Yes, But Will DISD Kids Watch Obama?

What kind of policy is that? Leave it up to the principals and teachers? I'm sure they love that. That's your basic no-win situation.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 11:57AMI know that if I was a parent, I would want to watch any political speech my children were subjected too. This would allow me to explain to my children why I agreed and/or disagreed with what was said.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:13PMYou know the speech is not just being televised in schools right, Tim?
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:23PMWhat a crock of shit. Obama is going to give a speech which will "challenge students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning". What is WRONG with that?
The stupidity of Republicans can sometimes boggle the mind.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:34PMThe funniest thing is watching local pundit Rod Dreher milk blog hit moolah for himself by making fun of Republican public school parents as "crazypants" for not exposing their children to Obama's speech.
While carefully shielding his own home-schooled children from the wholesale evils of either public or private schools.
Those ridiculous, crazypants Republicans.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:41PMActually it doesn't sound that crazy at all for a parent to not want his kid being 'eased into' Obama's presence. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/census/2009-08-26-census-kits-schools_N.htm
I can certainly understand it. Can't say which way I would go since I don't have children.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:41PMWhen W tried to do the same thing, the Democrats threw a hissy fit that he was trying to brain wash the children. Of course if he was giving a pep rally to encourage the kids to excel at their studies, most people would be for it. Unfortunately it looks like the great/grate orator is going to give a carefully nuanced lecture that will carefully triangulate itself in to a dull mush that will bore the kids and infuriate their parents.
And most of the kids will wonder why this guy gets a show during school hours and Sponge Bob can't.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:41PMWhat is WRONG with that?
So why not release the speech ahead of time and let parents vet it?
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:42PMAnd it was partison bullshit when the democrats were complaining, too. Jesus christ, when did political philosophy in this country become "the other side does it too so that makes it ok?
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:55PMI have a grandson in high school. I suspect that he and his buddies will care not a twit about the speech and not watch it. At their age, they will be checking out the lovely young ladies in their midst.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:55PMYes, all children must watch the Leader. It is for their own good. He knows what is best for them. Dissent from Republican parents must no longer be tolerated. Use the police if necessary to enforce total compliance with His wishes.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 12:58PMHow about NO presidents- Bush, Obama, etc.- have televised speeches directed at children during school hourws? Instead of telling them they need education, allow (or force) teachers to do their jobs...
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:01PM"What is WRONG with that?"
So why not release the speech ahead of time and let parents vet it?

It doesn't matter to me, but the concern is still pretty stupid. If Bush was going to do it I wouldn't care. I would only be concerned that my kid would be coming home unable to speak proper English.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:02PMOccam's razor says the simplest explanation is that Republicans are, "batshit crazy".
ABC's Jake Tapper noted today, for example, that in 1988, then-President Reagan spoke to students via C-SPAN telecast. During Q&A, Reagan "talked about opposition to gun control and other issues." Does this count as "indoctrination," too?

Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:14PMIs there a dunce cap big enough for the state of Texas.
Anyone who grew up here, knows what this is about. It is so fucking obvious.
I am just waiting for Texas to start using the N word in school books.
If Pres. Obama reads a prayer, will the Republicans be against prayer in school? I think the idea of the President addressing schoolchildren is good.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:24PMThat's right, if you disagree with Obama about anything, it's because you're a racist.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:30PMJack, we need not bring up the spectre of the N word....Bush is out of office, and we never have to hear it pronounce NUKULAR ever again

