fantastic. However, these thugs are probably working in concert with each other. They WILL BE BACK. I think I'll stay in the Deep Ellum area where I feel safe. *sigh*

It hasn't been reported either that there's been a rash of liquor store break ins as well. PKs on Mockingbird and Cork n Bottle on mockingbird were hit this week. In the last few months both Goody Goodys on Greenville and the Sigels were hit too. And that's just from what I've heard on the street in the business.

It's three black men (saw the video at cork n bottle yesterday) who have a means of tearing a thrice dead bolted door open, then immediately cut the phone and alarms once inside. Then steal moet, greygoose, patron, ciroc, hennessy, hpnotiq, and cigarettes. Load them into a truck and are on their way.

Kinda surprised no mention in dmn at all.

Dear criminals. Please rob the big corporate stores, not the poor schmucks trying to make a living running a bar.

We have not been able to locate a police report on this. Does anyone have anymore information on this? Is there a despcription? That would REALLY HELP.

The links above are to the police reports available on the DPD public website. I am trying to get my hands on the more detailed reports DPD's PIO keeps.

Per DPD: Suspect in Dallasite robbery "is a mid-30s white male." At Monk, "3-4 black males, mid-20s." Janse says, "None have been caught."
