• Hey Betty! The cop killer did get escorted to his burial plot because the motorcycle cops did go with the procession to where he was buried, approximately 13 miles. I am sorry that you dictionary has a different definition of escort. But 13 miles and terminating at the cemetery qualifies as an escort. If it was a few intersections or around a traffic accident or two, I might buy into the load of rubbish you are trying to peddle but 13 miles is an escort. Of last minute course this violated DPD policy after a motorcycle officer will killed escorting a politician on a campaign appearance. Speaking of respect, why do the chiefs not respect their own policies? I feel sorry for the chief losing his son. But this was not the first funeral procession in town and we do not hear of a dozen cops being pulled from duty to accompany every other funeral -- with tax payers picking up the bill. Of course the chief and his minions will escape all censure. This is Dallas where the police chief will at worst, have to burst into tears and run off to DeKalb, Georgia for their mistakes.

• Correction: Cop killer did not get police escort, traffic Officers called ,to directed traffic,in dangerous condition,when folk in North Dallas on Central would not obey private escort's direction. Police Officers, deserve respect in life and certainly in death,however there are circumstances that call for unusual measures at various times,bad decisions don't always mean bad intentions.We all agree ,people who kill Cops don't get special treatment,at the same time people, who did not kill Cop, should not be placed in harms way.We all need to pray and stop for a moment and focus on an unusual happening ,in our lifetime and the impact it's having on all of us.

• Good point David, no cops anymore is obviously the way to go, some hybrid between fear, the honor system, and mob justice is the obvious solution. Do you realize how many stories you would have to scroll through if the Dallas Observer made a post every time a cop did his or her job, to serve and protect, as is expected of them? I'd say hundreds a day probably. One bad cop invalidates law enforcement as much as one bad doctor invalidates the science of medicine.

• This is why no policeMan can expect citizens to submit to any and all requests. There are impersonators out there who are especially heinous people and sometimes you even GIVE them a badge and a gun. We CAN'T trust you. You as a cop and a person may be a nice guy or gal but the organization you represent only cares about shortening yellow lights and too often they cover and protect each other instead of the public. In this litigious country, I can't blame them. But someone out there has to swear to protect and serve AND unabashedly honest, right?
