If Nothing Else, Dallas County's Treatment of Election Boss Bruce Sherbet Is Bringing Dems and GOP Together (For a Protest!)

Bruce Sherbet
A Friend of Unfair Park writes: He's heard whispers of a protest planned for 3:30 tomorrow at the Dallas County Administration Building, where the County Election Commission will meet for the first time in more than two decades. The reason, of course, is the departure of Dallas County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet, who resigned yesterday following Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins's decision to call the meeting without so much as giving Sherbet a heads-up. As we noted yesterday, word is Jenkins did so at the insistence of Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, who wants to replace Sherbet with Toni Pippins-Poole, the county's longtime assistant elections administrator.

Darlene Ewing, head of the Dallas County Democratic Party, tells Unfair Park this afternoon: Absolutely there's a protest planned. Matter of fact, she says, "It may be one of the first bipartisan events in Dallas County in a long time. The Republicans are staging a protest. The Tea Party is too, but they never miss an opportunity to protest. And I know some Democrats are protesting too. Should have an interesting crowd. Maybe we need to have someone cater it."

(I spoke with Sherbet a little while ago, not long after he turned in his formal letter of resignation, and he said he knew nothing at all about the planned protest.)

neermanmug.jpg
Jonathan Neerman
Right now, the meeting's still scheduled, according to Dallas County Clerk John Warren, who tells Unfair Park he will deliver to the commission e-mails he's received protesting the treatment of Sherbet. Ewing says she too has received a number of e-mails in which "people are lobbying for Bruce to change his mind. But I doubt he will. That's why the focus of tomorrow's meeting should be: What next?"

But Jonathan Neerman, head of the Dallas County Republican Party, is concerned Jenkins will cancel at the last minute. "Because who's gonna hold him accountable?" Neerman says.

Neerman and Ewing say they will demand the county start a national search for a new elections administrator. Says Ewing, "I have no problems with Toni, but I would at least like to see who else is out there. This is a plum job. We're one of the largest counties in the nation, after all."

To which Neerman adds: "Bruce has very big shoes to fill. We already had the best, but we deserve to have the second best, and that means a nationwide search. Unfortunately for Toni,  because of how this whole thing has fallen apart, there will be many election workers who will not give her the benefit of the doubt when there are allegations of voter fraud, voter misconduct or electioneering at the polls."

"Darlene Ewing, head of the Dallas County Democratic Party...The Tea Party is too, but they never miss an opportunity to protest"Look who's talking, Darlene - the only difference between the Crat's protests & the TparT is that the Crat's usually get Al Sharpton to show up!

You can tell people that have a party affiliation are afraid of the Tea Party. The reason is because they are not recieving anythin in return from either party. They are about holding peoples feet to the fire so to speak and people shring away from that type of accountability.

Why protest? Why not a recall petition - it is not used often enough and it is the law.

I am very disappointed in Clay Jenkins. Bruce Sherbet has been an excellent Dallas County Elections Administrator.

Clay has apparently become JWP's puppet not only in regards to Sherbet but also pertaining to Parkland Hospital. Parkland is one of the best hospitals in the country and Dallas is very fortunate to have Dr. Ron Anderson as the CEO of Parkland. If the Dallas Morning News had run a similar investigation of Baylor, Medical City, or Methodist Hospitals, I am sure that the results of errors would have been much higher.

I have been a patient at Baylor and at Parkland and everyone at Parkland provides excellent service.

I have just recently read that Ron Anderson and the entire board at Parkland is being ousted. More of John Wiley Price's work with Clay Jenkins leading the way. Whether it is Sherbert or Parkland's leadership, they should be judged on their performance, not on their ethnic background or political affliliation. I am a Democrat but the behavior of Jenkins and Price puts a black mark on Democratic leadership at the Dallas County Commissioners Court.

Shame on Jenkins and Price.

DMN now reporting that, "Dallas County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet said today that he would take back his resignation if county officials offered him a two-year contract."

Wow, Dallas politics are dirty, dirty, dirty. So, we're months away from the next mayoral elections, and there is no clear front runner like years past. There are all kinds of major issues that could torpedo the flow of money to business interests, like the Trinity.

Sherbert is exceptionally good at managing an honest an honest election. Maybe too good, wink wink nudge nudge.

The fix is in, I tell you.

What this situation says to me is that those who want Bruce out are those who need less-than-clean elections to advance their political careers. Do we get to find out a vote or official positions of the meeting participants?

J.W. Price? That jerk is still around huh? I guess I haven't been gone from Dallas long enough!

SO what's the DMN place in all this? Are they too scared to speak up? This story is practically hidden inside the paper this morning, and everything is "just the facts" type reporting.

Seems awfully low-key for what I think is a very major political story: fair and balanced public servant is run out of town in order to install political crony.

I had hoped Clay wouldn't have been so malleable. Barely been in office and he's already been corrupted.

One, I find it amazing that everyone related to the process (repbus, dems) are coming together to help out bruce, which speaker to his character. I'll be at that rally..

