It's Official: MAPSCO Has New Owner, Needs Map to Find Fort Washington, PA

• I know Al, I was there to. To many ass kissers trying to such up with the new owner.. Very sad situation. The new owner didn't and doesn't care about anyone but himself our immediate family, botto line. So sad, his day of reckoning will come, some day, it always does. But I could care less as I have moved on as well. Working for back stabers is not a fun businesses to be in.

• What a big mistake Mapsco made!

• The paper map era is virtually doomed. Where there used to be dozens of companies making high quality maps several years ago now there are but a few. Consolidation is the name of the game now. Mapscos maps are mediocre at best. Those guys had no clue on how to digitize maps properly; the outsourced most of it to India to be done, and a half ass job was done (still better than they could do in house). Plus you didn't have one single M.B.A in a leadership position at that company. I know; I used to work for them. Unfortunately the cartographic executives, if you could call them executives, had no experience in the competitive business world hence the fast demise of Mapsco.

• That last emailer is pretty close, I actually worked for this Universal out fit up through 30 days ago, I was in a meeting back in January where this owner stated he was going to buy out all of the existing map companies, then wrap up all of the retailers that have little choice in another map company to use, and slowly move the discounts that are now offering a 50 to 60% off the retail discount to more like 25% off the retail down the road. They will also slowly replace the old map companies maps (mapsco) with their cheaper maps. Has anyone ever seen a Universal US atlas, the pages are blurry, and the map book is so thin it folds over.

• In my opinion using a GPS is for lazy people not interested in learning the lay out of a town. Using a map can help you plot out a day the night before you go do some route work. However, on a business note, this Karabots guy is a fool to put money into buying a paper map company, I personally think he will just replace those maps that are in stores with his silly puzzle maps.

• As a Mapsco P1, I say 'Stay Hard, Keep Jammin' and I'll See Ya'. Wink.

• Mapsco doesn't require electricity and allows you to see a much larger area than the 3 inches on an lcd. Besides, it's handy when someone pulls up next to you at the gas station to ask directions because their gps got them lost.

• Interesting to read - I worked for Universal Map at it's headquarters for nearly 10 years, leading up to the 2008 acquisition. Ne'er a dull day for those last couple of years leading up to then :)

• A few people still rent videos at Blockbuster too. Computer based maps and mobile GPS are doing to Mapsco what auto makers did to livery stables in the early 1900's. I can imagine a sillier idea than to invest in a company that mass manufactures hard copies of anything freely available on the internet. Well...maybe the Cue Cat...

• I saw one yesterday, in the front window of my plumber's van. I asked him about it. Says he doesn't leave the house without it.

• When I first moved to Dallas over a decade ago, I didn't leave my house without my Mapsco. Now with GPS, Iphones, etc. I don't remember the last time I saw a Mapsco.