Not if you disagree, but if constantly
make attempts to misrepresent the message.
When the Republican party DIAGREES with EVERYTHING....yes..it is bigotry.
And pretty much anything that comes from you RoB, we can rest assured comes from some anti inclusive point of view.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:42PMIn regards to that Census link above, I love this line:
"The Constitution mandates a complete population count every 10 years."
That should be printed and stapled to the forehead of everyone who whines about "overreaching government power" while trying to argue about what the Constitution does and does not include.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:48PMUsually, I'm pretty politically aware and conscious, but if you had told me the facts ahead of time, there is no way I could have anticipated that this sort of thing would have caused a ruckus. I just don't get it.
Sigh. I've got a long history of voting for Republicans, but I long for the day that people don't see the other side's guy (or girl) as the embodiment of evil. *cough*
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:48PMHe's the freakin' President of the United States for Chrissake!!!
I can't believe he isn't being allowed to speak to students about education. On second thought, it probably is a good idea because we are doing such a bang up job of it here on our own.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:49PMJack, you're better than that, or so I thought...
Toots, I've got a question for ya...as the proud owner of 26 cats, do you blame the Republican Party when one of them takes a crap on your pillow?
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:50PMBush the Elder addressed schoolchildren. Bush Fils read My Pet Goat -- which was stocked top to bottom with less-than-subtle propaganda encouraging waterboarding and warrantless wiretapping "just in case anything really bad should happen I mean, uh -- very -- if something terrible should happen very soonly, even today, to this great nation which we who love so much would see destroyed by evildoers."
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:55PMYou're right, Jack. Because Texas isn't diverse at all.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 1:55PMIf I remember correctly, Reagan had a speech about the War on Drugs when I was in high school. We all laughed our asses off at the absurdity of this old white dude telling us about the "gateway" drug Marijuana. This is your brain, yadayadayada. That worked out well.
Don't know the speech Obama is making specifically but bet it's going to be much more inspirational than that load of crap. BTW, let me know when we win that War on Drugs thing.
And pretty much anything that comes from you RoB, we can rest assured comes from some anti inclusive point of view.
"Anti inclusive?" After all my efforts in support of the right of drag queens to teach kindergarten, I get this as thanks. That hurts, that really hurts.

No Steve...Texas is the coolest most diverse state I have ever lived in. Even more so than California. My point is that
Texas is far more diverse that these teabaggers, birthers, and deathers make it out to be. These Texans are not represented properly in Texas government.
I don't have kids, so this issue is no hair off my ass. I just think it makes our entire state looks bad because there is no rational reasoning behind it.
Lakewooder, sorry, I am not better than that. But you will not get a pissing match from me. I call it as I see it as you do.
As far as the war on drugs.....well Reagan is dead and drugs are still here....so I guess the drugs won that war. I enjoyed that war far more than I did the one in Iraq.

From what the Tranny prostitutes in NO told me, Tony Perkins has a REALLY tiny cock. One tranny said the last time he/she saw something like that it had an eraser on the end of it.
So, I doubt that it hurts ROB; but, it's nice to know that you care...........:-)
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 2:44PMjak e jett....The Great State of Texas doesn't need a dunce hat, the straw hat fits just fine.
When they do come out with that new school book you speak of I would love to be the first to own one, so let me know. I have no idea what race you are, but I am sick and tired of whiney liberals using a double standard to try to make me look racist and them look oppressed. If I remember correctly everyone is equal, so give up the slave/segregation crutch you lean on that keeps you uneducated, sitting on your couch, collecting welfare that comes from my back pocket, or in jail. Then go out and take advantage of all the scholarships, jobs, and other organizations that are for blacks only, then whine about how bad it is. It's like I have to spot a black man 10 points because I'm white- now that's equality.
By the way my Texas school district has opted out of the speech also, because they want some kids to show up at school that day.
As far as Texas goes......If you don't love it leave it. I'll help you pack, and good ridance
Jack, it always puzzles me how folks like you (and I don't specifically mean gays) can accuse conservatives of being vicious and full of "hate" and then go making nasty, ugly remarks like the one you just made.
btw, I have little doubt that if a straight person made the equivalent remark to a gay person on Unfair Park, Wilonsky would jump on it in a second as "getting too personal." I'm not asking for censorship, it's just an observation.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 2:52PMI love how NEWT says he's sick of a"double standard to try to make me look racist" and then proceeds to go on a racist tirade. You can't buy that kind of funny.

White--Straight--Conservative=Evil
C'MON MAN, YOU KNOW THE DRILL
The White House said Wednesday that the president's address is intended to be an inspirational, pro-education message to all students at the beginning of the school year. But critics objected to the language of one of the lesson plans, for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 6, which suggested that students "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president." Another assignment for students after hearing the speech was to discuss what "the president wants us to do."
Forget democrats and republicans, forget that the US is really a republic and not a democracy. Forget 1984, and the Illustrious Leader making speeches to the kids - to keep the parents in line - and report them if they get out of line.
Remember that this is the United States, and we were founded on the ideals of freedom and self control - not external control.
Remember that we are not subjects to Obama, and that he has no more power than ANY elected Representative.
Remember that the kids are our future.
Do you really want them indoctrinated by a man who has already proven himself a liar ten times over?
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 3:05PMWhat did Newt say that was a "racist tirade"? Enlighten us all.

