Critical Condition: War Between Dallas News and Parkland Escalates Over "Ouster" Story

Dr. Lauren McDonald
A few weeks back we took a look at the back-and-forth between The Dallas Morning News and Parkland Memorial Hospital, which, in recent months, has been the subject of numerous investigative pieces detailing patients put at risk and "needlessly harmed," in the words of News Deputy Managing Editor Maud Beelman. But the battle between the two entities jumped to a whole new level yesterday: In the morning, the paper published a piece by Brooks Egerton that said as a result of the paper's investigative series, most of the Parkland board was "being ousted," and that Dr. Ron Anderson's "long tenure as chief executive is approaching an end."

At 3:46 p.m. yesterday, Dr. Lauren McDonald, chair of Parkland's board of managers, sent an e-blast to media and hospital supporters accusing the paper of Pulitzer-baiting. Wrote McDonald, the paper "didn't let truth get in the way of writing their stories, nor do we expect this attack to stop. We may see an increase in personal attacks against the people who remain at Parkland, and those who are loyal to it." Her letter follows in full.
A Message From Parkland's Chair of the Board of Managers

After 69 Public Information Act requests over the last nine months (including requests for the telephone numbers and home addresses of each of our employees, requests for the personnel files of at least eight employees and pictures of newborn babies), The Dallas Morning News on Jan. 29, created a story that gave the impression that the Board of Managers was being "ousted" and that Dr. Ron Anderson, Parkland's president and CEO, was leaving.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

As chair of the Parkland Board of Managers, I want to assure you that we stand together: board members, hospital leadership, physicians and the greatest health care employees in America. We provide critical health care services to the people of our community who need it most.

Yes, five members of the Board of Managers may be replaced in the coming weeks. Newly-elected Judge Clay Jenkins and Commissioner Dr. Elba Garcia have chosen to appoint Debbie Branson and Patricia Rodriguez Gorman, respectively, as their representatives to the Parkland board. That is their legal right and responsibility and is customary for new elected officials. Board member Alan Walne, appointed by Commissioner Mike Cantrell, has reached his term limit and may be replaced. In addition, the Commissioner's Court also names two members of the board collectively and they may chose to name members other than Dr. Chad Park and Louis Beecherl. This is a regular process and not, as The Dallas Morning News would have their readers believe, unusual and vindictive.

In fact, Dr. Anderson shared an e-mail with me that he received from Judge Jenkins who wrote, "You have my full support and I appreciate your service to our community and your nation. I want to work with you to build a world class, state-of-the-art new Parkland. As you know, this new hospital will be the largest in the free world, and the project wouldn't have been possible without the belief in Parkland's mission by the public. Their decision to fund this project two months after the fall of Lehman Bros., in some dark and unsteady times, was and endorsement of leadership and vision."

It is a disgrace for The Dallas Morning News to take my concern for Dr. Anderson and his family's health (which should be of no interest to The Dallas Morning News) and turn it into innuendo that Dr. Anderson has near-term plans to leave Parkland. I am aware of no such plans or intentions initiated by the Board of Managers or Dr. Anderson.

Finally, think about what has been accomplished: Parkland is one of this country's most financially sound public hospitals, we are funding the construction of the clinic building without relying on bonds and the University Healthcare Consortium has named Parkland one of its elite hospitals. The truth is, The Dallas Morning News had to wrap up its year-long attack on Parkland in order to meet its Feb. 1 deadline to submit their application for the Pulitzer Prize. They didn't let truth get in the way of writing their stories, nor do we expect this attack to stop. We may see an increase in personal attacks against the people who remain at Parkland, and those who are loyal to it. We have all chosen to serve Parkland and its patients because of our inherent beliefs and values.

Thank you for your continued support of Parkland as we serve the patients and community who depend on us.

Thank you for your support,
Lauren McDonald, MD

Now that the DMN has apparently found evidence that she has falsified her background and credentials, and failed to repay government medical school loans, can she be forced to resign?

kay2the2nd
kay2the2nd

she has also overstayed the legal limit in her position.

She will NOT be forced to resign or suffer any of the deserved consequences as long as she has JW Price and the US Dept of Justice protecting her.

Dear Dallas public,

A group of concerned physicians within UT Southwestern and I have discussed a case that we would like the DMN to investigate and would like, if permitted, to bring to the public’s attention. This is one of the most horrifying sentinel events ever recorded in the annals of Medicine from any hospital’s gross negligence and outrageous conduct, and it happened at Parkland and UTSW a few years ago.

Due to strict HIPAA regulations about patient confidentiality, however, we are not allowed to reveal any unique identifying information known as “protected health information” about this patient, so we will describe his case in vague terms so as not to violate the law. We have previously photocopied relevant parts of this patient’s medical charts and know who this person is; however, HIPAA prevents us from divulging the identity of this patient.

His charts are part of the evidence we have turned over to the proper authorities; however, his story is so horrifying that I believe the public has the right and should know about his tragedy. If the victim and his family are willing to come forward to tell his story, we would encourage them to do so, on the public's behalf.

Therefore, we ask this patient, his family, and his friends to come forward to the DMN on their own to tell his story. I first encountered him after his botched surgery when he was transferred to the floor at UTSW a few years ago from the Neurosurgery service after his botched operation. This patient was a victim of an unsupervised neurosurgery resident’s lack of experience who injured the patient’s brain stem. The patient suffered one of the most dreaded complications known in all of Medicine, Locked-in Syndrome, as a result.

Locked-in Syndrome is a medical condition that may be worse than death itself. In it, a patient is completely paralyzed without the ability to move or communicate, except for sometimes the ability to move his eyes. The patient is essentially awake, aware of his environment, yet completely unable to move a single muscle; therefore, he is imprisoned in his body for the rest of his life, unable to interact with his environment or people in his life. This most severe complication happened to this patient as a result of the systematic policy at Parkland and UTSW not to require their licensed and credentialed attending physicians to supervise their resident trainees in the OR.

If this patient’s family, friends, or neighbors have read this message, please pass it along to this patient and his power of attorney so they may contact the DMN at:

The Parkland Stooges

Obviously, Lauren McDonald has a selective memory about her interview with Brooks Egerton of the Dallas Morning News. (See http://www.dallasnews.com/news... She is either delusional, has dementia, or is just outright lying, but clearly she is not forthcoming, honest, or accurate in her own statements.

