The News Yanks Its Endorsement of Broden. Didn't See That Coming. Oh, Wait. Yes, We Did.

The Dallas Morning News today withdrew its endorsement of Stephen Broden in the Texas 30th District congressional race, after Eddie Bernice Johnson's Republican challenger told WFAA-Channel 8 reporter Brad Watson that violent revolution is one of his "options" for changing the regime in Washington. "The Editorial Board has too many concerns about his judgment," says the do-over. "We plan to offer more details in the days ahead." Now, the paper recommends ... no one.

I love to say I told you so, and I did here the day The News first endorsed Broden. I had been working for some weeks on a Broden profile, and I was quite sure the Ladies Bountiful on The News's editorial board were unaware exactly whom and what they were endorsing. My story on Broden runs in next week's paper.

There is some small irony here for me. The more I got to know Broden, who attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor a few years after I did, the more I liked him. I especially liked the bit about violent revolution, since it mirrored sentiments I carried in my own heart during the first 25 years of what was supposed to have been my adulthood. I and my ilk from Ann Arbor eventually outgrew all that stuff, when we found out that during a revolution you have to live outdoors, you could get shot, and there is absolutely no good Provencal wine with meals.

But it tickles me now no end to see the Republican Party -- in Dallas, of all places -- coming around to the same positions we lefties held back during our hippie heyday. Goes around, comes around, I guess.

I suspect the violent overthrow remark just gave the News the excuse it needed to back out of a very naïve endorsement. Meanwhile, I'm still thinking about joining the Tea Party, as soon as I get a peak at the menu.

JimS, This is getting altogether too surreal for me. "Sure, lots of blood is shed in revolutions. But what value do you place on the freedom that revolution buys? " sounds like one of those college bull sessions that kept us awake Friday nights back in the late 1950s. I saw more than enough blood during my years as a reporter. To chatter about loss of freedom, and slavery here in 21st Century America where we have the vote and a say in our political affairs is obscene, and worse. If you hear the voice of God in the clamor for armed uprising, then attend to it. Politics is not my religion. In the meantime, I'm out of this. Schutze! Now, you're speakin' my language. When you say, "...they feared elites (aristocracy) far more than they feared the king...." That premise is what I contend is perverted among TEA Party folks. I contend that the aristocracy has turned the TEA Partiers into governmentaphobes. I can't understand how the common folk of the TEA Party truly believes that the aristocracy has the best interest of "we the people" in its intent?!?!
Steve Madison, the "new black panthers" are like three guys that appeared on yet another doctored video. No one gave illegals the right to vote. Incidentally, Republicans were in charge of all three branches of gov't as those policies were crafted and enforced. As to rights and liberties lost we've lost more ground to spying and surveillance. The hope that, he more let us believe than he promised that we'd soften our military exposure has been another betrayal. We are engaged in covert wars in Yemen and continuing cover actions against Iran, which only further undermines the "green" revolution. Economically, Obama has acquiesced to Wall Street, just as the GOP would. These are apparently non-negotiable issues. Ike warned us against them, Kennedy, arguably was shot for threatening our military, industrial complex. But, I haven't heard one tea party candidate question these either. I would like to posit this to JimS and Bill Marvel: If the ballot has truly replaced the bullet as a means of change in the US, then what is a freedom loving patriot to do when he sees 1) the Obama Justice Department refuse to prosecute mambers of the "New Black Panthers" for their clear violation of the federal law that is supposed to protect the voting rights of all Americans and 2) the clear intention of the Obama administration and the Democrat Party of giving the vote to around 20 million Mexican nationals (who are in this country in clear violation of US immigration law) who would (we assume) naturally align themsleves with the far left elements of the Democrat Party. I am curious to hear your take on what we ought to anticipate in America if this gambit is successful. Thanks!
Bill Marvel: I got too tired last night. I meant to offer one last point. Sure, lots of blood is shed in revolutions. But what value do you place on the freedom that revolution buys? How much more stunted would the life of all humanity be if all human beings were left to live as slaves? As for founders, ours were real blood and guts revolutionaries. They feared elites -- or aristocracy, as it was called back then -- far more than they feared the king. And they knew that the one thing that gets the attention of the elites and puts a little fear of God in them is the sound of the rabble coming down the cobblestones at them with firebrands, brickbats, pikes and nooses. If you remove that basic threat from the formula -- the threat that says we will take this thing down if you stack it too deep against us -- you virtually surrender freedom. By the way, I always thought Jefferson saw the role of the rabble in post-revolutionary society as carried out by the press -- a job I take gladly. The Morning News, where you were worked, on the other hand, fulfills the role of a social register.

