News & Notes: "Please Keep Oak Cliff Dry," A Blockbuster Battle and ... Moody Flashback!

• Keep Oak Cliff DRY. I was in South Dallas today and looked at what can happen to a neighborhood with alcohol sales. I DO NOT WANT THE SELL OF BEER AND WINE CLOSE TO MY HOME. That's one reason that I moved to Oak Cliff.

• So did the Ralphs go to work at Sears?

• I lived in Old East Dallas before I moved to Oak Cliff 10 years ago. In the old neighborhood, people were pushing grocery carts up and down my street all the time, going through my trash, and leaving 40 oz empties on my sidewalk at all hours of the day and night. Although I was only 4 blocks from the very prestigious Swiss Avenue strip of historical mansions, i was also very close to no less than 5 places to buy beer and wine and 2 liquor stores. In Oak Cliff, I don't have the constant foot traffic walking to the convenience store for beer, but I still get empty beer bottles in my side yard all of the time. Basically it comes down to the fact that if you want to drink, you need a car to get across the river. That is a form of economic discrimination. While I can completely see Barry's point of view, you have to admit it just isn't fair that some neighborhoods get the by-product of legal alcohol sales and other neighborhoods don't. It's all Dallas and all of Dallas should have the same laws regarding something of this nature, otherwise it becomes suspect as to why some areas get the 'luxury' of buying beer around the corner and other citizens of the same entity have to get in a car and drive across the river. It's just not a fair application. All of Irving is dry. If you want to drink at your home in Irving, you have to drive to a part of Dallas that is wet to buy it. Conveniently, that area of Dallas happens to be touching the City of Irving. In my opinion, either all of Dallas is dry, or none of it. Anything else is selective enforcement of State laws within the city limits and is inherently unfair to certain segments of the citizenry.

• Hobos Hobos and poor drunk drivers and hobos, Dry Areas - Hobo Free Zone The well off can always go to some "nice" restaurant and get loaded but the not so well off they can only afford the corner store.

• I have a lot of respect for Barry, but have to disagree with him on this one.

• Is this "Dry" Web site something that was ginned up (pun intended) by Caraway, Davis, et. al.? Will someone please pay their toll so that I can buy beer/wine when/where and how I want?

• can kiss my ass. They only speak for a certain few in Oak Cliff. They certainly do not speak for me.

• "We are not frightened old fogies ..." Yes, yes you are. As d_w notes above, what horrible things exactly do you think is going to happen here?

• Regarding "Please Keep Oak Cliff Dry": maybe its 6 members could elaborate on the unpleasant changes that OC would experience if it goes wet, like more grocery stores and restaurants like Bolsa and Eno's.