This is exactly what she stated to Mr. Egerton: “he [Anderson] is NO LONGER WANTING to do the full-time CEO job.” How else is this supposed to be interpreted? It most definitely seems like McDonald is portraying her partner-in-crime, Ron Anderson, as being on the way out by these statements. There is no question about what she was implying, and then to come back on the same day as this article to defiantly deny this in her own separate press release is absolutely insane, if not absurd. There’s no ambiguity here. McDonald was the original source who suggested that Anderson was to retire—plain and simple. Now she’s angry and defiant that the DMN is inaccurate and wrong in reporting her previous contradictory statements?

Completely, unbelievable! What an outrage! How can one person be so hypocritical?

Lauren McDonald has no credibility whatsoever, and it appears she is just another two-faced public official who only serves her own needs and not that of the public’s. She was the only one who in fact suggested to Mr. Egerton that Anderson is on the way out. She also describes Anderson as going through a “personal crisis.” Apparently he is suffering from diabetes, has a wife who is battling cancer, and also Anderson is alarmingly dozing off at Parkland Board meetings.

Here is the most damaging statement from McDonald’s own mouth, “There’s no movement on the Board’s part to say he’s [Anderson’s] got to go, but right now, IT’S A DAY-TO-DAY THING.” How else could this statement from McDonald’s own mouth be interpreted by Mr. Egerton, except to say that Anderson’s job is in profound jeopardy?

In addition, McDonald revealed that the Board decided to review Anderson’s performance now quarterly instead of annually, as they are concerned about Anderson’s job performance. It sounds like his position at Parkland is in profound jeopardy according to McDonald’s own statements. And then McDonald has the nerve to go on at lengths to say, ““We’re hoping to have almost an emeritus position” for him. “We’re hoping that HE [Anderson] WILL TRANSITION into more of a political role, a policy-making role.” Despite this unbelievably delusional fantasy, it still sounds like Parkland is moving Anderson out.

So, why the denials now? McDonald mentions in her separate press release that the Pulitzer Prize submission date is February 1. Who would even know that? Sounds like something thought up of in a PR “crisis management” strategy session.

Obviously, this was a set-up by Lauren McDonald herself to ambush the DMN in a vile attempt to try to discredit them. What she didn’t anticipate was that her own words would come back to condemn her. Her follow-up statements of defiance, arrogance, and denials undercut her own arguments. This sounds like the most hypocritical and contradictory statements from the Madam Chairman, who has yet to date, been at all honest, forthcoming, or transparent in any of her dealing with the public about any of Parkland’s problems. Nice try, but shame on you, Madam Chairman.

This obviously shows that you are unfit for public duty, and not to be trusted by the public. This latest move to remove 5 of 7 Board members in one fell swoop (although applauded) also can have some negative impact on the reforms at Parkland. As the only Board member who has been fighting with Lauren McDonald, outgoing Board member Chris Luna has stated: “Some of the reform efforts could be sidetracked or delayed. We might not have time for delay.”

What we need to do is keep Chris Luna on the Parkland Board, elevate him to Chairman, and remove the less-than-truthful and delusional Lauren McDonald from Parkland’s Board.

Keep up the good work DMN. We need a watchdog to keep a close eye on Parkland and their less-than-trustworthy leadership.

Dr. Evil
Dr. Evil

Lauren McDonald’s worst enemy is Lauren McDonald.

These are very good points made about inconsistencies and contradictions in Lauren McDonald’s statements. In rereading the DMN article again and looking over her previous statements, it seems that Lauren McDonald is in fact the very source that created all the outrage over the “ouster” article printed by the DMN on January 29, 2011 about Ron Anderson leaving Parkland and the County Commissioners’ overhaul of virtually the entire Parkland Board. (See http://www.dallasnews.com/news...

So, what is McDonald getting at about the outrage and inaccuracies about the DMN article in her latest press release? The DMN was very fair and accurate in their assessment about the embattled hospital in that article from what she directly stated to them in her own words.

Lauren only has herself to blame for the reasonable conclusions that the DMN reported. From every indication, the DMN was only reporting McDonald’s own assessment of the situation. She stated Ron Anderson’s job was in serious jeopardy, and she implied Ron Anderson was leaving soon. The DMN didn’t create a story; however, McDonald did unfairly malign the DMN with her own hypocrisy. The only disgrace I see is Lauren McDonald’s inability to get her own stories straight and tell the truth. This is not what transparency is all about, and this is not the first time we caught Parkland’s leadership in a lie.

In fact, I see McDonald’s statements from January 29, 2011 will create huge liabilities for Parkland in any future lawsuits against the embattled hospital. Clearly, lawyers will depose McDonald and impeach her about her truthfulness through this official public statement against what she told the DMN. She appears to be completely contradicting every statement she has made and will lose her credibility with any jury in the first 5 minutes on cross-examination. Doubt will be in any person’s mind who sees these contradictions.

I think the commenters are correct in stating that McDonald has put her entire credibility and reputation (and possibly her career) in serious harm’s way with these latest statements. Who will ever believe what she says now?

Instead of being so eager and rushed to ambush the DMN in what is clearly an elaborate trap, she should have gone through the long series of careful legal reviews and revisions with lawyers before putting out this erroneous statement impugning the reputation of the DMN. Now, she has put her own job in serious jeopardy with possible libel and dishonest statements that will come back to haunt her and Parkland.

THIS IS A DISGRACE.

A message to the “Nobodies” out there at Parkland:

Let me directly address the “Nobodies” out there who have nothing to bring forth to the table on this discussion—no cards to speak of to put down as evidence or even as arguments—except for distracting personal attacks and a lot of bluffs of being indignant , defiant, and arrogant against very knowledgeable insiders at Parkland and UT Southwestern who bring a mountain of evidence and arguments to the table for this discussion . The time has come to either put up or shut up, so answer my charges without all the bluster of these histerionics you are using to distract everyone’s attention.

Let’s take a look at the “disinformation” the Chairman of Parkland’s Board of Managers is trying to suppressed from being disclosed to the public in her new campaign to be more “honest and transparent.” First and foremost, the Madam Chairman has yet to address what virtually every patient who has ever gone to Parkland has known for decades: mostly unlicensed and uncredentialed resident trainees and medical students see patients, which is completely unsupervised by any of Parkland’s Medical Staff. Apparently, UT Southwestern Faculty Members, who mostly comprise of Parkland’s Medical Staff, are too busy seeing privately funded patients or doing lucrative pharmaceutical clinical trials at UT Southwestern facilities to be bothered to actually walk over to Parkland to do their jobs the Medical Staff there.

