Mayor Pro Tem Caraway Got a Little, Um, Carried Away With Official Invitation

Dwaine Caraway has come seriously unglued in recent months, behaving less like a Dallas city council member and more and more like Huey Long. My God. I can't believe some of this stuff. More on this in my column in the paper next week.

But I can't wait that long to share with you this latest piece of Dwainery -- an invitation to a city event, obviously prepared by the city, that reads like an over-the-top electioneering push-card for Mayor Pro Temperor Dwaine. It's after the jump. Go. I'll wait.

I came across a copy of this thing while I was out and about. I sent it to the city and asked what the hell it was.

I sent my question to Caraway, City Attorney Tom Perkins and City Hall spokesperson Frank Librio. I said, "This card (see attachment) has the City of Dallas seal and the seal of the City Attorney's office on it. Is it a City of Dallas publication?"

Librio wrote back this morning.

"A staff member in the City Attorney's Office prepared the announcement regarding the opening of the City's third community court," says he via e-mail. "That person should not have included the background information contained in the card.

"The contents of the card were not reviewed or approved by City Attorney Office management or Mayor Pro Tem Caraway, and should not have been distributed in that form.

"The announcement cards and their mailing were not and will not be paid for with City funds."

Yeah. But they were gonna be.

Oh, and it was all a total surprise to Mayor Pro Tem Caraway? He insists on that title, by the way. It means Mayor Time Being.

Wiggy. Wild. This place feels more and more like Louisiana in the '30s. And you know what I feel sort of guilty about? I love it. I always wanted to live in a place worthy of Robert Penn Warren.

I know that we're all incredibly enlightened and post-racial here... ...but it's hard not to notice a chromatic pattern when it comes to incredibly shameless, egocentric, narcissistic, over-the-top, self-promotion. ...it's as if the "humble, team-player, pass the ball, play by the rules" ethic only applies to part of the population. Come out 'again?' When did I come out the first time?? I have been way to busy with more issues more important than posting long-running monologues on other websites. Heck, I can do that on my site anytime. That statement not withstanding, I can honestly tell you - but doubt you will believe me - I have met David Wilson and he is not my doppleganger. Just happens to agree with me most of the time and has way better sources at City Hall than I do. As for Dwaine Carraway, he really tries too hard to please everyone all the time. As for Michael Davis and his so-called truth-be-told column, oh puh-leeze. Can we guess how he's gonna vote when the new zoning proposal comes to the Plan Commission??
I think David Wilson is Avi Adelman. his words are like exactly the same. c'mon Avi, it's ok to come out again.
JWP and Caraway are Dallas's beast answers to on why to move to Fort Worth. With those two wielding power, it is a wonder that Dallas does not have a steady trail of folks leaving.
I'm sorry, Dwaine Caraway doesn't amount to a pimple on Huey Long's ass.

You know, you just can't make up stuff like this.
This is not the only example of Carraway trying to spread his wings (while his talons grab money left on the ground). His Plan Commission appointee, Michael Davis, posted a blog a few weeks ago regarding the impending imbroglio over Greenville Avenue and plans to rezone the crap out of the troublesome bars. His comments would be funny if they were not so self-serving and offensive to us folks living out here. The fact that he is a Plan Commissioner means he will be in the mix when this issue goes to the Plan Commission. Kiss that open-mind good bye, as long as the powers that be on the streets keep the money coming to his so-called mentor and mayor wannabe. Let's look at some of his comments from the blog. Even the club owners will tell you about the other bad actors, because they want them closed as well. Is the answer to shut down the whole strip and sanitize the nightlife scene in that part of town? No. I speak as someone that has attended clubs and parties on Lower and Lowest Greenville since I moved to Dallas eight years ago. I was first brought to the area by a peer from my old job. I would estimate that his yearly income was at least $250,000. Now you wouldn't think that someone like that would hang out in the "dangerous and wild" Lowest Greenville "gangbanger" club district, but it's true. I also don't remember him checking on his 401(k) one minute and tying on his bandanna the next. NEWSFLASH: the people that hang out on Lowest Greenville also had birthday dinners and functions at the beloved Terilli's, Mick's, and Blue Goose in Lower Greenville. Does some magical transformation from professional to "gangbanger" happen once we have dinner and drive below Belmont Avenue? I don't think so. [To think that the tattoed and wigger-wearing fat pigs and their fat girlfriends are professionals is ridiculous. And an insult to professionals who don't have names tatted on their body parts for others to see] [Comment - I seriously doubt the troublemakers would have a party at Terilli's or Blue Goose, let alone be allowed in the front door] It's just like when Good Records set up a free outdoor show last year and it was shut down due to various unknown forces. Is that the kind of image we want to project as a city? [Comment - What unknown force? Even the Observer had no trouble showing the permit was issued incorrectly and that the noise reached way out past the area it was meant for.] Why the column? Did Michael all of a sudden get all concerned for an area he USED to live in?? Nope. His boss told him, Hey, I want money from the property owners down there when I run for mayor, and you need to get it for me. Write something good that shows we will beat this zoning change with a stick but make sure you don't have anyone videotaping you collecting money. This postcard is just one example of how Carraway bends the rules to fit his own goals, while standing up to complain when others do the same thing. Now he's out on the Trinity doing Mark Cuban's bidding to get rid of the scrapyards, just because, while ignoring the odor coming out of the City's processing plant. Even Miss Medrano smells a rat, if you read Schutze's column correctly, and it's not at the processing center, it's sitting next to her on the council horseshoe.
Knots: Good point. I like Huey Long. It's sort of, people in Louisiana used to eat muskrat entrails, then after Huey Long they got cornmeal mush with that. Gotta be better.
Aw, Schutze, there you go, getting all book-y again. I love All the King's Men. And at least Huey Long got textbooks for poor kids in poor parishes and really built up LSU. Dwaine Caraway can't even get people to pull their pants up. Maybe if he took a page from Huey's book and gave poor people free belts?