The TPers weren't speaking out about anything until their 401ks got cut in half and they figured out they were going to have to reduce their standard of living or delay retirement. Then, it must be that African Socialist that caused that, right? Couldn't be the relaxed regulations on Wall Street that allowed golden parachutes and off-shore safety net accounts for the elite while bankrupting the middle class...must be that African Socialist.

Bill, Phelps will get to you as soon as he gets back from feeding his munchies at Denny's. He is referring to the legality of targeting US citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki, on the terrorist list and hiding out in Yemen. Sorry, Phelps, this is protecting life, liberty and property. 3 of the 9/11 attackers, the Christmas Day bomber and the Ft. Hood shooter all attended his sermons and had correspondence or met with al-Awlaki, and he is a known, powerful Al Qaeda recruiter committed to Western jihad. In this case, I support Obama--drone away. If it were college drop outs looking for pot in Costa Rica or discovering Cuba, well, that's another story.
If there ever were a time for Revolution, it would have been after the Bush/Gore Election. Luckily, sane statesmen calmed the disenfranchised for the good of the country. In hindsight, was it so good? Where would we be now if Gore had been President. No dollars or lives wasted in Iraq would make a huge difference in our deficit. On a quicker path to leading the world in alternative energy solutions would have helped our economy, environment and national security (instead of funding Rummy, Cheney and friend's defense company cohorts and Bush oil cronies).

So, the answer to suspected voter fraud is to not vote? Sounds a lot like "Johnny won't play fair so I'll take my toys and go home." There are laws against voter fraud, and some people in this area have been prosecuted.
Can you tell me just what constitutional liberties you've been denied since Obama became president? Let's start with the biggest: No person shall be... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; That one rolls right off the top of the head, since Obama has decided that he can summarily execute American citizens via unmanned drones. How about: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. We can start with the biggie of the Healthcare industry takeover, and follow it up with his refusal to abide by the decisions of the People of several states to decriminalize marijuana. Of course, none of Obama's supporters want t talk about his crunchy-con habits like war-hawking against American citizens and hardening the War on (Some) Drugs.
If we Tea Partiers had any confidence in a fair election, none of this would be even speculated on. The fact is that we don't have honest elections, and the shenanigans have already started well before election day. When a vote is cast opposite mine that is unlawful and fraudulent, then I have been disenfranchised. That's taxation without representation. Sound familiar? I'm praying that the election turns out to be beyond the margin of fraud, one way or the other. You all should feel the same way.

It does get a lot deeper than that, Jim. But a couple sentences on a blog is a sound bite, not a sound argument. The Constitution is our compact with each other as citizens to not "hind'r by any force" the workings of our elected government, but to correct it by the "Authority" of the ballot box. It's funny how easily the word "force" rolls off the tongue. How easy to sit around and fan the air with the word, as so many on this forum have done. Well, if the Tea Panthers have their way, we'll see soon enough what force entails. My guess is they won't. You and I went through all this before, back in the '60s when the clamor for revolution was coming from the other side of the political teeter-totter. Except for a few dead college students here and there, an armored car guard or two, and some cops, nothing much came from it. Talk's cheap, Jim. Even punditry is cheap in a society that guarantees freedom of press. The price goes up when it comes to armed insurrection. That's why Mr. Jefferson and his comrades left us a framework -- John Locke notwithstanding -- by which to avoid it. If you want a soundbite, here's one or two: Number of dead, American Civil War: 620,000. Number killed, Russian Revolution: 9 million (est.). French Recvolution, 50,000 (est.) Mexico (1910-1929), 1 million (est.) Spain, (a uprising from the political right, much like that being entertained by the Tea panthers), 2 million (est.)