Thus, we have a situation where—if anything goes wrong in the care of patients at Parkland without a licensed and credentialed Medical Staff member seeing the patient—a “sentinel event” would have occurred, instead of a mere unforeseen complication that anyone would feel bad about but would not place any blame on anyone for. A hospital not having any credentialed doctor on board, overseeing the care of a patient, incurring a serious injury inside the hospital is in serious and deliberate act of gross negligence, which has drawn the attention of a lot of oversite agencies besides the Dallas Morning News.

Ther are no less than 6 concurrent investigations or probes (that we know of) that are simultaneously being conducted by 4 private and governmental oversite agencies to date. They are: 1) the US Department of Justice looking into (a) Medicare/Medicaid fraud at Parkland and UTSW and (b) a narcotics drug theft ring at Parkland that makes Parkland the single largest trafficker of street drugs on the streets of our fair city; 2) the US HHS Office of the Inspector General also looking into Medicare fraud at both Parkland and UTSW; 3) the US HHS CMS looking into violations of (a) Parkland not properly screening patients for medical emergent conditions and breaking the nation’s emergency medical treatment act (EMTALA) and (b) also not responding to patient complaints at all for decades as required by federal regulations; and 4) the Joint Commission (JHACO) investigating Parkland putting virtually every patient in jeopardy by not having a licensed and credentialed doctor overseeing the medical care of its patients.

In addition, UT Southwestern had a previous Qui Tam False Claims Act lawsuit filed by its Chief Compliance Officer charging UTSW of systematically filing false billing to the US government for work it didn’t do. It also lost a judgement this year for racial discrimination on another former Faculty Member under the federal title VII laws, who also alleged in his lawsuit that UTSW tried to strong arm him into “double dipping” federally protected programs. And finlally a Chairman of Surgical Division for Trauma, Burn, and Critical Care at UTSW filed a Whistleblower lawsuit against UTSW for retaliation after he resonsibly reported his concerns about a complete supervision of residents at Parkland and charges of Medicare fraud.

It sound to me like much more is going on here than just a vendetta by the local news media. Why shoot the messenger just because you don’t like the truth that is being properly reported by them? We can appreciate the concerns you have about these inconveniences that all of us have put up that are disrupting the the flow of money that Parkland is used to doing as its “normal” operating business; however, cash cows aside, there are much more thing important in life (such as life itself) that should take a higher precedence than your concerns about our efforts to ruin and disrupt “business as usual” at Parkland. Don’t you think?

Well, it’s now time to put up or shut up.

The yahoos yammering about the "Parkland PR team" appear to be part of a coordinated astroturfing outfit. They use the same rhetoric, repeated over and over again, to great effect. Looks to me like the Belo family wants to discredit taxpayer funded healthcare for the poor and is willing to use their newspaper and astroturf PR firms to shape this "controversy".

The bait and switch con game
The bait and switch con game

I, too, am not an employee of or have any connections with the Belo Corp. Like Parkland Stooges, my connections are to Parkland and UT Southwestern, so I know what I’m talking about. The reason we are coming forth is because the alarming number of avoidable serious injuries and deaths caused by Parkland’s completely reckless mission to maximize profits at their patients’ expense. This message by Lauren McDonald is a complete fantasy. To quote Parkland Board member, Chris Luna, “It’s completely unacceptable!”

If you want, Nobody (who I’m guessing her initials are really L.M. or R.A.), I can tell you face to face in Parkland’s Cafeteria (right near the Ron Anderson Conference Room) about the evidence we have been collecting and submitting to various agencies about all the serious problems inside “the World’s Greatest Hospital.” It should be too hard for you, since you work at Parkland too.

Seek help. Your petty grievances, as displayed by the paranoid and accusatory posts of you and your sock-puppet, are disruptive to the care at Parkland.

Thanks, Lauren--I mean Nobody. We'll keep your concerns in mind and pray for you. That "looney rage" of yours can't reflect well on Parkland. In the mean time, remember to attend the JHACO compliance retraining sessions that the Joint Commission is making mandatory for you to address their "petty" concerns about patient safety. It's important so you don't kill any more patients unnecessarily. It's being held in the Ron Anderson Conference Room next to the cafeteria. Remember Parkland doesn't get accredited unless the Joint Commission's statement of violations from their "petty" investigation get immediately addressed by Parkland. Cheers and remember to take good notes!

The Parkland Stooges

Is that so, Nobody?

I am not part of the Belo Corp, or have any connections with them. In fact, I am a Parkland employee and part of UTSW. I am also one of the many key inside informants there, testifying against both institutions in several investigations. I know about the PR "crisis management" team because I submitted a Texas Public Information Act (TPIA), and Parkland had to respond back from their Deputy General Counsel, Nneka Egbuniwe.

In that response, she states: “Parkland engaged a [1.] MEDIA CONSULTANT and [2.] CRISIS COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT FIRM to advise on [1.] public relations issues and [2.] develop and implement a MEDIA RELATIONS PROGRAM to address public image matters related to Parkland.” She goes on to say, “the following individuals who are all Parkland employees, Parkland CLIENT REPRESENTATIVES, or Parkland consultants are named:”

LAUREN MCDONALD, Chair of Board of Managers, Parkland [CLIENT]RON ANDERSON, President and CEO, Parkland [CLIENT]Candace White, Media Supervisor, ParklandJennifer Cutner, VP, Legislative Affairs & Public Relation [Lobbying], ParklandJody Springer, Sr. VP, Strategic Planning, ParklandApril Foran, Director, Corporate Communications, ParklandPaul Leslie, Interim General Counsel, ParklandKenya Woodruff, Deputy General Counsel, ParklandMelissa (Turner) Grych, Creative Services Mgr, ParklandJohn Jay Shannon, Exec VP & Chief Medical Officer, Parkland

Ruth Fitzgibbons, consultantMarshall Doke, outside legal counsel

The rest I cannot go into because it is now sealed evidence and exhibits to the Attorney General; however, I can attest that Parkland has been engaging in a public “dirty tricks” campaign—the likes we haven’t seen since Watergate—in using tax-payer monies for a public smear campaign, lobbying efforts to weaken the TPIA and changes laws against the public and to its own benefits, recruiting key opinion makers and strategists, PR “crisis management” personnel, and others for this smear campaign, and filing numerous law suits to suppress the disclosure of this public information. If you want more proof and confirmation of what I say, please see http://www.niemanwatchdog.org/....

