Kirk Cameron's Coming to Save Us

Speaking of Kirk Cameron ...

First Baptist Dallas has posted the Growing Pains star's request for you to show up downtown on October 25. And you're invited to bring a friend, co-worker or family member who's going to hell. Shouldn't be too hard, right? Maybe he'll even sign your copy of Like Father Like Son.

See Kirk Cameron at First Dallas, October 25 from First Dallas on Vimeo.

It makes me sad that many people now think it's cool and funny to poke fun at other people's faiths and religious beliefs. Is it just a way for the faithless to feel better about their empty lives? So what if Kirk Cameron is an outspoken Christian? Does that bother you, Mr. Wilonsky?

I'll care more about people who make fun of evangelicals when Kirk Cameron isn't in a video encouraging me to "bring a friend that you want to go to heaven". Do they think it's cool and funny to judge the lifestyle choices of others? At least the "faithless" aren't attempting to project moral superiority when they degrade someone else.

Um, he's not the one doing the judging here genius. And you'd think a Jew would be a little more aware of religious bigotry, but apparently not in this case since there's one or two of these posts, which are really nothing more than excuses for the commentors here to take cheap shots at Christains, a week on UnfairPark.

I'd go heckle this moron but I would really rather just sleep in.

Besides, First Baptist has already established themselves to be despicable with their "Gay is Not OK" billboards and sermons and ignorant enough with their "Sex is like an iPod" sermon covered here previously: http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2008/11/robert_jeffress_on_why_sex_is.php

Funny story, when I was at the protest I asked one of the parishioners that was trying to "save" me from the evils of homosexuality because the bible preaches against it if she was OK with owning slaves and killing disobedient children because the bible said those things were cool, she said she wasn't sure and walked off.

First Baptist and Robert Jeffress make me sick.

John M, First Baptist has been doing this stuff for generations, it's nothing new.

After boys were afraid to swim with Dr. Criswell in the YMCA pool, First Baptist bought the Y (a cool old skyscraper) and tore it down.

Then there are those diamond studs and stick pin he used to wear (as the black and hispanic folks were directed to 'their' church when they tried to go in the front doors).

When the schools were desegregated First Baptist opened an "academy".

Maybe the ultimate for Robert was when Criswell was quoted as saying "God doesn't hear the prayers of Jews".

For now and forever more, the US is going to be a predominantly Christian country. I don't think anyone - other than people trying to raise money via scare tactics - would argue otherwise. For Christians to keep harping about how they are picked on is so ridiculous it's beyond laughable.

Just try to let an Islamic kid give the invocation at a Friday night football game in the middle of Texas, and THEN you'll see somebody picked on for real.

I have to agree, for a group that spends so much time and money trying to trample on the freedoms of others their cries of persecution when people don't subscribe to their particular brand of religion or even just their single churches teachings is wearing very thin.

so let me get this straight....
Kirk Cameron et al is saying "if you're not believing as we believe, you will go to hell."
Anyone who comments on this blog saying that Kirk and his believers are pretty wacky - well, those folks all hate Christians.
I don't believe they hate Christians. I believe (if I may assume to speak for anyone) they are annoyed, perturbed and generally disgusted with a particular kind of Christian...
Those who take it upon themselves to presume they speak for God.
The Kirk Cameron brand of religion is the only viable way to worship the F. S. HG. I mean, come on! You start putting out videos and making statements like that, you're just begging for "bat shit crazy" comments from the folks who you're trying to "save".

Yeah, heard all that before. "Gee, no one here hates Christians, we just hate the ones that, you know, actually say their beliefs out loud where other people can hear. All you Christians who keep your mouth shut, well you're ok in our book." It's that same bullshit every week on these two minutes hate posts. The religious bigotry supported here also reflects on the candidates this alt weekly and it's blog supports, so maybe local politicians should think twice for associating themselves with the bigots here.

Anonymous, I don't think anyone is suggesting that you don't or shouldn't have the right to believe what you believe. But that same rights you have to say and believe it doesn't mean that we have to respect those beliefs anymore than than your right to have them.

When you start saying teach creationism in schools, or that it's OK to own illegal aliens as slaves (Hint: Your bible says it is A OK! Surprise!") or that gays should be treated as second class citizens, we as sane, decent people are allowed to call your beliefs hateful and/or stupid and you don't have any right to be protected from hearing it.

