A Very Brief History of the DISD, Ca. 1966

• I was searching for a quote I had read of W.T. White, the DISD superintendent who said in the 1970's that desegregation would happen in the DISD only if he was personally ordered by the courts to comply - I ended up distracted by the Google Books scan of the December 1988 Texas Monthly (as well as the Life Magazine issue on Hurricane Carla in 1961). Here was the money quote regarding DISD: "When he [Superintendent Nolan Estes] left in 1979, though, what remained was a bloated administration geared toward snooping out federal funds and writing a fancy cirriculum as well as a nasty scandal involving misappropriation of DISD funds, which threatened the financial footing of the district." • I found a 1966 Dallas phone book at my grandmother's and it still had schools listed as "White" and "Colored". So those were not really the "good ol' days" for all. Of course if you want all-white you still have HPISD.

• Integration did not do some of us any favors.

• Segragration reform screwed up our schools.

• Love that ending quote from the Apocrypha. How many current DISD students do ya think can tell you what the heck that is?