To say the very least, Anderson, McDonald, Parkland, and UT Southwestern have yet to begin to be honest, forthcoming, or transparent to any degree about any matters concerning either tax-payer funded public institutions. In fact, they have been malignant, manipulative, and dishonest from day one. NO CREDIBILITY WHAT SO EVER.

Ask any Parkland patient if they remember ever seeing anyone other than an unlicensed and uncredentialed resident-trainee or physician-assistant—such as a licensed and credentialed physician from their Medical Staff—during their care at Parkland. The vast majority of them will say, “No!”

Dear Trisha [Watson is it?] of Parkland AKA “Nobody”,

Calling us “sock puppets”—how mature. I can’t tell you how devastated we are by your comments. Resorting to name-calling and personal attack—how typical.

As for making no sense, why don’t you address why Parkland and UT Southwestern currently have six simultaneous investigations by four different private and federal agencies (that we know of) by JHACO, CMS, HHS OIG, and the Dept. of Justice—besides just the DMN investigative reports.

Why are all Parkland employees also required to attend mandatory compliance retraining sessions to address the Joint Commission’s (JHACO) statement of issues on serious deficiencies in patient safety practices?

Ever hear of a fellow employee of yours named, Jessie Mae Ned? She was a victim operated on by only a resident-trainee at Parkland, against her will and without any licensed physician seeing her for 3-days post op. She lost her leg because of careless people like you at Parkland. Have you heard of other Parkland victims like Mike Herrera, Sara Limon, or Tom Powers who had similar horror stories from “sentinel events” that happened from Parkland’s reckless, incompetent, and negligent care? How about the other 730 patients Why aren’t licensed and credentialed attendings not directly supervising resident-trainees at Parkland, especially in the OR or the ER?

Why don’t you put all your cards on the table and actually back up some of your assertions with actual proof or arguments? Put up or shut up. Doesn’t that take make more “sense?” Maybe because you can’t, and you have no idea what you’re talking about. Instead, a bitter, hateful, dried up, shriveled-up empty soul (like yourself) can’t do much better than to defend the deluded fantasies that you only have left to cling on to. Denial, arrogance, and personal attacks—what a pathetic defense!

Denial is not just a river in Africa. It’s also the delusional fantasy you’re living in. The only persons who need to seek help are you, Lauren McDonald, and the rest of the Parkland cronies. Go back and slither under the rock you came from.

What are you bringing to the table? Care to reveal any of your cards? Or are you just going to invoke attorney-client privilege again?

We don't want to take too much of your time because we know you're going to busy addressing patient complaints within 9 days as mandated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations. We wouldn't want to lose Medicare/Medicaid accreditation, now. Would we?

The Parkland “Looney Tunes” continues unabated…TTTTThat’s not all folks!

Since when is replacing 5 of 7 Board Managers at Parkland in one fell swoop considered a "regular process?” I don’t know about you, but I don’t like what is considered “business as usual” at this public institution, especially if it’s coming out of my hard-earned tax dollars. This is nothing but “monkey business” as far as I’m concerned. 5 of 7 is a complete upheaval, but not complete enough to my satisfaction. Why not go for 7 for 7?

For that question, we go to John Wiley Price, the Commissioner who is standing by his embattled Board picks, Lauren McDonald and that other female drone Board Member, Cobie Russell. McDonald’s term limit is long overdue. John Wiley Price better get with the game because even if Lauren McDonald stays, she will be marginalized at the Board and removed from her Chairmanship. Her latest “looney rage” rantings show that she is completely unfit for the job and does not have the capacity to be responsible enough to oversee the management of “billions of dollars” of our hard-earned tax dollars when “thousands of lives” of our good citizens hang in the balance. Price should replace his embattled pick for the Board from 12 years ago, or he will be the next to be ousted at the next elections.

Lauren McDonald is obviously cut from the same nut tree as John Wiley Price. She is a chip off the old blockhead. Price’s “black holes” and “devil's food cake” not too surprisingly goes very well with the crazy, histrionic, and “looney” denials of McDonald stating that nothing is wrong with Parkland, the dozing Ron Anderson should be made an "emeritus" President when he retires so he can continue to pull the strings at Parkland, and that Parkland is the greatest hospital in the world—nothing so far but denials, misdirections, and deflections, but no sign of being honest, forthcoming, or transparent (all essential qualities of public officials running a public institution.) In fact, McDonald previously stated, “We might as well take the hit and do what’s appropriate for a public institution.” In other words, let’s only do the right thing if push come to shove. Since when are “governmental bodies,” such as Parkland, allowed to keep secrets from the public like this?

Listen to the voices within your own Board. “The more transparent we become, the better we become,” said Dalton Lott, who chairs the risk committee on Parkland’s Board. “It forces us to address our warts.” (Oh great! Now the patients of Parkland have to worry about catching warts at Parkland on top of the incompetent and gross negligent healthcare they are subject to receiving!)

This crazy and arrogant defiance spewing forth from the Madam Chairman continues unabated while victims of "sentinel events" keep coming forward, whistle blowers line up to sue the county, disgusted loyal employees are coming forth to tell stories of retaliation and unprofessional work conditions, patients' complaints go unheard for decades, the Joint Commission investigates serious issues of patient endangerment, CMS warns that anyone coming through Parkland's doors are at serious risk of life and limb, CMS cites Parkland for numerous federal violations, a federal probe is looking into Medicare fraud, and the County Commissioners and the Parkland Board of Managers are demanding major reforms and more transparency.

And why is McDonald being so defiant and arrogant? So that she can retain power and continue approving incentive bonuses to executives and herself for years to come from the money they save from exploiting unlicensed, uncredentialed, and unsupervised resident trainees to do all the work that only licensed and credentialed doctors can legally oversee.