Your right to religion doesn't not give you the power to stand outside your church and throw molotov cocktails at "unbelievers" and then duck back in your church and claim persecution and demand protection from the angry mob yelling "Stop it you assholes!".

You know, the bible says many things are OK that we find morally reprehensible today. If your pastor gave a sermon about the biblical justifications of slavery and that he had just purchased a Mexican would you defend him when every one else said he is horrible and wrong? I hope not, it's the same idea with a lot of the other religious stuff, it's just your judgement is too clouded to realize it.

In the words of Mahatma Gandhi: "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

The Big Guy says:

Robert -

Saying a Jewish guy is "from Lithuania" is like saying someone's maid in Preston Hollow is from University Park because that's where she switches buses.

The Big Guy also has family who made a long, pogrom filled stopover in Lithuania before arriving here.

This fact was clearly pointed out by The Big Guy's Grandmother, who upon seeing how big the teenage The Big Guy had grown proclaimed:

"I can see you take after your Grandfather, may he (unintelligible Yiddish curse). I always told him there was a "litvak" in the woodpile" - a brilliant combining pejoratives for both Lithuanians and African-Americans.

A lovely woman, she was not....

That's a lot of bandwidth to say that you have a right to be a bigot, and i agree, you have that right. And i have the right to point out your bigotry. I'm not a Christian or a member of any other religious group. That the bigotry towards Christians has gotten so bad on this blog, even a non-religious person like me feels compelled to call you on it should be cause for those here to do a little introspection. But more likely you'll just double down on your bigotry. Like i said, local politicians should think twice before associating themselves with the bigots here, voters aren't going to look favorable on candidates who are endorsed by those here.

I'm a bit confused as to how Anonymous made the jump from commentors' statements that they weren't really fond of Mr. Cameron's and FBC's rather antagonistic approach to recruiting and something about politicians getting support from bigots on this and apparently multiple other "Christian-hating" blogs. Maybe some posts got deleted?

It has always been humorous to me how a certain group of "do it my way or die" Christians make no bones about how they not only want to live a certain way, they want to make it the ONLY way to live (via laws) and everyone else has to do what they say, yet when someone else speaks up and says "Hey, that's great, you go live that way, but personally I want to live my life according to my beliefs and maybe you should back off a bit", they get all upset that everyone is picking on them.

Maybe they need to get their own lives in order (the divorce rate among Evangelical Christians is higher than almost all other religious group) before they decide what is best for us.

I grew up Southern Baptist, but then I got tired of hating everyone.

The bible was used to justify slavery and segregation. The founder of First Baptist himself supported segregation. This was ignorant, dangerous and stupid.

Kirk Cameron is factually incorrect and wants tax payer funded schools to be forced to teach something as science that has absolutely no basis in science. That is ignorant, dangerous and stupid.

So, the first one doesn't get a free pass because the religious beliefs justified the abhorrent behavior but the second one needs to be defended from being called ignorant, dangerous and stupid for the sake of religious tolerance?

You're right! I did some introspection and decided to "double down" on my intolerance for people who are, how should I put this... intolerant of others.
One difference is that while I find your lifestyle to be hateful towards at least one minority group, I actually think you should be allowed to live your lives with the same rights as everyone else. You take your beliefs and translate them into political action that would attempt to legislate your own twisted version of morality, thereby infringing on the rights of others.

Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 14 2009 @ 10:20AM
sanguine says:

JF, you said it better than I did. Some of the religious right groups in the U.S. want to do exactly what the Taliban and other groups do: make everyone live by their religious rules.

As a Christian, I believe that the way I live my life should be an example to others, and I shouldn't have to yell at them, beat them, lock them up, or create laws in order for them to live like I do.

Posted On: Wednesday, Oct. 14 2009 @ 11:42AM
Paul says:

This is the point that I like to chime in and state that Kirk and First Baptist are not the only Christian folks out there. They do not represent my beliefs, I see them as an abomination of the teachings of a 1st century Jewish man. (got your back Robert)

We are the Christians who don't worry about heaven and hell. We worry about justice and compassion. We believe in meaningful dialogue. We sing Clash songs in church!

So if you have been wounded by the "works" of the likes of 1st Baptist and little Kirk but still want to be a Christian, there are places where you can find safety.
