Jupiter Lanes to Roll Its Last Ball Next Week

A Friend of Unfair Park just sent some terrible news: Jupiter Lanes, that beloved old alley off Jupiter and Garland and home to the tremendous Hangin' Tens Beach Bar, is closing on June 3. I've left a message for majority owner Chuck Lande, but an employee there confirms the 52-year-old bowling alley, which closed in 2006 and reopened Memorial Day weekend '07 following a million-dollar makeover, is bankrupt -- and, on top of that (literally), there's no cash for a much-needed roof repair.

I've spoken to a few folks this afternoon, and it does appear there is some interest from investors who'd like to buy in and tidy up the place, but they'll most likely wait till the bank takes ownership next week. In other words, if you're a fan of this Best of Dallas-winner, you'd best get your frames in while you still can.

This alley was so great before the remodel. Once the new staff came in, all the weekend specials like the 25 cent games on Sunday nights (which attracted huge crowds) were taken away. When I mentioned something about these promotions, the new manager scoffed and mentioned that they "would never do that." I miss the old Jupiter and I hope someone can turn it around, but not these butt holes.
Some time ago there was a place called Expressway Lanes on 75, by the old UA Cine. If there was a bowling alley within Dallas core I would be all over it!
@ The Dude - hopefully they will...and just as hopefully, not gouge away. I love $1 a game, $1 beer, $1 corn dogs at Jupiter on Mondays!! You'd see all the coolest peeps (Read: FOE Pool attendees) and have an inexpensive and fun time. Gonna miss the Old Girl, hope the new princess fills the gap.
The place is *always* full! It doesn't make a bit of sense that a business that is well-patronized and well-kept would go under. I suppose the bowlers will go to Showplace Lanes in Garland -- but what will happen to the very nice DDR Extreme game in the arcade?
Deep Ellum Bowl is supposed to open up in early october... Maybe they'll pick up the pace a little and get started knowing that there's no where else to bowl in Dallas!
Where is Buddy going to play with his balls if Jupiter is gone?

Always sad to see another bowling alley go "bowly" up - like a lot of older folks I spent many an hour of my youth bowling, grew up in the Baltimore area so of course that meant duckpins....sorry Dallas, another victim of the digital age, tossing a ball at a bunch of wooden sticks I guess does seem boring when compared to the recreational fare out there for kids now a days....I shall shed a tear for Jupiter !!
All the old great ones are disappearing. Include the Bronco and Circle Bowls. I am still old and great, but haven't disappeared..........yet.

This f'ing sucks. Had a great time bowling the afternoon away there just a couple of months ago. When bowling is left to the Main Events and 300 Dallas's of the world, I'm out.