JimS, Pundits seem to be able to forgive a lot if their subject is smart and interesting. Not saying you're agreeing, however, falls some distance short of actual disagreement. And then quoting Mr. Jefferson's little pro-revolutionary soundbites -- this before he got a look at what the French can do with a real revolution -- well, it does seem to leave you somewhere on the fence. Journalists kind of like revolutions, not because they yearn for real change but because all that shooting and excitement gives them something juicy to write about. Those of us who covered the crazy '60s had a ball, until somebody started blowing up university buildings and the weekend warriors started firing back. Yes, yes. Somebody needs to beat the Tea Panthers and Becks with a better -- God forbid, with their own -- game. But I don't think mentioning that they're smart and interesting or quoting from Mr. Jefferson is going to do it.

Anyone who wanted to spend a few minutes reading the various positions of Broden would discover that he is extremist in multiple ways (maafa 21 and the "black genocide" tinfoil hat group), is not an advocate of equality (only those who believe in his religion have rights), and his multitude of conspiracy theories (obama caused the great recession) only prove that Broden is unqualified at best, and dangerous to our liberties at worst. the world has too many religious theocrats screwing people, we sure don't need one here.
If Beck and his radio/tv ilk are acting purely out of love of country, then why aren't THEY themselves running for office? Why don't we have a Senator Limbaugh? Let me take a crazy wild guess: They're making more money than Caesar, staying in the "infotainment" business. The DMN is a "business." The incredibly sad thing about the TEA Party, as well as some liberal groups, is that people are being sold a bill of goods. The definition of "individual," (man, woman, child), which our Constitution protects, has been diluted and polluted with the definition of "business." The political machines on "both sides of the aisle" have non-humans (businesses) at the throttle, and controling the wheel. Until we truly have "individuals" (men, women, and the best interests of their children) at the helm of our democracy, our Constitution and our political affiliations - TEA Party or otherwise - are in vain. The fact is that the great insitutions of our society, meaning Western society but especially American society, have lost their legitimacy in the heart of the great mass of people on a scale with Europe between the great wars. People are skeptical of everything, and they are right to be so. The danger in times like these is that people look for certainty, which is different from truth. Everybody wants a new mom and dad to tell them what to do. Unfortinately, the guy working hardest to get that job is Glenn Beck. I have no illusions about what happens if he happens. A whole bunch of us get loaded on busses and shipped to upstate New York to hoe the rose gardens of the rich. It's a bad situation we're in right now, but there's not much point trying to make it go away by shrieking. Somebody needs to beat Beck with a better game. Look: that guy really is Hitler -- he's just the 21st century weepy smarmy American version of Hitler.
Visited Monticello and Montpelier last year. I was struck by the idea, that these Tea Partiers represented some of the thoughts of Jefferson's distrust of strong central government. Seems like its the tension that was played out between republicans and federalists. It is a mistake I think to point those positions out as wingnuts. In fact I think that hyperbole is misguided, because it shuts down debate and is dismissive. That said, i think the tea partiers are dead wrong and that what Broden is saying is directly contrary to our Constitution. The Constitution did not leave open the idea of armed rebellion. to state that is 'on the table.' is quite dangerous and irresponsible. and Bill, despite his timidity, Jefferson adn all these men risked their necks with their opposition to the British, although I get your point. You Tea Panthers out there who just love to quote Thos. Jefferson on the necessity of spilling a little blood now and then as a means of teaching our elected government who's boss -- You really should look up Jefferson's record during our Revolutionary War. One can only hope that when The Call comes to march on Washington, all Tea Panthers will look upon and emulate his stout courage in the defense of Richmond.

I like Brodan, do not believe he has said anything inaccurate and for a first time candidate on a shoe string budget running against an *unbeatable* incumbent I think he's doing fine. If we can elect him, he'll be a great foil for Marxists House members like Maxine Waters and Sheila Jackson Lee. I think you are being intellectually dishonest Jim. The right has been dog-whistling this threat on our liberties and our eminent loss of our constitutional liberties long enough. "Pastor" Broden has said that he thinks evolution, affordable access to healthcare for all, equality under the law and employment for gays as fundamental threats to our ability to continue as a country. Do you honestly believe that things like that were what Thomas Jefferson was referring to? Jefferson who was a deist at very most, who even published a bible removing all references to Jesus as a Prophet or the son of God, and who is responsible for the phrase "separation of church and state". Do you honestly believe that he would not find "Pastor" Broden's beliefs dangerous to our country?