How can you even consider Parkland a hospital? Don’t you need licensed and credentialed doctors to be running the place to be considered a hospital? Now, Anderson and McDonald want to expand this racketeering operation into a new $1.27 billion luxury “hospital” at our expense. Parkland is obviously a mental institution, where the inmates run the asylum, not the guards. We the taxpayers can’t afford this kind of incompetent and grossly negligent healthcare for our most vulnerable section of our population. McDonald and Anderson must go. If we need to, we can vote out John Wiley Price, Judge Clay Jenkins, and Maurine Dickey (former Chairman of the Board of Managers at Parkland) in the next elections to get this done.

And finally, I didn’t know that Lauren McDonald was such a journalism junkie. It seems a little outside her field of expertise. She knew exactly when the Pulitzer Prize submission deadline was when only insiders would know or even care about this trivial fact. Does anyone know that February 1 is the Pulitzer deadline, or does anyone even care? Apparently, Lauren McDonald and the PR “crisis management” team at Parkland do and plotted to use this all along. In fact, she uses that idiosyncratic detail to accuse the DMN of Pulitzer baiting in her attack which was up on Parkland servers minutes after the DMN “ouster” article. Very curious, indeed. It’s not like that could have been an idea bandied about in “crisis management” strategy session with the PR media relations team to ambush the DMN. Could it?

What are you talking about? Lauren McDonald crazy ranting, raving, and rambling emotional breakdown, insisting on the delusion that nothing is wrong at Parkland while JHACO, the HHS OIG, and victims of medical malpractice, pretty much makes her assertions DOA. She's now put herself and Ron Anderson on the chopping block for ouster and guaranteed the Pulitzer for the DMN. Big mistake for her to respond in such a crazy and deluded way.

Dr. Evil
Dr. Evil

This message of angry defiance has completely back-fired on the Chairman of the Board of Parkland. I have to agree that it makes her look like a lunatic who is completely out of touch with reality. She has no credibility with the public since she and Parkland have let the transparency ship sail long ago, away from Parkland' shores. McDonald and Anderson are clearly trying to manipulate the County Commissioners in some pathetic power play to desperately hold on to power at Parkland; however, this feeble game they are playing with the press makes Parkland look like the worst basket cases, even in a psych ward.

When you remain silent and less than honest this long (never being forthcoming with what has been going on in your hospital, with no transparency whatsoever) people are not going to trust you and take you for your word. You look like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You’ve come to the game a little too late and have nothing to show for yourselves now that it is all over. Your pathetic little stunt only shows how deeply the public can’t trust you.

Lauren and Ron, please go away. The Dallas citizens have grown absolutely tired of you. You and UT Southwestern have brought Parkland to the brink of complete collapse and ruination, and no one appreciates what you have done to turn Dallas’ only safety net hospital into such a pathetic and complete joke.

Pandora
Pandora

After the latest crazy and delusional ranting, raving, and rambling message from Parkland—this time from its Madam Chairman of the Board of Manager—I think it’s time for the County Commissioners to stop pulling the wool over our eyes and get down to the serious business of dismantling the existing leadership of Parkland, starting this time with removing Lauren McDonald and Ron Anderson. McDonald is clearly paranoid about the DMN prying into personnel “telephone numbers and home addresses of each our employees” and “pictures of newborn babies” when the scope of the Texas Public Information Act clearly does not invite that kind of invasion of privacy. This does not show the “spirit of transparency” as the Madam Chairman has promised, but only shows an unhealthy preoccupation of the Madam Chairman with paranoid delusions that somehow her “enemies are out to get her.”

As McDonald pointed out in her message, this latest shake-up in the Board is just “business as usual” or as she describes it as “a regular process.” All that this sham of a shake-up has accomplished is consolidating power for her and Parkland’s President and CEO, Ron Anderson, who were remain untouched by the Commissioners’ token actions to feign reforming the system. Either be serious this time about completely overhauling the embattled hospital or dismantle it all together. The public knows who is in charge of Parkland and also who is responsible for bringing the hospital to such shame and disgrace, and fingers clearly point to the “gruesome twosome” of McDonald and Anderson.

McDonald is also deluding herself into believing that all of Parkland stands behind her, “I want to assure you that WE STAND TOGETHER: board members, leadership, physicians, and the greatest health care employees in America.”

NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.

There are grumbling in all parts of Parkland from the current Board (lead by Chris Luna), other executives, the Medical Staff, residents, nurses, pharmacists, clerks, therapists, other employees, and patients about their dissatisfaction with the current leadership and serious concerns about the future of Parkland. McDonald and Anderson have put Parkland in serious financial and legal jeopardy with decades of mismanagement and financial improprieties. They seem to believe the fantasy that nothing is wrong and ignore the true reality that everything around them is crumbling and collapsing in on them—in fact it’s imploding.

How financially “sound” is Parkland when it is suddenly struggling to find donations for its $1.27 billion new hospital? I hear Parkland is now asking its employees and resident alumni for donations ever since corporate donations dried up after the series of shocking headline articles coming out of the DMN. (Bank of America no longer mentions its $1 million donation because of the bad publicity.)

It’s also a disgrace that the President & CEO chooses to doze off at Board meetings. Clearly he has no concerns over patient safety issues at Parkland. This is not good reason to recommend him for “emeritus” status, nor is the fact there is a JHACO investigation into patient endangerment, problems with fraudulent patient informed consent, lack of any supervision of resident-trainees, a federal probe into Medicare fraud,….

The good citizens of Dallas can no longer tolerate or afford to pay for a completely incompetent and grossly negligent healthcare system that puts all its patients at risk and the county in legal liabilities to victims of serious medical malpractice, “disgruntled” employees who are constantly subject to harassment and retaliation, the growing number of whistleblowers, oversight agency investigations, governmental citations, Department of Justice probes, and the continuing bad exposure by the national media. The County Commissioners—especially Judas’ priests, Clay Jenkins and John Wiley Price—and the Parkland Board must decide what to do with the “gruesome twosome” before any meaningful change can even happen at Parkland.

Dallas can no longer afford giving these two yearly incentive bonuses for the poor jobs they have done. They were not appointed with the sole purpose of running this county into the ground.

See one, Do one, Kill one.
See one, Do one, Kill one.

