Glad the board has their priorities straight. 10 of their high schools are on the fed's list for being closed next year due to low achievement and dropouts, but this board continues to fiddle...
Stage 6 is closure. So the same Hinojosa who wanted to gut the magnets for title I purposes is totally unaware there are worse things in store for the majority of district high schools?

used to be, schools were named for people that had compiled a lifetime of achievement. good thing they didn't jump the gun in the old days or we may have been stuck with a Richard Nixon Elementary.

I am a fan of Obama, and think Sotomayor will be an excellent judge.

But even I think we should probably wait until after their terms in office to decide to name schools after them.

The next commencement speech could be: "Congratulations to this years graduating class from Token Hispanic or Other Minority to be Named Later School!"

Awww :-( you guys have got it so hard. Must be a total bummer to have a coronary over the name of a school. It's just a name, and what's even funnier is the assertion that while choosing a name even the most incompetent public body is "neglecting more important duties." Lol. That's like saying you're "wasting time" by making toast in the morning.

Is it fun to lament the "marginalization" of dead white guys, even though they've all got a dozen airports, giant heads carved into mountains, and hundreds if not thousands of schools, freeways, and other public structures in their names? Is it really so fun to pretend "dead white men" are being victimized just because a few schools might be named for the only African Americans & Hispanics who've served in the nations highest offices get a couple of schools named after them? Does it really signal what's wrong with DISD, "minority communities", or the end of America as we know it? Or is it just people with good intentions thinking minority students might want minority rolemodels and to energize youth with names of people from their ethnic backgrounds who succeeded? You're free to disagree and I have absolutely no opinion on the matter personally, but to me the ones wasting their times are the ones who take time out of the day to tie this into "white dead men victimization" and spew vitriol in the face of such trivial matters.

It would make more sense to name a school after Dallas resident and former president George W. Bush, who put his daughters into a DISD elementary school.

I loved learning the glorious stories of the great Lake Highlands. He was really one of a kind.

I did attend John J Pershing, and that guy brutally occupied Mexico. Hell, "Blackjack" ain't the name of a choir boy.

We should probably wait until his term is up and America has gone (farther) to shit before we start naming schools after him. Who want's to go to Führer Highschool?
