Let us pick our airlines based on security concerns if that's what pushes air over your foil. But, there is no reason the US gov't needs to subsidize this aspect of air travel.

• Chris: the TSA employees are forbidden by Federal law, one written especially for them, from unionizing. The general low competency of TSA gate agents is due to the fact that you can make more per hour working at the Chili's Too inside the terminal than you can groping strangers at the gate.

• ELRay: You overlooked a critical part of what prevents "El Al Airlines uses enhanced observation techniques and specially trained staff to successfully prevent terrorist attacks"; the all consuming fear of "profiling" and being sued because of it. The system was designed by lawyers not by law enforcement. I was at the airport earlier this week and watched TSA make a very elderly gentleman get out of his wheelchair to be patted down because he could not assume the correct position in the scanner. Granted the TSA agents were very apologetic, but give me a break.

• ElRay: I agree w/ ya buddy, the main problem with the TSA and DHS is the way they handle their employees. When the department was created in late 2001, they pretty much brought over the idiots that were hired at the previous "private security companies" pre 9/11. So, in essence, things haven't changed that much, except the retards were given federal authority to be stupid. The airport building managers would rather have the taxpayers pay to fix and replace sensitive sensor systems (that have the ability to save thousands of lives...) than fix there own dirty HVAC systems. • @El Ray: Unfortunately, the "sniffer machines" were phased out due to their inability to handle airborne particles that come from aging buildings (like paint, gyp board, and insulation). Maintenance of these devices became a loosing battle.

El Al Airlines uses enhanced observation techniques and specially trained staff to successfully prevent terrorist attacks without groping your wife and children. Most TSA staff never look someone in the eye and 'trust their gut' when it comes to screening - So far the most successful technique worldwide. Security screeners should also be allowed to use their best judgement, use profiling, and rely on instinct. Why are they groping old ladies and children? Why are they wasting the time and money of law-abiding citizens? Whatever happened to common sense?

• @MaxNoDifference - The strange thing is, plenty of other countries keep their planes as safe (if not safer) than our planes without laying their hands on people or seeing them naked. Instead, they train their security people to look for behaviors. Also, I know several people who have forgotten pocket knives (and more serious weaponry) were on them and made it to their destinations before finding out. To anyone with a little bit of training and/or imagination, the security at US airports is a joke. We have been blessed by the fact that the people who want to harm our air traffic have been incompetent.