Defiant, arrogant, and angry to the end, and in being this stubborn way, THEY bring both hospitals closer and closer to the edge of a cliff, waiting to fall off. The voices of outrage from everywhere else continue to grow. First, many of their own concerned employees, then their own patients, then the newspapers, then regulatory oversite agencies, then governmental oversight agencies, then the County Commissioners, then their own Board of Managers.... Yet the voice of contempt and indignity still spews out of the leaderships of both Parkland and UTSW. And yet, both institutions inch closer and closer to the edge of complete destruction and ruination. Responsible? Mature? Rational? Reasonable? Not by a long shot.

The Parkland Stooges
The Parkland Stooges

It’s quite unusual for a public hospital to hire PR consultants, especially “crisis management” experts, plunge large amounts of tax-payer monies into lobbying efforts against laws that benefit the public such as the Texas Public Information Act, and file lawsuits against the Attorney General to suppress the public disclosure of information that the public has every right to know, especially under the Texas Public Information Act. All these acts that Parkland is doing are unethical, immoral, and possibly illegal. If Parkland and UTSW don’t want to play by the rules (in this case the law of the land), maybe public funds should be completely pulled from both institutions.

And frankly, I wouldn’t want to be treated at Parkland. I have too much self-respect for myself, and insist that my health is handled by responsible “professionals.” I insist that my doctors are competent, licensed by the Texas Medical Board, and credentialed by their hospitals to see patients by all by themselves. Seeing only unlicensed and uncredentialed residents-in-training without licenses or hospital credentials and who are not supervised by fully credentialed physicians just doesn’t cut it for me. Where are all the attending physicians at Parkland? They’re not seeing patients, they’re not supervising resident care at Parkland, and they don’t run the show there. In that place, the inmates run the prison, not the guards.

Besides, who needs the drama if something goes wrong (and they quite often do at Parkland.) There’s no recourse if a “sentinel event” happens from this kind of reckless medical malpractice and gross negligence. Just ask Jessie Mae Ned or Mike Herrera. Residents have no money or malpractice insurance at Parkland, there’s no attending physician to sue because they’re not there, and Parkland is protected by severe state tort-liability limitations. Parkland does not stand behind their work. I have no respect for “trusted” institutions that do not stand behind their work. You’d have to be crazy or desperate to go to that hospital. Anytime a “complication” occurs without a licensed attending physician on record, that is defined as a “sentinel event” and is no longer a mere complication. What it is is a train-wreck—one I would prefer to steer clear of.

See McDonald’s response above. It’s defiant in not accepting any responsibility. In fact, she’s painting a fantasy that nothing’s wrong inside that hospital. It’s completely reckless and delusional. There’s no hope that any of this will change at Parkland. They make huge profits in only exploiting cheap residents for their patients’ healthcare needs while cutting out any responsible licensed and credentialed physicians from the picture. The only hope now is to throw out all the current management and executives and start over from scratch. Parkland and UTSW are both complete train-wrecks, inside out.

Anyone have a problem with this two-faced politician, Judge Clay Jenkins? He states in public that he wants major reforms and more transparency at Parkland, then goes right behind our backs to tell Ron Anderson that he has Jenkins' full support, that he's building a world-class state of the art new Parkland, the largest in the free world, and that the project wouldn't have been possible without the belief in "Parkland's mission by the public." This guy is not only delusional like McDonald and Anderson, but he is pulling the wool over the taxpayers' eyes. We need to get rid of all these "loonies" because they are going to take Dallas County over the brink of bankruptcy.

On top of that, Jenkins complements Ron Anderson for having the "insight" of funding this project two months after the fall of Lehman Bros., in some dark and unsteady times, was an endorsement of leadership and vision. Is he out of his freaking mind?

Let's get rid of all these maniacs!

Lauren McDonald is out of her mind

Parkland has repeatedly failed to be forthcoming or honest about any of its affairs, yet we pay taxes to this shabby public institution. Lauren McDonald's latest spin is just down right disturbing, if not insane. In fact, it’s delusional to be point of being certifiable. How did a person who is suffering from so many delusions and is so out of touch with reality get to be appointed Chairman of such a large public hospital?

I think a commenter on the Dallas Observer’s article said it best, “Oh yeah! John Wiley Price appointed her to that position. It now all makes sense: black holes, devil's food cake, no problems at Parkland, Ron Anderson should be made an ‘emeritus’ President and CEO of Parkland, Parkland is the greatest hospital in the world—all from the minds of mental midgets. “

No wonder Lauren McDonald responded “officially” to the DMN article within minutes. There is no thought, rhyme, or reasoning from her response. She is now adamant and defiant that nothing is wrong at Parkland, it’s the greatest hospital in the world, and Ron Anderson (who apparently nods off at Board meetings because patient concerns are boring) should be given an “emeritus” position as Parkland so he can pull the strings of the hospital when and if the Board decides to replace him as President and CEO.

Now apparently, the Parkland PR crisis management team is in high gear trying to link McDonald’s crazy statements with McDonald’s crazy and paranoid assertions that the DMN needs this article to “get in consideration of a Pulitzer Prize” before the Feb 1 submission date. By her insane and not-too-well-thought-out statement, McDonald may have just guaranteed that for the DMN.

It's a strange reference for Judge Jenkins to reference funding the new Parkland hospital two months after the fall of Lehman Bros. Sounds like famous last words. Is this $1.27 billion investment in the new Parkland supposed to be the "Titanic" of public behemoth hospitals?

There are apparently some folks in this town who are not altogether happy with Dr. McDonald's performance. This seems like the typical Dallas tempest-in-a-teapot. Trying to care... not happening.

Pull the plug on Parkland
Pull the plug on Parkland

Interesting comment that McDonald makes about Parkland being "one of this country's most financially soung public hospitals." Those terms of financially sound and public hospitals are almost exclusively oxymorons. It brings up a great question: How is Parkland so profitable when every other public hospital in the nation is deep in debt and in the red? The charges have been levied before that Parkland makes its profits and finances its executive bonuses on unlicensed and uncredentialed residents treating patients with no supervision by any attendings with licenses or credentials. If this is true, Dr. McDonald needs to be forthcoming with the taxpayers about all of Parkland's operational and financial affairs, and not have a public emotional break-down covered by all the newspapers in town. It makes it appear that the County Commissioners missed one additional Board member to oust.

