Bush Bash at Borders

• To the question about WMD/chem/bio: We allowed Germany to send these weapons to Iraq in the 80's. After Desert Storm inspectors combed Iraq and removed the capacity to make those weapons. Under the the 12 yrs of sanctions, Iraq was not allowed to bring in the raw materials/machinery needed to make more. The existing Chem/Bio weapons would have been inert. This was asserted by both Scott Ridder and the Weapons Inspectors, Hans Blix and company. As to Islam, I know of no Quranic quote that suggests what you do. I know the Book of Joshua celebrates genocide and seems to inspire many Israeli settlers today. But, lets look at Bush's policy. I honestly agree with the rhetoric of he and the neo-cons. The problem is their follow through and consistency. The Middle East indeed has a problem with tyrants. Sadly, most are our pets, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia are all US supported dictatorships. We supported elections in Palestine and then rejected their result. We bring democracy only as a pretext in search of more US puppets. What's so tragic is that we must wind down our manipulation of Middle East policies. We need to encourage a full, political process that serves the interests of the demos, not foreign power brokers, not pet tyrants. The chief reason is that this is a fracturing world, far from a world ruled by a lone superpower. Fiscal constraints alone beg we confront a lighter, more endurable foreign policy. In short, playing the good Boy Scout is in the best long term interest of the US. Only by appealing to the best angels of our democratic ideals can we hope to compete in a world where we will have to project more soft power. Soft power costs nothing and pays huge dividends. Hard power, alternatively bears a heavy opportunity cost. Our utter hypocrisy in our foreign policy makes it impossible to simply support "Bush." Do you support the "Bush" of rhetoric? or the "Bush" of impetuous action?

• Obama's Seat says: "I'd like to look up where waterboarding and that 'which some call torture' is unconstitutional, but I can't find it. Bush's team did what they felt they had to do to protect the nation, their number one priority." Waterboarding is torture. That's what Sen. John McCain (a man who himself was tortured) said. Of course, the focus on waterboarding is a dodge because that's only one of the torture techniques that were [are being?] used. It's not a question of torture being unconstitutional. It's against United States law. I've provided the citations. Your stance is that the law may be ignored. So, how many other laws are optional and who gets to decide? No, "protect[ing] the nation" is not the "number one priority" of anyone in the Executive Branch. They ALL take an oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution" which mandates that they obey the law. Fine, they felt the law was wrong in this instance. Then, go before the law in the form of a grand jury and let them decide. The idea that lawbreakers get to make the decision about whether they're prosecuted or not is a criminal's dream, but it's not the professed nature of this country. Finally, President Obama is completely wrong about his order to assassinate an American citizen who hasn't even been charged with a crime. However, alert citizens are aware that Mr. Obama has almost totally replicated (and in the assassination instance, exceeded) the abuses under Mr. Bush. As a side note, I stand in awe of someone being called a "left wing loon" when they stand up for what the law says. I guess all police officers must be "left wing loons" then.

• RW- Why thank you. I'll now admit you're my favourite writer at the Observer. And you're old, like me. One OT beef though, you guys have cut back on your print runs and/or distribution in Arlington, so it's hard to get a print copy.

• Alas, though, I fear I may never see my Unfair Park wishes come true, as you said, RW, you "do not love ALL Unfair Park-ers". I take that to mean me. My heart is still true to you, UP.

• I like the smaller items, because they make good conversation pieces. People aren't aware of what's going on around them (even in their neighborhoods), as much as they are that the Bush circus is coming to town. I'm a talker, though. I'll talk to pretty much anyone, and listen even better. I get the dirt, or at least, a good, unproven flight-of-fancy. I LOVE Unfair Park, because I would have never known about Dallas or become active in my city. I ask a lot of the questions theoretically, but y'all get the goods, from sources, and make it succinct-ish. Maybe, a little more entertaiment, and a little less red politics, though?? And more about Uptown. WAY MORE Uptown!!

• Robert - I would have gone too were I close, but I actually like Bush even though I disagreed with a lot of his policies, FWIW. Probably won't buy the book, but then again, I didn't buy any of Obama's Observation: As much as I'd like to debate Islam, this is not the venue, I am not going to dissect the Q'ran here. You make salient points about Muslims killing Muslims, they're practiced at it. That's one reason I was behind Bush at the outset. Back moderate/liberal Islam in the civil war. But, after years and years, and watching how "moderate Islam" is working in Europe, I'm reasonably confident that the west, even a staunchly liberal president, will hit them hard. As I said at the time of OIF: "Islam's last chance". Iraq is one place that might pull it off, the jury is still out. But I'm not terribly optimistic.

