SMU Paper Pays Homage to Honest Joe's. I Have a Picture of the Store Across the Street.

• 5 months after Pearl Harbor. Probably a grim time. Bataan falls the next day. I would expect their inventory was already starting to dry up. I'll bet the oil cans, wheels and hubcaps are all going to a scrap drive.

• Robert, are there any other family names in your Dallas tree? I only ask because I have a (ca. 1936)cook book published by the Dallas Council of Jewish Women. Didn't see any Wilonski contributions, but maybe you had a Bubbie with a different surname?

• Let's put Herschel on a flatbed that's dressed to resemble a sedan chair and haul him around town with a loud speaker to convince people that Dallas HAS a history. God bless these guys. I'd kill to have been able to shoot the bull with them behind that counter while drinking a Dr. Brown's Black Cherry soda.

• Not trying to nitpick, but The Daily Mustang isn't the SMU newspaper, or a newspaper.

• The mere fact I can run, and have reason to run, a 67-year-old photo of my grandfather on a blog is reason enough to do Unfair Park every day. The fact you are all kind enough to mention how much you appreciate his small contribution to Dallas's history, well, that's even better. Thanks.

• Thanks so much for all the photos you run, perhaps we can educate all the newcomers to Dallas. We have a rich and proud history despite what some may say. My uncle and aunt had auto parts stores around Northeast Texas, so that brings back some memories. STP stickers were in high demand in the 1960s so I was very popular. I think you could play your grandfather Harry in a movie!

However, I'm cleaning out the pantry and wondering why the heck I needed to can 12 jars of peach preserves back in 2005. Don't even get me started on the 14 jars of mincemeat. D'oh! Besides, what exactly was in those jars behind Uncle Eli? I may can indiscriminately, but I have some standards of cleanliness and food safety.

• This is great stuff Robert. I recently came across my old man's flight log when he took lessons in a Piper cub at Love Field in the 30's. There ain't many of us old guard Dallasites around. Thanks for posting this.

• Look at the size of the Amalie Oil cans... ah, the good ole' days, when men were men and cars leaked/burned oil by the barrel. Damn, now I got the Amalie jingle doin' a perpetual loop in my brain. Not. Good.
