Wherein Carla Ranger Refers to Her Fellow Dallas ISD Trustees as "Dastardly"

Missed this one yesterday, mostly because Dallas Independent School District trustee Carla Ranger doesn't post to her blog as often as she used to. But one thing's got her attention: Fellow trustee Ron Price's proposal to rename schools for President Barack Obama and Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor, one of myriad subjects on the school board's briefing agenda today. Writes Ranger, she's still pissed off about how Price, Jerome Garza, Lew Blackburn and others tanked her recommendation to name a school for "outstanding African American scholar and educator Dr. John Hope Franklin ... in a dastardly way and in violation of Board policy."

Oh -- and she'll be damned if she's going to be the one to tell the 87-year-old widow of South Dallas educator Billy Earl Dade that, sorry, her late husband's name is coming off a DISD school. So, Ranger's voting against Price's recommendations -- hard.

My vote will be against any effort to use these two outstanding trailblazers for what appears to be a solely political agenda.

It is quite simple and easy to make recommendations in a timely manner that meet the requirements of Board policy. There are many deserving people at all levels -- local, state and national. Trustees have had plenty opportunity to make recommendations. It is done every year.

However, Trustees have shown a willingness to violate this policy.

On a very related note, this morning the DISD board will officially set the date for the special school board election. Price, Jerome Garza and Leigh Ann Ellis will have to fight to keep their spots, after the board was told, no, you can't just extend your terms just because you wanna.