• Scott and Obama's: To be honest, I don't think items like these bring in a lot of pageviews. Seems to me it's but a few die-hards from the left and the right arguing with each other. Which is fine. I love all of the Friends of Unfair Park. Well, OK ... not all. Most, let's say. Truth is I only went this morning because it's not far from the house -- that is and has always been my neighborhood Borders, and it used to be so much better way back when -- and because it's hard to not want to take a peek at the circus. And what a scene it was, as evidenced by Danny's photos. We can't and won't pass up a local happening like that, from whichever side it comes. The items I like most are the ones like the Lower Greenville or West Dallas salvage yard posts from today -- real backyard stuff that will directly impact many Unfair Park readers, one way or another, sooner than later.

• Where is it? The Q'ran does contain passages on jihad (internal spiritual cleansing) and also the sin of murdering women and children. If you can provide specific passages that they use to justify their actions, please advise. But that is different than saying "it's there." Religions that use holy texts also require exegesis. And, which entity within that framework is in charge of the official exegesis is always subject to debate. It may be more accurate to say that many socio-political conditions have led to a culture of globally placed outliers who commit murder and claim a religious basis for their actions. The majority of terrorist acts are killing Muslims, including women and children. So, while we can say they're out to get the infidels, the statistics on deaths reveal a much more complex story. I believe, like you, that these are very serious matters. If we were willing to look at the more complex picture, we might see that it is not a good idea to continue to allow Saudi Arabia to pour money in to Pakistan for madrassahs, which are known incubators of radicalism. But that assumes we are willing to look at the longer view and accept something is happening culturally and politically that is perhaps outside our traditional frames of reference.

There's nothing less relevant to this discussion than anyone's preference for this or that outcome. Despite that, my oldest brother, Col. Marc B. Powe, USA (ret.) who did TWO more tours in Vietnam than President Bush was IN the Pentagon when American Flight 77 hit the building and he rejects the idea that we should let the terrorists when by throwing away our own Constitution. He took an oath to protect that document just like Mr. Bush did. • Torture isn't solely about the person(s) being tortured; it transforms the culture that condones it. What is wrong with the concept of capturing and legally prosecuting the perpetrators in a court of law? Well, for one thing, if we had captured the masterminds (those who executed the plans are obviously not around to go to trial), we couldn't have justified launching a pre-emptive war in Iraq. Does anybody really think a policy of extraordinary rendition--a program instigated by Bush and continued by Obama-- makes us safer? Egyptian prisons are where the masterminds fomented and forged their ideas. Extraordinary Rendition is tacit approval for other countries, mainly Egypt and Syria, to continue using torture techniques. So while Obama has reversed the water-boarding decision, it does not mean other countries we send people to will not be subject to this practice at the hands of others. So, still want to continue down this road of Middle-Eastern justice that partially produced al-Qaeda in the first place?

• Maybe those of you for whom hatred of Bush or conservatives is an over-riding concern should remember the old maxim about patriotism - your country gets the benefit of the doubt. Yes, it's hard to accept that Saddam lied, it's hard for many to recall the years the democrats warned of Saddam's "imminent threat", it boggles the mind that the UNSC agreed with Bush, that the majority of Congress agreed with Bush, and that many people still believe it was the right thing to do. Of all the people who should loathe Bush and flood comments section to let folks know they loathe Bush, or really, really loathe Bush, our veterans should lead the pack. For some reason, all the Iraq vets I know, including my son and his friends who were there actually like Bush, still. The people I know who lost loved ones there, they still respect Bush and his decision. Wanna know who they don't like? Harry Reid, who declared surrender while they were in the field. They don't like Kerry, who called them stupid, they don't like democrats who turned on them in a heartbeat, and they laugh at the people who spout boilerplate Code Pink/moveon bullshit, they simply do not care about the personal angst and animus. Now, if you want to make a straight-up argument that the Constitution should be amended to eliminate the part where it says that "all treaties made" are the "supreme law of the land" and that the president shall see that the laws are "faithfully executed" then make that argument. Meanwhile, IF President Bush had any real honor he would voluntarily submit his decisions to a federal grand jury. They might well decline to indict him. If they did, he might well be found not guilty at trial. Instead, he's making a buck off of his clear violations of the Constitution and black-letter law.

The Cremation of Care ceremony is performed there which ends with a mock human sacrifice under the guidance of dozens of men in robes and torches screaming while fire balls shoot into the sky.

Trust me, I know that pose, I've been around loser drug addicts long enough to know the tell tale signs of a user & or former user. That guy definitely has something to hide, just look at him.