Dos, I find it ironic that JWP pulls this "move" now to get rid of Mr. Sherbet to put one of his "sisters in the community" in a place of power. It stinks of Mayor Daley/Chicago alderman-style politics, which he has rightfully so been called out for it. The "Black Hole" of common sense has been there for quite awhile, clay jenkins just added to the mass.

Lastly, does anyone find it ironic that JWP has waited this long to rule with an iron fist? I mean, all he has done for years is pretty much bitch and complain concerning how "white people" have kept him down or calling him out for being an idiot, we all remember his marches at parkland and assaulting Fred Watts from KXAS 5, who was my neighbor when I was a kid in Duncanville..If is wasn't for city politics, this guy would've been an hood enforcer or an OG pimp dealing in ho's and blow at this point in his life..

It looks like Clay Jenkins passed his first test - conforming to JWP's direction.Thought it interesting that Darlene Ewing's first thought was to "cater" the protest this afternoon.

As a Democratic chair precinct , I find and I'm sure many of the Democrats in my precinct agree that the way the purge of County Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet has been has been carried out abysmally. Besides the way it was handled, Mr Sherbetis an outstanding asset to the Dallas Co. and is beyond reproach, who runs an office where this quality is imperative.

I have a problem with Toni she is a Price rubber stamp also. She communicates with Price on everything that goes in that department.Daphene Fain and Toni talk all day.John Price will run the Election department if Toni is appointed, also I have been told Toni's husband and daughter has been on election payroll that should be easy to check from County Auditor that is a direct conflict of County policy.John Price has bitten off the wrong hand this time and Clay Jenkins has started his decline and beginning of his one term status.Bruce trusted Toni and she helped sell him down the drain with Kathy and Daphene Fain.People are missing Foster because he stood up to Price and this would never have happen under Foster he cared about people and did not Have evil in his heart.Dallas County is in Big trouble.

I will be there, and I think that the first order of business should be for the committee to vote their support for Bruce and ask him to rescind his resignation.

How can this meeting of public officials possibly be closed to the public? They can go into Executive Session to discuss personnel matters or litigation, but they'd have to open and close the meeting as a public meeting would they not?

And thanks Mr. Jenkins for confirming everyone's worst hand puppet fears about your election. Can we not get the grown-ups back in charge? I miss Margaret Keliher, and I'm a Dem.

Sounds like they dogged Sherbet til he resigned, "Mean Girls" style. My question is, what was his (Sherbet's) part? Seems too one-sided that they just called the meeting to get him to quit.

I vote for "Rob" Wilonsky to play Sherbet in the accompanying Lifetime biopic. Or vice versa. Whomever's comes first. Dead ringers.

bettyculbreath you're correct - aside from dapheny fain talking to toni for most of the day dapheny works on her side business all day on the dallas county computer that we as dallas tax payers provide! rarely will one ever go to her office and dapheny will be working on county business. she's usually on the phone with one of JWP's girlfriends or working on her side business on county computer/tax payers dollar$.

Betty, I agree with you and like the content of your posts. But please, please, please: use commas and put spaces between your sentences. I know this is minor, and probably I'll get slammed for being pedantic, but your writing is very difficult to read.

That is the best idea I have heard all day. Dallas County has a vacancy, Jenkins should lead the commision in rehiring Bruce to be the Elections Administrator. It may be the only way he gets out of this with any kind of above average reputation intact... (It would also be a good way to let everyone know he is not JWP's pet. Just make sure someone shows him how to say and spell Bruce Sherbet, not Bruce Sherbert...)

The meeting is closed because its only reason for existing is to deal with "personnel matters."

Bruce has worked at the County long enough to see how Price works. He told Bruce he wanted him out March 1 2011,Bruce ask to stay until after City election he was thinking about the job,Dallas County holds election for all cities in County Price reply, I want you out March1 ,no consideration for up coming election that the Cities pay Dallas County to hold.Bruce knows like he said if I stay he will have something else and it will go on until he's out.John Price does this all the time when he can't run your department. He did it to me for three years after Lee Jackson left I knew my cheese had moved,he did it to Bud Been,Carolyn Blackburn,Sylvia Reyes and a host of other.Tax payers don't know how this man abuse his office to harm people.

I saw the editorial, but I was thinking of the actual reporting in the news section. It seemed a bit lackluster, considering that this would appear to be a fairly major local political story.

I guess if there's not a Super Bowl angle, it's just not important...

As for "closed session meetings". They first have to start as an open session meeting with an agenda. Now the only item on the agenda can be a closed session item. After the agenda item is read, then they can do into close session. Afterwards, they are to return to open session to adjourn the meeting.

Everyone be there.

Miss Marks, you applaud Jenkins for engineering bipartisan unity and then turn right around in the same sentence to insult one of the groups uniting, the Tea Party. Pretty hypocritical, pretty divisive, and pretty inappropriate. Shame on you.