Thats no tirade......it's a matter of fact. All of my negro and mexican friends work hard every day and and get collected from just like I do (they don't kike it much either). I have no problem with the color of anyones skin as long as there is equality, and it doesn't get used as a crutch for things that happened 50 years ago.
NEWT sure is living up to his moniker.
@Matthew - good point, the Bush administration never lied. Oh, wait...

I really think you're reading way too much into it. The most obvious answer to those "lesson plan" questions is "study hard and stay in school."
Let's not assume evil lurks around every corner here.

But what would politics be if evil isn't lurking around every corner?
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 3:54PMI still just don't get it. Dropout rates are insanely high and the president wants to get out a message to kids about the importance of staying in school. Can anyone give me a realistic scenario where that becomes a form of propaganda or indoctrination? Seriously?
"School is important (just like communism) so all you kids should be sure and (become a socialist right now) stay in school."
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 4:05PM"BTW, let me know when we win that War on Drugs thing."
Another war the Republicans will never win... tally that one up with Iraq.
....Oh, and Newt... We're so proud of you for having 'negroes' as friends. That's so inclusive of you. Go fuck yourself you steaming pile of white trash. I'm usually not that blunt, but you deserve it.

Must be afraid they'll go to college and become liberals.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 4:58PMMatt--
Your exactly the person I am talking about, no matter what I say, no matter how I live, and no matter what I do for my fellow man; it will never be good enough-I'm always a racist, but nothing could be further from the truth. You pick out one little word, and bring out your liberal petty pissy act without understanding anything that is said.
You were evidently offended by the word negro (I'll leave it out of qoutations because it is just a word),which is the kind of funny you can't buy, because you then turn right around and call me white trash. The truly funny part about the whole bit is, you can call me white trash-whitey-cracker-hillbilly-mick-wheto-redneck or whatever and I could care less. Along with most whities I know, I am proud of most of those names, and you and your opinion can get bent.
By the way, I probably have more black friends than you do (maybe you'll like that word better).
Also I would like to say sorry for the hard feelings, but I'm sure it wouldn't help. That's just who you are.
Did a post contain the word "negro" and the guy really thought that was ok?
So Newt - since 1950 where have you been?
At least he didn't say colored I guess.
His Oriental friends probably can't wait to hang out.
And you know Jack, he probably has tons of fairy friends too.
Sheesh!
So using the word negro is racist now? I knew that African American was the term most widely used, but i had no idea negro had now been branded a racial epithet. Somebody needs to tell the racists at the United Negro College Fund to take some tolerance classes.
I see Oriental is now a racial epithet too? What about Latina? Hispanic? It's so hard to keep up with the politically rules of the perpetually offended.
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 6:18PMMany parents don't want their kids to see that black man telling white kids to stay in school.
He should be telling that to little black kids
Texas has a long proud history of keeping the blacks "in their place". So now we got to listen to one of them blacks lecturing our white kids to stay n school??
If Obama wants to push a broom down the school halls, that's ok. But to put that black man in a suit and tie and have a bunch of secret service men and reporters crowd around him...treating him like he's the president of the United States or something like that....
Now that's more than our lillie white hearts can take.
I miss the good old days when those darkies had to address us as "massah", don't you
For goodness sake, if the guy can convince a few more students to stay in school and start caring about their education, give him a chance.
Check out http://detentionslip.org for this, and more crazy headlines from our schools.

Newt Gingrich - "Why is it political for the president of the United States to discuss education?"
"So using the word negro is racist now?"
Absolutely, didn't you get the memo? Like United Negro College Fund. All a bunch of racists obviously. And "colored" is even worse which is why there would never be an organization called National Association for the Advancement of Colored People because it would be even more racist....
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 3 2009 @ 9:17PMscott says:
the UNCF was founded in 1944, NAACP 1909. Some things have changed since then
---------------
Yeah, a lot of things have changed since then, except for, you know, the name United Negro College Fund. And please, keep accusing anybody who dares to disagree with Dear leader of racism, it's entertaining watching you make fools of yourselves.
"Many parents don't want their kids to see that black man telling white kids to stay in school."
-------
Okay, point taken, but isn't this exactly why we elected Obama? The white half can tell the white kids to stay in school and the black half can lecture to the black kids.
Unfortunately, the Asians and Latinos and the rest are just going to have to deal. Racism is a black/white thing. They wouldn't understand.
(See my above posts if you want to know what I really think about all this.)