The bait and switch con game
The bait and switch con game

Parkland has repeatedly failed to be forthcoming, honest, or transparent about any of its affairs. Lauren McDonald's latest spin is quite disturbing. How did this delusional, lying, and grandiose mental patient get to be appointed Chairman of a large public hospital? Oh yeah! John Wiley Price appointed her. It now all makes sense: black holes, devil's food cake, no problems at Parkland, Ron Anderson should be made an "emeritus" President and CEO of Parkland, Parkland is the greatest hospital in the world. All from the mind of mental midgets.

See one, Do one, Kill one.
See one, Do one, Kill one.

Denial is not just a river in Africa.

This poor poor lady (Lauren McDonald) is having a complete mental and emotional break-down in public. She has completely deluded herself into believing that there are no problems at Parkland, that she is the “Chairman for Life” at Parkland, that Ron Anderson is such a great President & CEO that he deserves an “emeritus” presidency for life at Parkland, and that Parkland is the greatest hospital in the world.

Whatever she’s on, even if I take it a double shot whiskey and some crack, I would be as high as this woman.

Asinine. You are not a board-certified psychiatrist and are in no way qualified to diagnose anyone. If you were, you would have hopefully looked at yourself a long time ago, realized something was terribly wrong, and gotten help.

See one, Do one, Kill One.
See one, Do one, Kill One.

I don't need to diagnose her because I don't want the responsibility of treating that mess that the Madam Chairman has sitting on her shoulders. However, to state that nothing is wrong at Parkland, to go on and on that Parkland is the greatest hospital in the world, and to "lovingly" flatter Ron Anderson as if he were Moses leading the Jews out of Egypt is prima facia evidence of delusions of gradeur and major denial. There is not one other person (except Ron Anderson) who thinks this. They should both be committed. This letter written by Lauren McDonald is just more evidence that the executives and the leadership of Parkland is completely out of touch with reality.

Hoosier Daddy
Hoosier Daddy

I think what’s more disturbing is the defiance, arrogant, and delusional attitude of Madam Chairman, Lauren McDonald. She’s defiant about her power at Parkland, and defends Ron Anderson for doing no wrong. Apparently, she really believes nothing is wrong at Parkland, and that Parkland is the greatest hospital in the world. Unfortunately, there are many many patients at Parkland who can and will come forward and prove her otherwise.

This is a disaster for any campaign to bring transparency to Parkland. The worst thing possible is to shoot and miss. Is there anybody paying attention at the News? If this was a part of a deliberate disinformation campaign then the facts need to come out. If not then the DMN needs to review it's editorial control. It reminds me of the old Jim Mora clip when he was coaching where he is shoutin "Playoffs? Are you kodding me? Playoffs?"

In this case it should be "Pulitzer? Are you kidding me? Pulitzer?" A total cluster for the Morning News and we are the ones who will ultimately pay the price for it.

The Parkland Stooges
The Parkland Stooges

Parkland has still not reveal anything; therefore, the problem of transparency is in Parkland's court. It seems the only organization capable of making Parkland put any of their card on the table is the DMN. The cat's out of the bag. Parkland is seriously harming its patients for the sake of profits. Using unlicensed and uncredentialed residents exclusively without any licensed attending in the buiding is really newsworthy stuff.

Oh, personal attacks by Parkland. I can't tell you how devastated I am. If you're not victimizing patients, commiting medical malpractice, or defrauding your patients, insurance groups, and the government, then you will attack your critics because you have no defense. Let's see the list of growing enemies on Parkland's list: employees, patients, JHACO investigations teams, HHS OIG, US Attorneys Office, Texas Attorney General, Dallas County Commissioners Court, Parkland Board Members, the national news media,.... I could be from any one of these groups. It doesn't narrow down the list. Does it? All these groups apparently all chasing a FAIRY TALE? DMN Stooge, you must be either Ron Anderson or Lauren McDonald.

I smell a rat

Dear Dallas Observer:

Your article is a red herring—if not an ambush set up by Parkland officials to discredit the DMN. This is obviously a trap laid out to discredit the DMN by the PR “crisis management” team at Parkland. Parkland wanted you to report on the DMN the way you did because they set up this trap lying in wait. Lauren McDonald sent a message out to Parkland employees the same day the DMN wrote the story on Friday, January 28, 2011. She knew what you were going to say because she and Parkland planted that false story to the DMN and was lying in wait ready to attack. Look over the details carefully, and you’ll see what I mean.

There is definitely something rotten in the state of Denmark. You and Tim Rogers’ D-Magazine were set-up by Parkland’s crisis management team in a lame attempt to discredit the DMN credibility before the Pulitzer Prize committee by Parkland. McDonald explicitly mentions the Pulitzer Prize entry deadline in her arguments. How would she know about Pulitzer Prize deadlines anyway? Who would even know that unless it was brought up in a strategy meeting by Parkland’s PR guys and “crisis management” team. None of us are big enough journalist groupies to even care to know those kinds of details. We knew this kind of media smear campaign was coming because I am one of the key informants against Parkland and UTSW. In fact, I pretty much knew that D-Magazine and you (Robert Wilonsky) would be the designated media allies to come out with this article on Sunday. I was basically lying in wait to respond, much like Lauren McDonald was lying in wait for the DMN.

Let’s look at what doesn’t add up in this article:

