NY Times: Jerry Jones Spent $1.15 Billion For "a Somewhat Crude Reworking of Old Ideas"

Sure, I know the Death Star's fashionable and all, but nobody thinks Cowboys Stadium looks like the Legion of Doom's HQ?

At this late date -- which is to say, two days before the Dallas Cowboys finally play a meaningful game in Arlington -- what's left to say about Jerry Jones's $1.15-billion EnormoDome? Enough, clearly, to fill the top of Page B11 and most of Page B13 in this morning's New York Times with architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff's assessment. (There's also this Web-only review, which is like NPR with pictures.) Ouroussoff offers a brief history lesson -- and, no, it was not "the city" that "rejected the [Fair Park] plan as too costly," but the county, which, in 2004, was presented by Jones with an unrealistic time line and outrageous demands. He then gets to the point: The joint's awful big, all right, but so what?
Cowboys Stadium suffers from its own form of nostalgia: its enormous retractable roof, acres of parking and cavernous interiors are straight out of Eisenhower's America, with its embrace of car culture and a grandiose, bigger-is-better mentality. The result is a somewhat crude reworking of old ideas, one that looks especially unoriginal when compared with the sophisticated and often dazzling stadiums that have been built in Europe and the Far East over the last few years. Worse for fans, its lounges and concourses are so sprawling that I suspect more than a few spectators will get lost and miss the second-half kickoff.

Erik says:

These east coast people are just jealous that Texas has a stadium nicer than those in their own backyard. A New York columnist will never give Texas credit. This is an amazing stadium and something special to North Texas. I heard the stadium will employ 10,000 workers during events. This is great for the area. I am proud to have this stadium open in N. Texas.

Erik, do you suggest that Nicolai Ouroussoff doesn't really mean what he says in his critique?

Clearly, the man isn't jealous. How can someone be jealous of something he doesn't even like?

Stop being so insecure. If you like Cowboys Stadium, then fine! Like it, and tell us why.

Troy says:

I've always said the stadium is downright ugly. It looks like a huge tacky UFO landed in the middle of huge car dealership (that's located in a ghetto). I'm sure the interior is state of art, but the exterior is just downright awful and really just looks like an update of the old stadium. In comparison to other newer stadiums this one is simply the worst. All I can say good about it is that it fits in well with it's surroundings...like the Walmart across the street.

Burrito Jimmy says:

I assume that,since he hates the"crude reworking of old ideas",he must despise the almost EXACT replica of Yankee Stadium that was opened only a few miles from his office not six months ago.

I say "almost" because,in this latest incarnation,a nine year old girl could hit a home run to right field.

In Texas Stadium the players worried about rain, sleet, snow and the heat. In the Death Star they have to worry about the punter hitting the Screen Monster. I never like football played in a dome and let's face it that's what this is. I liked it when football was played in the elements. I used to love when the Vikings played in the bad weather and now they play in the Hefty Dome.

Rawlins in Blunderland says:

