Politics aside, those of us who were fortunate to know Molly, even casually, were blessed with a true Texas character. I tend to think that, without Molly, there would have been no Governor Richards, and what a loss THAT would have been.

When we lost Molly, we lost one of our greatest Texas natural resources. Years from now, folks will still be reading Molly's words and marvelling at the audacity of that Texas woman.

I didn't exactly forget what a great writer she was, but stumbling upon it anew is always astonishing, like walking into a casino where they pump extra oxygen into the air and everything is lit up and animated ... you didn't feel lacking for anything -- five minutes previous, reality hadn't felt dull, but now you see just what you were missing. She's like a Lone Star Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe rolled into one. Carve her mug alongside Willie's in the Texas Mt. Rushmore.

I had Parker in my head as Shanda's last name, but I knew that wasn't it.

I met her only once, at a Texas Observer fundraiser. She walked through the entire crowd, thanking them for their support. My wife met her, at a book signing for, Molly Ivins Can't Say That." Our signed copy is next to Schutze's Accommodation. I'm proud to have both and do say, I loved reading both of them in the Dallas Times Herald.

I also believe once upon a time her column was in the DO.
