Clothes are one thing (economics) but hairstyles/cuts , that's just going too far. have we not moved on from judging people on their appearance, jeez, if that was the case a few so called'important people' wouldn't stand a chance. • What a joke. Suspending a 4 year old for hair that isn't long at all. Someone over there must be totally off their rocker, and it's not just his crazy mother with the raptor claw or whatever hanging from her ear. Haircuts for military or those who work in industry are fine and should be mandatory for safety and health reasons. For all the people saying this is fine and dandy; what century do you live in? • What ever happened to the constitutional right to "freedom of expression"? • Give someone an inch and they take a mile. Most cities will fine homeowners if they let their grass grow too long. It's a rule designed to keep a relative sense of order. You don't like it, you move to the country. I'm all for Freedoms, but the next issue a parent will have is "Why can't my boy where a skirt like the girls? It's not distracting..and he wants to wear one. I'm not going to force him to wear pants. He cries when we put pants on him." Give me a break. The kid is 4. 4 year olds don't make the rules. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this school probably had the haircut rule long before this little dude was even born and in all likelihood before his parents enrolled him in the school. What kind of a politically correct world has it come to where people are siding with a 4 year old. Obviously the kid has had his hair cut in the past..so he must be able to tolerate it somehow. Simple solution. A. Homeschool. B. Find a new school. Life is not that hard. All you people that think "we are drones" or we are "taking away his freedom". Get real. You have choices in life. This kid is obviously in the wrong school.

• Hair length is not really a cut & dry case. I mean there are some people whose religion dictates a male child's hair not be cut. In that case, to force him to do so, would be a violation of religious beliefs. If his hair was long enough to sit on, moussed, Shirley-Templed, colored purple, or mohawked I could see the distraction and perhaps the defiant message behind it but personally I think he's cute as a button. The name "Tater Tot" suits him well. I just don't believe that in this era of children making homemade bombs, opening fire on the school, selling drugs, doing crack, engaging in premarital sex, becoming unwed parents, and eventually dropping out of school, that the school should make such a big deal of this kid's hair length. And the parents should grow up and attempt to meet the school half-way by at least having his hair trimmed a little.

• I think this lady, first of all, needs to be introduced to a comb. But I'm so sick of public "officials" trying to instill conformity. • For all of you that are blaming the parents, you're wrong. The parents have very little to do with this. If a child has long hair, they should not be held accountable and especially taken out of the school. That is like telling a African American boy/girl that they can not have their hair braided. This is insane that a school would go as low as to telling a child how they can and cannot wear their hair. What happen to America being the land of the free? Sure, everyone has to follow rules and laws, but a rule about something as trivial as hair length is just not worth it. If the kid gets a low-paying job or drops out in the future, that's his choice. That's the thing about America. People have SO much freedom and control over their lives that they can't really blame anyone else. Yes, that's sad that kids who don't care enough to study and do well in school turn out that way, but that's the choice they made. If they argue that they didn't know better, well they actually teach you all this from elementary school. Actually, this is how China got to be the most productive country. They have a huge population, with most of them being factory workers. More people, more laborers. To the person who said that jobs like this are drying up, it's because America's not the top manufacturing country anymore. Have you noticed that most of the products they sell say "Made in China"? That's because they have that much people working there. America used to be at the top, but now- now we're gradually descending.

• Ah, the hair issue. My folks said my hair was too long in high school, and then one day, they changed the dress code, allowing for long hair on boys. And Beards, too, neatly trimmed. • Anyone here ever stop to think that this is the policy for the ENTIRE school district? As in pre-k through 12? Now, I don't know much about Mesquite, but I've been a tutor in other parts of Texas where the majority of a population is poor, and their reasoning for strict rules in dress and grooming was to prevent gang associations being displayed at school! Yes, the child is four, but district rules are universal. Start allowing administrators and teachers to use their judgement for everyone appealing who doesn't want to "stand in line" and you waist their time. So which is it parents? You want total freedom for your children to look as they wish...or do you want the schools to do all in their power to curb the power of local gangs in schools? It's not gonna be both ways.

• In this case i think this school needs a good board makeover.Hell i live in a shit hole state and you see kids with all kinds of hair in school.Why is this even a issue most school have come to realize that times have changed and have comformed their school regulations to this fact.Most private schools have even made changes to their dress code. • Whether or not the rule is out of date or not the point is its a rule. They knew, or at least should have known if they read the hand book, that the boy's hair didn't meet dress code. They are teaching their child that if you don't completely agree with or like a rule it is ok to disregard it. I agree with the school. I understand that the parents disagree, but instead of disregarding the rule they should start working towards getting it changed.

• I am very surprised - well not really - at some of the posts here. I grew up in a time (I am 40ish) where we respected the rules and our elders, we did what our parents asked us to do, education meant something, and standing out in the crowd meant you were on the track to being successful. • This is stupid. Kid is cute with his hair. What the heck does hair length have to do with education. Some kids do have a phobia about getting hair cut - I know of one. Why should you traumatize a young kid over such a silly reason. The boy I knew saw the other kids with shorter hair, eventually wanted his hair cut & it was. I even saw someone here remark about relating long hair/tatoos/jewelry about the parents. FYI I know of people with good jobs that do have tattoos, jewelry, etc. At least one of the bosses & some coworkers have tattoos. Some companies & some positions have restrictions but many are the more old fashioned companies whose rules were made 30-40-50 yrs ago... Regardless, restricting a 4 year old child's education due to hair length is quite stupid & they are now getting all the negative exposure the school deserves!