You mean the media outlet started by Glenn Beck who apparently had no problem with his comments on his show that gays should be fired from their jobs and that "Darwin-Atheists" were conspiring to destroy the country? So after he has had 48 hours to come up with a spin that he thinks is going to work and then on what is obviously going to be a friendly outlet, shocking. Broden's extremist, unpalatable views have been well known to some of us for a lone time. It's sad that this charade has gone on as long as it has when some of us that know how to use a Google Search have known the real "Pastor" Broden for awhile.

Nice Enrique, dismissing the 30th as 3rd World! Next a lecture about "Real America". I voted for EBJ, not because she is the strongest democrat but because she is a democrat. This Real American, living in the 3rd World 30th, remembers EBJ's vote against the Iraq War and if EBJ had prevailed, over 4,000 Americans would not be dead and literally hundreds of billions of dollars wasted. She is flawed and may be corrupt, but I know that if the next Republican President decides that the government in Iran or Yemen needs to experience the American Democracy Project at the point of a gun, she will stand firm and say "no". All other issues are a footnote.

I don't think Broden is a fool. I think he is a charismatic, dangerous wingnut who's views are pretty much untenable in today's society in any sort of position of political power. I think the people that supported him are fools for not digging just a tiny bit with even a google search to find out how far outside of the mainstream he is and how few people can support the positions that he holds.

Good day bill, Check the order between the Declaration and the Constitution... without the first your can't have the second. This Country was founded by a "few good men and women", starving and freezing in the winters of the north east. Washington refusing to steal supplies and food from fellow "future" American. How quickly "the weak of mind, heart, and faith" use words from a Constitution they are unwilling to defend.
I'm not saying I agree with Broden on anything -- only that he's a lot smarter and more interesting to talk to than most of my doctrinaire liberal friends. According to the Christian Broadcasting Network, he was praying in a restricted area and was cited for failing to obey a lawful order. They emerged Friday? I've known about it since September 14th when I emailed Jim Schutze on it and have repeatedly tried to get news outlets to report on it since then. When are details about him thinking that gays shouldn't have jobs going to "emerge"?

Wow, nice to know that the entire premise on which this country was founded isn't acceptable anymore in certain company. And it's more than a little funny to watch the people who spend the rest of their time pointing out how worthless the Dallas Morning News is suddenly hold it in such high regard. I'll be voting for Broden, pardon me if i'm not offended by the idea of standing up to a tyrannical government.

I felt awkward just watching it. She is a joke and really doesn't seem that bright. She is a crook that got caught and is not going to jail due to technicalities. She will win by default being the lesser of two evils, which is sad. This will be her last term.
It is not just about the whole violent overthrow of the government thing that is troubling, it is Broden's EXTREME views on women, gays, etc. Broden and his Taliban style of Republicanism is much better suited to a third world country where they appreciate his brand of extremism. As for EBJ, she has delivered for the 30th and for Dallas for 18 years, working day in and out across party lines weather in the minority of the majority. Like her or not, her calm, steady, rational voice, and her leadership on any number of issues is what has won her the respect of voters on both sides of the aisle!

@Gary It's nice to be vindicated, it's funny how quickly it turned out that I wasn't a overreacting, raving liberal loon when I said that Stephen Broden is a crazy extremist nutcase that I was accused of being. If only the DMN or any of his supporters had bothered to do just the tiny bit of research that I did to find out that that the guy is crazy, it really wasn't difficult.

Steve - A) If Bryan Fischer from the American Family Association says it, then, obviously, it's fact. B) Dangerous is dragging the country into two unwinable wars that has cost thousands of american lives and trillions of dollars...all b/c they wanted to hook halliburton and other corporations up. Then, dragging the economy into a complete cluster F leaving it to others to clean up the mess. They (obama, etc.) are not doing the greatest job of fixing things and they are driven too much by political motivations and not benefiting-america motivations. But, leaving out the word Creator, which I assume is an oversite, means nothing one way or the other as it relates to the issues america is facing...it's just stuff that evanglicals and conservatives use to fuel their fire.
So, does he keep his Sarah Palin endorsement? I'm guessing yes since the Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell did even though they are just as extreme wingnuts as Stephen Broden. After watching the news last night and hearing that the Dallas Morning News was withdrawing their endorsement I told my wife that if they had taken the time they would have seen this coming. Of course, the DMN of late is short on doing its job so its not surprising. Everything seems to be just pulled off the AP wire and printed.
