Phantom Menace: Billy Zane Needs Some Helicopters in Downtown Dallas, Pronto!

Categories: From the RTF Department

If you're downtown this afternoon -- say, beginning at 4 p.m. but most likely after dark-thirty -- and start to wonder what the what those helicopters are doing flying so danged low, fret not: It's all for Billy Zane! (See? The Phantom? Get it? Forget it.) Or maybe you forgot: Back in June we told you that Fox was producing for ABC a mid-season replacement series called The Deep End, which is, sigh, another hourlong drama set in ... dunh-dunh-dunh ... "one of L.A.'s most prestigious law firms."

They're two days into shooting the first episode -- and, so far, ABC has only ordered six, including the pilot sneak-peeked at top. Odd thing is, the show's actually set in Los Angeles, but they're shooting here. Which is why Janis Burklund, director of the Dallas Film Commission, has been trying to convince producers to actually set the show here. No luck so far."They will occasionally do some B-roll in Los Angeles, but the lion's share is being shot in Dallas," she tells Unfair Park.

But, she says, today's set -- a fabtastic downtown rooftop -- "looks very L.A.-ish." Yes, yes it does. They don't call the show The Deep End for nothing. Wha?

Daniel says:

If Fox produces a series under contract to ABC, don't they have a vested interest in making it suck? It's like Coke manufacturing a product for Pepsi.

Daniel, Fox actually produced Boston Legal for ABC.

JF says:

I guess it's good that they're filming here for economic reasons, but I don't really consider it a compliment that our downtown looks "very LA-ish"

John Travolta says:

From Bank of America Building Management:

This is a special message from the Downtown Emergency Response Team:

A Film crew will be downtown today @ 4 PM on Main Street. It is a closed set, majority of the filming will be inside and on the rooftop.

Filming will also require scenes being filmed over the building from a helicopter between the hours of 4:00pm - 7:00pm and 8:00pm - 10:00pm.

This filming will NOT affect rush hour traffic and there are no street closures in connection with the filming.

The Office of Special Events has obtained the appropriate clearances from Aviation and the Department of Transportation to proceed with this filming.

Dallas Police Officers will be on site to assist with intermittent traffic control and to ensure safety.

Twentieth Century Fox has also contacted the FAA to obtain the clearance for the airspace.

I was walking to Which Wich for lunch today and noticed the huge crew along Main in front of the Joule.

As for the rooftop scenes: how can Dallas look anything like L.A. when we have no mountains in the background?

net boogie says:

This is going to suck . . . Billy Zane is the worst actor on the planet! And the dialogue . . . yikes.

The trailer looks TERRRRR-ible....

"They're trying to make a difference... they're in over their heads... and they're exactly where they need to be..."

Who writes this stuff?

Bud Lite says:

I heard this show was shooting in Dallas, but didn't believe it. Very cool. btw- Deb from Nepolean Dynamite is Tina Majorino and she was also the little girl, Molly in Corrina Corrina... she is so cute... what a great actor. And come on ladeda Billy Zane was great in Titanic as the A hole and it looks like that's what he plays here so...
Hopefully ABC will yank cougar and eastwick soon so we can see some real actors work.
