JWP is probably planning on asking Lupe-Lesbian to let him take some trusties from the jail to wash his fleet of STOLEN cars on a daily basis. JWP only does what benefits him. He doesnt care about the citizens of Dallas other than using them to enrich himself & his ego.

Somehow I see another Federal Lawsuit on the horizon. So now we have a Jail who cant pass an inspection, a DA who is not going to prosecute people probably for years and a Commissioner who is only interested in STEALING Cars from it's citizens. WOW, maybe someone should contact Hollywood pitch all this as the next Prime-Time Soap. Might help to balance the budget.

JWP did not copy Judge Foster on his response letter, yet he copied the 3 other commissioners. That appears quite nasty and childish.

Sounds to me JWP is becoming the brother he's always preached, screamed and yelled against being for three decades, which is a sell-out to the man. Looks like the chickens have come home to finally roost.

Watkins has been doing an amazing job w/ his office, bringing out the innocent, wrongly prosecuted and keeping the rightfully guilty behind bars. I wonder if this "budget cut" is a bit of political revenge for his good deeds in the DA's office, a tit-for-tat from the same commissioners court who seem to lack the know-how to fund and run a jail that's rightfully failed numerous inspections, let alone can take care of other duties they have been tasked with. This is another reason the commissioners court system needs to be dismantled and those duties be placed with other entities all together.

I am surprised that Sheriff Valdez is not stepping up to support DA Watkins, as the county jail will bear the brunt of any backlog of cases caused by a lack of prosecutors. According to the information at last night's town hall meeting, none of the cities in Dallas County is planning to cut their police department budgets. So, defendants will likely come into the system at the same rate, but be reached in court at a slower rate, spending more time in jail. Then, the County Commissioners will come to Watkins (like they did in January 2007), and tell him the jail is full, so start releasing people. Not a good situation.

I understand that the Commissioners have nothing to lose by avoiding publicly engaging Watkins on this issue, because the election is not until next fall. From their perspective, I imagine they think Watkins will be forced to make the personnel cuts this year, and the voters will forget by the time the Commissioners stand for election in November.

The County's 2010 fiscal year starts on October 1, 2009 and runs through September 30, 2010. Maybe Watkins should take the extreme position at a more advantageous time-- instead of cutting 40 people now, saving 10% over the next fiscal year, he could keep his full staff for 90% of the year, and just don't prosecute during the last 10% of the year, when the money runs out. That would be September 2010, and would be sure to keep the voters' attention on the election in November. Perhaps that would help the Commissioners could "find" the money needed to keep the criminal justice system moving.
