We Still Love You, Jane McGarry: KXAS Lands New Anchor Team for 10 O'Clock News

Jane McGarry and Mike Snyder are together at 5 and 6 p.m.; McGarry's out, though, at 10 p.m.
Jane McGarry, who's been at KXAS-Channel 5 since 1982 and was named our Best Local Anchor in '01 (really?), is out at 10 p.m. beginning tonight. Meredith Land will be named her permanent replacement. KXAS news director Susan Tully just sent The Official Word:
Jane McGarry will co-anchor NBC 5 News at 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, effective today coinciding with the first day of the XXI Winter Olympics broadcast on NBC. McGarry will continue to co-anchor NBC 5 News at 6 p.m. Mike Snyder will co-anchor both newscasts.

Meredith Land will join Brian Curtis to co-anchor NBC 5 News at 10 p.m., Monday-Friday. Curtis has been in the 10 p.m. anchor chair since July 2009, and Land has excelled in numerous anchor and reporter assignments since joining NBC 5 in 2003.

Jane McGarry reflects on her new responsibilities: "I have been very fortunate to have a dream job for almost 20 years. Now Meredith will have that opportunity and I hope she will enjoy it as much as I have! Moving to the 5 and 6 will allow me additional time to devote to a new project that I am very excited about, while continuing my relationship with NBC 5. I am very appreciative of that, and I wish Meredith and Brian all the best as the new 10 o'clock team."

Meredith Land says, "I have great respect for the work Jane has been doing with the 10 p.m. newscast and look forward to maintaining that level of excellence and dedication."

The local TV-news'ers to whom I spoke this morning -- and none are at KXAS, though they are familiar with the situation -- aren't stunned. They say the honchos at the local NBC affiliate has been waiting out McGarry's contract the same way they did Mike Snyder's when he was demoted in July. (It's been happening up and down the NBC owned-and-operateds across the country in recent months, as the network looks to lower salaries.)

Below, a few highlights of McGarry's estimable career at KXAS, including Snyder's debut with McGarry as anchor, her 1996 interview with John Wiley Price and that time she mistook a door closing for Big Weather. Alas, Jane, we'll always have our Carly box and our Snoopy Dog.

Seems all the GOOD (older) people at Channel 5 are being forced out.  Snyder, McGarry, next will be Finfrock?  I loved Rebecca Miller.  If so, I will no longer watch Channel 5.  They are going down the tubes.  The one at the TOP needs to GO.

What a blow!  I guess getting older is a bad thing after all.

I provmised when Susan Tully got rid of Rebecca Miller I would quit channel 5 news. Wow! She continues to make changes. When will it be Tully's turn? Hasn't she been there long enough for some young chick to do to her what she has done to the greats of Channel 5 news?

Why doesn't KXAS just get rid of Susan Tully; she's been there a little too long.

Really, it doesn't matter who is on the desk at NBC 5 as long as it is managed by the likes of Susan Tully. Ms. Tully is well-known for her lack of news insight and her "run the newsroom by the polls" attitude. (I'm sure she thinks Warren Harding made for a fine President.) Don't get me wrong, she's obviously a really good business woman or she wouldn't have this prime job. But, seriously, when is the last time we have seen a story of merit from NBC 5? When? They are NOT a news operation and it's not for lack of amazingly talented photographers, producers, and reporters. It's because they have an ethos at the top that they live and die by the numbers. Jane and Meredith are probably lovely people who once wanted to be journalists. Now they get to do stories on bikini waxing in a down economy. Right on -- polls show that's what the people want to hear -- Susan Tully is going to give it to them.

Am reminded when Lin bought Channel 5.

Their NYC consultant blew into town, threw a hissyfit, they had a weatherman who was OLD, who talked Texan, didn't really like the blue screen thing, watching himself on a monitor and waving his hands. First thing to do, fire Harold Taft, bring in somebody younger.

It took a while to explain, that old man invented tv weathercasting, he's about the only reason why anybody watches Channel 5 news.

So much for consultants.

So......couldn't she just have quietly taken a cut in salary if that's so important to the suits (which of course it is) and remained at 10:00? Or, is it REALLY about getting YOUNGER at that position?

Speaking of beauty, is it just me, or does it look like Jane's had a nose job since that 1992 love-fest with Mike Snyder? Not so much the actual on-air part as in the newscast intro?

I'm not being as catty as it seems here, I'm just wondering. She can have as many nose jobs and bikini waxes as she wants, far as I'm concerned. It truly must suck being in an industry where your looks are everything.

"Tough times can mean tough choices," said anchor Jane McGarry, who recently blogged on her station's Web site about the pros and cons of bikini waxing. "But North Texas women don't have to skimp on beauty."

Anyone who thinks Jane is an empty teleprompter reader should go find her interview with Ross Perot. He tried to do his simplistic dog and pony show with the "little lady" and she was having none of it.

Well, we've been down this turf before, with her former anchor a 1000 weather persons and then Mike Snyder, then more recently Brendan Higgins, now Jane. And again, it's the detached what, me worry? cool thing to pile on with the snark. But I once again feel more compassionate and I think for good reasons.

Because (duh) there is no reason to laugh when someone is being demoted unless they did some shocking trash deed. And although I have no dog in this hunt...and certainly not with Jane Mc, it's like I told Brenden Higgins: In the TV media biz you are loved, popular, loyal, a company favorite, etc., etc. And then one day it's all about being not quite as young or just a fickle decision by some god knows who to try 'something new'. And with no warning you're blind-sided. Knowing full well that assurances that it's all amicable are bullshit. In truth, it's the first absolute proof that they have moved on and you are yesterday's news. Literally. They want to move on and move you out.

As a DFW native, I feel badly for McGarry. She's been part of the landscape here a long time, is very connected to the area and many people think the world of her. She has been a company person, loyal and available, involved in the community.

If she had shown up drunk slurring Lady Gagas Bad Romance on-air, I could better understand but this is really all about corporate amnesia; the instant loss of memory of someones worth as it was seen only yesterday. And in this economic climate, and this media mindset, she has my sincere sympathy.

Does this mean her insightful blog will be demoted, too?

Someone tell JWP the difference between a "benefactor" and a "beneficiary"!

Jane can report on the latest diet fad, or give notice of the latest lost little Highland Park dog at 5 & 6 just as well as at 10.

The sad truth is it take no talent to read the news, so why not go with the hotter younger version of Jane.