As a Dallas homeowner..(aka 'property tax payer'): Jerry's Stadium looks a whole lot prettier to me knowing that the people of Arlington, Texas, not me, are paying out their kazoo to subsidize Jones' Throne Room for the 'Dallas' Cowboys.
~~~~~~~~
As for the NYT columnist doing his best to once again prove how cluelessly provincial are the Manhattan Islanders, (remember when Cindy Adamas described the rolling hills and lakes and horse stables of Preston Hollow?) In all fairness to Arlington... which is in Tarrant County, not Dallas....the columnist waves away Arlington as if it's a sleepy bedroom community suburb nat which hardly makes sense when you note that its has close to 400,000 people calling it home. And lying 12 miles from Ft. Worth city limits vs. 20 miles from Dallas' border makes it, if anything, a suburb of the former.
(Arlingtonians: Does that post win me a seasonal pass to Six Flags or something?)
Spare Me says:
Wow, a Dallas resident sticking up for Arlington???? That will get you flamed and banned from this board sir. By the way, we are not really paying "out our kazoo". The investmet was an intelegent business decision by the residents that will pay dividends for many years to come.
Kevin says:
All stadia are ugly. They're all required to hold a huge number of seats with relatively decent sight-lines to a fixed size target viewing area (aka the field.)
If you have a lot of people, you need a lot of parking, because people here are too stupid to just run a train line.
So, why is anyone surprised we have the Death Star and the area it blew away with it's landing?
Buffalo Bill says:
I'm just astounded that they decided to keep the hole in the roof. Although it was certainly a "distinctive feature" of Texas Stadium, it was also what made the stadium unbearable for fans, regardless of whether the weather outside was hot (September) or cold (December).
They did it right in Houston: When the roof is open, both the fans and players get to enjoy the outdoors. And Reliant has real grass.
Yes. And still nearly as many parking spaces as there are in Arlington.
I wish there was a rail line to that area, though. I've taken the DART to events at the AAC, and it's so much nicer than trying to drive down there and park, etc. Looking forward to taking the Green Line to the fair this year.
Obama's Seat says:
Living in the shadow of the stadium, I don't think the "Arlington ain't nobody's damn suburb" slogan works anymore. It feels like Arlington is a suburb of Jerry Jones now.
I don't buy this "stadium" thing anyway. It's clearly a DoD installation, a launch facility.
Rantanamo says:
Buffalo, Cowboys Stadium has a retractable roof just like Reliant and it has retractable doors.
And Reliant has grass because its grown in squares and brought into the stadium. Players hate it, and it doesn't work well as the season goes on. Wouldn't be surprised if they go to turf.
As for those with this grass, mud, rain cold love, I have to ask if they ever played football in these conditions? Not fun, not safe(especially for guys making millions) Much better for the fans as well. Please show me the torrential rain game where the fans actually sat through it. You can't find it, they run for cover under the stands.
Posted On: Friday, Sep. 18 2009 @ 6:33PM
scott says:
I've been going to Cowboy's games for 35yrs. I don't believe I've once stopped coming or going to spend a dime. If we needed to hit a store, we were sure to do it in our own neighborhood so as to avoid anymore traffic. When the game let out, we just wanted to get home, or hit a bar on Greenville or what not.
Please explain to me how Arlington will benefit again? You get a couple dozen events a year if lucky. When the Superbowl comes, the Gaylord Texan will get more benefit than all of Arlington. Good luck with all of that.
Posted On: Friday, Sep. 18 2009 @ 6:48PM
Buffalo Bill says:
Rantanamo,
You're missing my point. Cowboys Stadium, for some reason, sought to "preserve" the worst part of Texas Stadium: a roof structure that ensured that everyone---players and fans---was uncomfortable, regardless of whether it was hot or cold. Obviously, that won't be an issue in a domed stadium; my comment was simply designed to question Jerry's bizarre desire to mimic the worst design flaw in an otherwise-forgettable stadium.
Moreover, Cowboys Stadium does not have a retractable roof "just like Reliant does." Reliant has a roof that, when open, allows ALL of the fans to be outdoors, not just the players. Having been to games in Houston on beautiful afternoons in November and December, I can say that I would much rather sit in the sun that in the shade. The vast majority of the fans couldn't get that at Texas Stadium and they won't be able to at Cowboys Stadium either.
Finally, with regard to your last question, having grown up in Buffalo, I have been to several games in heavy rain, as well as snow/sleet. Most fans stay in the stands and watch. The same is true in Green Bay, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. I understand that it's easier for fans to stay warm than to cool off, and that dome stadiums have a certain attractiveness to them for that reason. But if my ticket prices are going to support the extra cost for the retractable roof, I want to enjoy the benefits on nice days as well as the shitty ones.
Let me just go ahead and sum up all the responses and this thread and threads with any similar criticisms. "Texas is the greatest place on earth, beyond reproach. New York is a filthy backwater town that could never compare." Lol the whole world is laughing.
John says:
I believed of you missed the point this NY critics is saying. All it is saying is bigger not equal to better. In some situation, accessibility can be a more important factors for its users. For instance, today I heard from a forum that one of the fan's vehicle was broken down before the game. He is trying to get to the stadium by public transportation from downtown Dallas. However, this simply doesn't exists. He or she have to rent a car and pay $75 parking just to see a game. While most people have no objections with the size, a landmark stadium of the city should be located in a public spaces that provided more accessibility to its citizen. Also it should have some facilities to maintain its sustainability. By means of that, I mean facilities to increase the life span of these stadium including energy saving equipment and reusable materials because we don't want to throw it again again after 35 years again. We may want to use it for 50 or 60 years. Just like we use the Capitol building in US for over 100 years.
Spare Me - "The investmet was an intelegent business decision". Well, that summarizes Arlington and its voters neatly, doesn't it?
