What you'll find below are few minutes of what aired on Gordon McLendon's FM freak-out on August 22, 1970 -- some of the sounds and some of the smells, dig? The best part: the faaaaar-out-man ads for a Novas show at LouAnn's and a Sticks gig at the Studio Club ... and all the action you can handle at the Fair Park Midway! There's some deep-cuts James Gang and Jefferson Airplane mixed in there as well. So smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Speaking of "music to the core," what's the deal with KXT having all these dead air problems? A few seconds here and there is one thing, but several minutes at a time? Is John Cage in heavy rotation, or they bought their transmitter on eBay, or what?

My theory: The transmitter is attempting suicide. It can't take all that Matisyahu, Ingrid Michaelson, Jay Farrar-Ben Gibbard and Devendra Banhart -- especially when the station apparently only has the one song by each artist in its possession. Though we did theorize yesterday that, indeed, John Cage had been added to the rotation. A welcome respite from Matisyahu.

On a related note, I am co-hosting Jack E. Jett's Rational Radio punk show tomorrow from 1-3 p.m. No Matisyahu.

KXT (and NPR music in general) reminds me of Brian Eno's complaint about new age music: "there's no evil in it."

I still remember when KNUS stopped being an underground station - overnight - all the young dudes were pissed off big time, and there actually were stickers showing up on cars and book covers that said ANUS instead of KNUS. True story.

My only complain about KXT so far has been the fact they're relying too heavily on NPR/PRI feed programs, especially on weekends. If they would actually start bringing in local airstaff willing to play decent music(less starship, more wilco) or, dare I say, take a page from KNON and allow on air staff to put together their own weekly program showcasing a genre they enjoy, then I might just throw some shekels their way to keep them on the air...

Last night on 91.7 I heard some syndicated show playing and talking about prog music. They were actually discussing Yes, Rush, and Jethro Tull among other things. I enjoyed it mainly because of how much I knew it was going to annoy all you pinhead hipster "expert" music snobs that write for and inhabit the threads of this site.