• It establishes control & a clear message as early as possible. Years later, when the school administration�s guidance councilors inform the majority of its students that they are only prepared for tech or trade school & not for college, it is because that administration has made the decision early who will succeed & who will not. There is hope but it lies outside the administration & public school. It takes devoted parents constantly challenging their children to excel & achieve more than what is expected by a system that is satisfied with average.

• Now, maybe I'm wrong, but when I first heard about this, I heard that the boy was refusing to cut his hair because he was going to wait until it was long enough to donate to locks of love. Now, that is probably not the case, but the principal is sound. What if a kid wanted to donate his hair to help someone less fortunate- but it wasn't long enough yet? I (a female) have gone through cycles where my hair gets long, then I cut it and donate it. I've ended up with really short hair- like a guys- but it was never a 'distraction'. Besides, if you want a distracting hairdo, you should look at bright yellow (like a highlighter yellow) hair- no matter how short it is, or 7/8 inch tall mohawks. No *those* are destracting. Or course, I live in Oregon, so it's not quite teh same climate as Texas....

• This is an issue with the parents. Schools have dress codes, if you don't like it put your kid in a different school!! How hard is that? No 4 yr old gives a crap about their hair! While the code is outdated to norms of today it is their dress code and they enforced the policy. At least one district in the US actually follows their own policies. The district I work for sets guidelines but never enforces them which makes for a crappy work environment when the students know you can't do anything because no one will back you on the policy. The education system is too afraid they will hurt someone's feelings now. Its crazy that the parents, who have an issue with cutting their son's hair, can't just follow the rules. As a parent you have to sign the district rules which say you have read and understand the rules now don't want to accept them. They should have known about the policy from day one of school.

• I have 5 children and my oldest now 19 had very long hair when he was in 1st grade (thankfully it was in NC where people are allowed to be who they are). Who gives them the right to tell us how to wear our hair...if it is clean and brushed then whether it be girl or boy it should be allowed. Girls are allowed to wear their hair short and nothing is said so why should a boy not be allowed to wear his hair long? I have two more boys one in middle school one still at home, but if they should happen to want long hair or start to grow hair on their face and any school tells them to remove it, the school board will get a fight in which they have never seen...This is STILL America the last time I checked and if I am remembering correctly that means we are FREE to choose for ourselves how to look!!!

• The rules of the school are clear regarding dress code and personal hygiene. If the school the child attends has rules the parents don't agree with, they are FREE to have their child attend another school that conforms more with their beliefs. While I do agree with his mom that length of hair couldn't be a distraction in the classroom (how ridiculous) I must say the bigger issue here is to teach our children to respect the rules. As a parent we are to let our children know what is expected of them. As a parent of a 6 year old, I am sure there are or at least I hope there are rules in their home that need to be obeyed. • My name is Alyssa Morton and I am a spokesperson for PASD (Parents Against Student Discrimination). My partners and I were appalled to hear that young Taylor was punished for his hairstyle. Britney Wong, one of my coworkers has been assigned to this case. Ms. Wong is currently working to free Taylor from this terrible burden. Young four year olds should not be fretting about hairstyles. In a way, this whole case is defeating the purpose of the dress code. I assure you that his hair will be a distraction now that all of the adults are making a big deal out of it. Show me some real truth that students are making a big deal out of his hair. The only reason for these rules is that the system doesn't want to bother using judgement. It's too much effort to actually find out if the hair is actually a real issue. For the school system, making black and white rules is just the easiest thing to do. God bless Taylor and his family. • Perhaps the parents should enroll him in another school where this is no dress code. Dress codes are implemented for a reason and the parents were made aware of them when they enrolled him. My son goes to a public school that has uniforms and dress/hair codes. It keeps the kids from trying to steal each others designer clothes and puts them all on a level playing field, so to speak. Again, if you don't like the rules, withdraw your son and send him somewhere there is no dress code.

• Although the school district does have a policy on hair length, i believe it to be outdated. Yes the parents could make the decision to cut his hair but how does long hair or short hair inhibit his learning? Short answer - it DOESN'T!!! Going to school when you are 4 with long hair has no correlation to being in the military or to getting an education except for a negative one. When I was in Senior High School I had long hair but no one called me a hippie for it. That is because most of us in school had longer hair. Even the teachers had longer hair (the ones that had any). My Chemistry teacher had a pony tail. Most of the guys at the VFW have longer hair including pony tails. If you want to pursue a military career that is great but do not force your military values on us civilians. I volunteered for the Marines during Viet-Nam and asked to go over there. I was not drafted. My Son (only child) and Daughter-in-law have served in the U.S. Army. He in the Rangers and she in Medical. I have longer hair now. The kid is 4 years old. He probably will not even remember this unless his parents remind him and drill it into him but that is not the point. Longer hair should not have ANY bearing on an education. • The real issue here in not about what a 4 year old wants, but that the SCHOOLS RULES state and even included pictures so there is no question about the proper hair style. And I am sure they were informed of this policy at the begining of the year. The second point is the dad does not want to MAKE his son get a hair cut and at 4 he should be able to sit and get his hair cut. They should not have to "hold him down and cut his hair by force". I have two boys one that goes to school with rules about hair styles the other doesn't. We follow the rules. I also make them do homework, chores, go to bed @ a regular bed time etc... For the parents to stand their ground and force the child to seperated from his classmates is a dang shame.
