you don't get out much do you. Derby is alive and thriving in Dallas. There are 2 growing Woman's leagues and we even have a Men's league now, you should join so we could teach you something about this "trend" you can't learn from your couch.

I don't know how one could say that derby was about to die a natural death when there are over 150 leagues nationwide that are getting together every weekend THIS MONTH to battle their regional competitors in nationally recognized, official tournaments. Not mention that it's spreading like wildfire overseas, taking over England, Sweden, New Zealand...
Today's roller derby operates by its own standards, meaning each league is run by the skaters themselves, not greedy, trend-following owners looking to make a buck. Today's roller derby will perpetually evolve with the modern age, meaning you can ignore roller derby but as long as it runs rampant through the hearts of skaters and fans who get together and make it happen this sport will never die.
How can anyone deny the genius of DIY roller derby??? Contact sport on wheels + subcultural ideals and grassroots approach+ a couple-a-brews = an undeniably fun, addictive, and life-altering experience.
I'm just sayin'.

We got wristbands then when it was FINALLY time to go inside for autographs, all but 15 PEOPLE were turned down. If you only had time to let 15 people in for autographs, then only hand out 15 wristbands and don't waste people's time. You are trying to promote a movie to people to make them WANT to see it, but you succeeded in making so many people mad. I have such a bad taste in my mouth after today that I don't even care about the movie anymore...and get this...I am a DERBY GIRL!
We should AT LEAST get FREE movie tickets for standing in the rain so long and the media people that told us to leave did not even care. I guess you don't care about the people that make your job possible...without people, your promotional efforts would all be for nothing. Without people, who would watch your movies.

Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 17 2009 @ 11:49AMActually, there are over 445 leagues worldwide, most in the US, and over 16,000 participants. That's more than all of the roller derby leagues that ever existed prior to 2003 put together, and about 75 times the number of skaters and officials that worked in roller derby up to 2003.
Also, roller derby was never a *sport*. The game might have been played for real to around 1967 or so, but there weren't true national leagues with independent owners of teams. There were maybe 4 or 5 interleague games in all those prior 65 years or so.
Today, nearly every league plays other leagues, mostly flat track. Sometimes flat track leagues play a banked track game, sometimes banked track leagues play other leagues in flat track games.
Roller derby prior to 2001 was never a DIY sport. Skaters never got together for pickup games in parking lots and basketball courts. Kids teams were for children of pro-skaters only. Rules were never defined as a body of law the way they are today (over 3/4ths of the rules the pros played were unwritten "codes", or were made up on the spot during the legit days, or not enforced at all during the post '73 era).
The nice thing today is that flat track derby is legitimized, meaning that as long as a bunch of skaters want to play and have some chalk or tape, there will be games. That's not to say legitimate banked track isn't also a sport where they play it that way (and are influenced by what's happening in flat track), but that's a rare resource that isn't trivial to possess or maintain an infrastructure for.
In my book, the story of modern roller derby starts in 2001. Whatever came before that, was like a dream that went away when the sun came up.

I agree that Derby is all over the place. I have been going for a few years, but with constant rule changes, many times one or two times during a season, makes the game unwatchable and BORING. For instance the stepping out of bounds with one foot. All it is is referee whistles all night.
They begin taking the fun out of roller derby when they started taking themselves too seriously as a legitimate sport. No penalty wheel, no fighting (even if it was mostly staged), no mascots.
These events are mainly family and friends attending, at least in Dallas. Used to be a lot of fun....now, not so much.