1.McDonald stays in power with no loss of powers or duties by her supporter, John Wiley Price. In fact with Chris Luna (Parkland’s only critical voice on the Board) gone and others on the Board gone as well, she consolidates her power on the Board and is stronger than ever in ruling Parkland with an iron fist. She can now mold the new members to her liking because they are “green” and likely too impressionable. Read her message that was intercepted by our informants to the Parkland employees the same day Brooks Egerton wrote the DMN article. It takes days (if not weeks) to respond like that, going through editors and legal review; however, they anticipated the DMN article and knew what was in it the same day. It smells like a trap, and their mistake was being too eager to ambush the DMN. That’s because they baited and leaked the false story to the DMN through Commissioner Clay Jenkins (AKA Dallas’ Judas).2.Ron Anderson remains CEO for at least a year without a search for a new CEO. It’s difficult to find a CEO for a hospital and takes at least a year ahead to plan, with a national search, interviews, credentialing, etc. His ouster is only real if the decision to find a replacement is in place, which it’s not. There are no plans to find a replacement at this time. Although the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA) prevents disclosing details of the CEO candidates and their personal information, the TPIA allows disclosure whether a CEO is being sought. There have been no plans by Parkland announcing a national search for a replacement CEO and President. Therefore, for all intents and purposes, Anderson stays indefinitely as Parkland’s CEO and President. The only plans intimated by McDonald would be that Anderson is elevated as the “Emeritus” President & CEO of Parkland, who can pull the strings, alongside McDonald, of any puppet President & CEO they choose if they really meant to find a replacement.3.Judge Clay Jenkins has been playing the DMN as wolf in sheep’s clothing. He is a two-face politician who is more than willing to stab you in the back. Read McDonalds’ message to the Parkland employees. He is truly a “Judas” to the good people of Dallas who wrongly put him on the Commissioners Court.4.Somehow, the only critical voice on the Parkland Board was ousted—that being Chris Luna. How could that have happened? Now, there is no voice of dissention on the Parkland Board. No one to speak up for the people of Dallas or the victims of incompetence and negligence at Parkland. The wool has been pulled over everyone’s eyes. McDonald and Anderson are more powerful than ever now that all these Board members who have been speaking out are now gone. Even Dalton Lott who stated: “The more transparent we become, the better we become. It forces us to address our warts,” is abruptly forced out when he finally speaks out against the Madam Chairman.

This is nothing but garbage planted by Judas’ priests at Parkland. Someone has to come forward and get ahead of this story to tell the truth. I can tell you as one the key informants at Parkland and UTSW that Parkland has a PR public perception team and a PR “crisis management” team working full time. So this little PR stunt is Parkland’s latest “dirty trick” that they played. It is so desperate that it’s absurd, if not comical. I know this because Parkland was forced to reveal this to me in Texas Public Information Act request.

There is no doubt that Lauren McDonald’s letter is very very suspicious. It was sent out within minutes of the same day as the DMN article, “Most of Parkland hospital board being ousted; CEO Anderson’s tenure near end,” on Friday, January 28, 2010. We intercepted and read the Madam Chairman’s response on Friday night. And we were expecting rival newspapers (D-Magazine and the Dallas Observer) to publish McDonald’s response on Sunday, and to no surprise, it was Tim Rogers’ D-Magazine FrontBurner and Robert Wilonsky of the Dallas Observer, just as we predicted.

No one officially responds that quickly to a newspaper article unless they knew what was coming out in the article ahead of time; however, McDonald responded to the Parkland community the same day in lightning fast time. Parkland knew about the article because they set up a trap for the DMN with false information and leaks through one of their crony friends. By all appearances from McDonald’s letter, the Benedict Arnold is Dallas County Commissioner, Judge Clay Jenkins. Like I said he is not only a traitor to the people of Dallas, but also a very manipulative and duplicitous person who is not to be ever trusted again. What a surprise! A politician being so two-faced.

I propose the people of Dallas move to oust Dallas Commissioners Clay Jenkins, John Wiley Price, and Maurine Dickey (the “Dallas Three”), as well as Parkland President & CEO, Ron Anderson, and Parkland Madam Chairman, Lauren McDonald (Parkland’s “gruesome twosome”.) We will never get any truth or transparency about our tax-funded public institutions from these questionable characters as long as they run the show. This is the “good ole boys’ club” ripping you, the tax-payer, off. These are the “Dallas three” who have been the staunchest supporters of Parkland and helping them deny that there were any problems at Parkland. The DMN has done a great service to the people of Dallas by exposing this corruption inside one of our most “trusted” public institutions. We also need to petition for Chris Luna to stay on the Parkland Board. He is the only true dissenting voice on the Board to fight Parkland’s “Gruesome Twosome” of Ron Anderson and Lauren McDonald.

I'm inclined to believe the newspaper wrote in good faith and was not Pulitzer-baiting.

A couple of weeks ago, another DMN reporter broke the news that an editor at D Mag called the DISD media guy when the editor's child didn't get into pre K. Soon after, the child was admitted. Imagine that. The editor later claimed there were spots open in pre K, but no one--especially the editor-- knew that on the day he contacted the media guy. Everyone in Dallas knows what was really going on.

Similar blame-the-reporter accusations were leveled at that DMN reporter for exposing the incident, but that's all she did: expose a timeline that negatively portrayed both DISD and the editor at D mag.

Attack-the-Exposer seems to be the play of the day for entities who don't appreciate the pesky, taxpaying public meddling in their affairs.

We pesky citizens now have blogs and other forms of instant information; we can now communicate and collaborate to make sure the institutions we fund serve us instead of the other way around.

Given the DMN's previous efforts to "shape" the news (holding the NTTA/Trinity Tollroad story until after the election, for one example), many people are rightly suspicious of an ulterior agenda when the DMN does go after a story.

Not that they do have an agenda here (I don't know), but it's sad that the paper has so frequently compromised its journalistic integrity.

This letter from Lauren McDonald is prime evidence that the DMN was right all along. She is completely delusional and whacked out of her skull. She is defiantly asserting that nothing is wrong at Parkland, it's the greatest hospital in the world, and that Ron Anderson is the greatest President & CEO of the hospital. In fact, she wants to elevate him to an "emeritus" position when he steps down, so he can pull the strings at Parkland until he dies. She and Anderson are completely out of touch with reality and shoulde be kicked out ASAP.

They don't have a choice. They are a tax-funded, public institution that is a division of the county government. They must reveal their complete affairs. That's how our government works. That's transparency. Not being forthcoming, being dishonest, and living in denial is just a slow, excruciating way to commit suicide for a public institution that relies on the public's trust. Once the cat is out of the bag, the leadership of Parkland had no choice but to get in front of the issues and address them headon in their most sincere and forthcoming manner. they completely missed the boat, and now they put not only their careers in complete jeopardy, but they have put the whole hospital and the county in complete jeopardy.

I have not decided on a side in this either (nor will I probably ever), but nowadays, I'm not sure if anybody working in a local institution of any influence on the public would want to talk to the DMN, lest of all be forthcoming about things to them. Suburbian Idiot sums up best why this is now.

The medical scandal and medical errors at Parkland occur more then at any other large public hospital. The board of managers are showing a blind eye to these medical negligences and refusing to address these issues head on. The supporters of Parkland hospital should be demanding that the board of managers clean this mess up. All members of the board of managers are responsible for condoning these negligence to continue. The supporters should also be demanding mass resignations.
