Harlan Crow to "Stay Out" of Mayor's Race

Harlan Crow
Now that the city's worst-kept secret is out in the open as Far North Dallas council member Ron Natinsky expressed his desire to replace Mayor Tom Leppert, we probed millionaire businessman Harlan Crow to get a read on whom he sees as the favorite contender among wealthy, politically connected folks like himself.

"I personally am going to stay out of it," Crow told Unfair Park in an e-mail. And he has no clue who will be supported by the Dallas Citizens Council since he hasn't been a member for a couple years.

Crow, who spent more than $5 million in an unsuccessful attempt to halt construction of a publicly owned hotel and whose family has donated thousands of bucks to various politicos over the years, appears to have soured on local issues for the time being. The Republican's apparently focused instead on the 2012 presidential election. Among the various nameplates of visitors to his offices at old Parkland Hospital are President George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty -- a rumored GOP presidential candidate.

I would vote for Neal Sleeper, but he's too smart to put up with all the third-graders from South Dallas at the horseshow.

If the business community doesn't yet have a frontrunner, it's because they really don't expect the city to have any disposable income for the foreseeable future. It sounds nice that local millionaires will keep their noses out of the election but this is actually a really bad thing. Business leaders line up to get a swipe from the city credit card but they're smart enough to know that we're over the limit for a while. They know a bad investment when they see one and it seems like this cycle is headed that way.

What Merkin said. I'd add to his list:

And a school district that is a stain and a growth-killer for the whole city.

Unfortunately, since it is puppeted by the very rich people who contribute to the campaigns of school board trustees, who in turn funnel tax money back to the contributors, what's a politician to do?

DISD is killing this city. If you don't believe it, you don't have kids.

Having a bad day? I'm ecstatic with the schools in my area of Dallas. Two of them are schools that Harlan Crow's father attended.

Whomever is the next mayor is effed, they get a hotel no one wanted that wont make money, a levee problem worse than New Orleans (at least that what Shutze has me believing), and the city wont be able to afford any of it

Now, if only a few more wealthy folks decide to butt out of Dallas government...

Why? To pave the way or the likes of Dwaine Caraway?

Who the hell would want the job of Dallas mayor at this point? It's kind of akin to insisting on picking up the check for a fine meal that somebody else ordered but most at the table did not want...

No, it's a kin to being a Special Ed Kindergarten teacher.

FWIW some months ago I overheard Mrs. Crow tell some friends that for now they were only giving to orgs that helped kids and fed folks.
