McCarthy Building Company has built plenty of projects around town in recent years -- everything from the Wyly Theatre to the W Hotel to the Dallas County Detention Center South Tower to the under-construction Dallas City Performance Hall. To that estimable list add another landmark project: the Woodall Rodgers Deck Park. Says tomorrow's Park and Rec Board agenda, McCarthy was the best of four bidders on the project, and it's getting $13,340,169 to constructify the "parkscape and landscape, restaurant and cafe, performance pavilion, promenade, plazas, connecting walkways, dog park, solar light poles" and so forth.

I did ask Joanna Singleton, Park spokesperson, about one thing on the agenda -- a nearly $1.6 million bump in appropriations that'll come out of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation's budget. "The Foundation chose to fund pavers, the Olive Street Plazas and solar light poles," she says via e-mail. "These items are included in the original park budget but they were bid as alternates pending the fund-raising campaign. As a result of the success of the fund-raising campaign the additional items were able to be funded with this first package of Park improvements."

Back in April, the foundation still needed $27 million to fund park amenities and operating costs, plus a contingency fund needed during the first three years of its existence. Singleton says that number's come down quite a bit since then: "We do still have $15 million to raise and some great naming opportunities" available. The launch last week of Friends of the Park drew close to 400 and "far surpassed expectations," she notes. "There's a lot of energy and excitement out there from all over the city and suburbs. We were thrilled."

But, sure, you wanna know when they start building the thing. Like, building building. Singleton offers this tease: "Expect to see fewer road closures b/c of the State Fair over the next month or so. We expect (no guarantees) that we should see the first beams crossing the freeway in late October. Stay tuned for more details on that."
