H&M Is Coming. Just Not to Downtown.

And not tomorrow. Or next month. But soon. You see, back in June, several Friends of Unfair Park were awfully tickled by the city's proposed efforts to lure retailers to downtown -- if only because the wish list included H&M, which gets as close as St. Louis or Las Vegas, depending upon in which direction you're headed. On Friday, whilst reporting the follow-up, I reached out to Sue Sernett, the trendy clothier's real estate manager in Chicago, to see if anyone locally had contacted the company to entice it to move to downtown. She replied thusly this morning:
At this time, I have not been contacted by anyone for downtown Dallas. I am not using broker representation as our target locations are in the malls. That has been my focus for our initial entry into the Dallas market. I have no signed leases in the market at this time.
Which, of course, begged the follow-up: Does that mean H&M is indeed looking to enter the Dallas market sooner than later? A few minutes later, she sent this:
Yes, H&M is looking at expanding in the Dallas market. It could be late 2010 or early 2011 but that won't be confirmed until we have leases signed. Glad to hear that folks in Dallas are getting excited. It should be really fun.

Well, FINALLY. H&M has really taken its time expanding to this region, where any other retailer would kill to have this kind of demand for their store. Why not take advantage of leasing rates now, when they are low, instead of signing late in 2010 or early 2011 after an economic recovery?

As for downtown, I'm annoyed the city hasn't contacted them, but it was always a long shot to think that the first H&M in the region would be outside of North Park or Park Lane.

At this point, I would be happy with anything opening downtown: an urban JCPenney (like the new one in NY) or Best Buy, even a GAP or Old Navy.

I WOULD KILL FOR AN H&M, I don't care where it was located. well...it would suck if it was at the Galleria, but I'd still shop there like woah.

Kidding. What's H&M?

Has anyone reading this blog ever shopped at a local retailer? Many of them are actually pretty nice. Or, you can take your old stuff to a taylor and they can make your old out-of-style clothes cool again. These local co. are actually pretty sweet and do a very good job. You should check them out. Personally, I would rather see 50 vibrant local stores in down town than have it look like just another Suburban strip mall. But that's really only because I don't like sending my money to London in exchange for cheap clothes when I could support hardworking small businesses here in Dallas.

Maybe it's just me.

H&M is also rumored to be heading to San Antonio at The Rim. I love local designers and boutiques just as much as the next girl but seriously, H&M is a retail masterpiece. It is amazing and has better quality clothes than its counterparts Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. And oh by the way @dallasm, H&M is not from London, (it is from Sweden), I think you may be confusing it with the highly overrated and useless Topshop.

Dallasm, you buy your jeans at Wal-Mart because what's the point in spending more than $30 on pants, right?

Phil says:

Seriously, H&M and Trader Joe's are the most ridiculous retailers around. Ridiculous not just because they're good stores, but because they've taken so long to get to DFW. Both stores exist in St. Louis, which is a small market with no growth and lousy shopping, and yet the two companies have dragged their feet with Texas. Who knows what kind of pills these corporate execs are on. Also, a bit less ridiculous but still quite so is the departure of Bloomingdale's from the DFW market and their unwillingness to return. We have four Nordstrom stores and three Nordstrom Racks in DFW--all doing very well. Does Bloomingdale's think it's FUNNY that they're missing out on all our business?

scott says:

I have no idea, nor interest in this store. I wanted to ask who the fuck goes to malls? Seriously, why would you shop at some place that has to overcome such ridiculous rents, traffic, the unbearable douche factor and having to walk miles and miles.

I guess some of you are all about the hype and damn the price. I tell you, I offer meticulously designed landscapes and always think about value. Though, I suspect those of you so name brand conscious can call Lambert's or Northaven, meet their most junior designers, who've never had to maintain their own work, and who are forced to over plant to meet their minimums.

Unlike clothes and all the other home improvements landscaping actually appreciates over time. I specialize in perennials, which are plants that return every year, or remain year to year. That way, you don't have to pay so much for annual color that has to be changed out seasonally. That way, you'll have extra money to spend on you wardrobe.

Look for my add in the Advocate magazines, I been there for 15 yrs, landscaping for 25.

Great! They're coming to Dallas FINALLY. But, how about joining the freaking 1990's and adding online shopping to their website? That would be enough to tide us all over until they either build a store or squat in a mall. I'm betting their target is Stonebriar.

Tex-patriate says:

H&M is completely overrated. If a Gap truck and an Express truck got in a wreck, you'd have H&M. I've been to just about everyone of them in NYC, both willingly and unwillingly, and that is my verdict.

Do yourself and Dallas a favor: go downtown and spend some money at the stores that are taking the risk to move down there.

...and yes, I buy my jeans from the clearance rack because what's the point in spending $75 on something that'll be $20 in two months?

Geninlamp says:

Wow people calm down, its "just" a retail clothing store, and yes it rocks, you get european fashion for less. Beats paying for roberto cavalli or D&G.
Trend for less.
Thats all, If you have negative things to say, dont shop there and certainly don't ruin it for those who anticipate have a branch locally.

As it would be nice.
Keep shopping at crusty places like forever 21 where your shirt rips if you reach to get a jar from the cabinet.
Or just in the washer.

To be honest, Texas does not have normal day to day people that know trends, they think they do, but that is just explained by them thinking they are 30 thousand dollar millionaires.

Real fashion is from europe.

To Tex-patriate,

Funny, because I work at H&M and the jeans are $40. Also, we have jean sales many times a year where jeans are reduced to $20...

I'm completely happy that H&M is expanding. It came here in Minneapolis in 2005 and it's done amazingly well here ever since. In fact, it's one of the most trafficked stores at the Mall of America.

Posted On: Thursday, Nov. 19 2009 @ 11:17AM
K says:

Finally! I love H&M.

Tex, I live in downtown Dallas. Tell me which clothing stores I can shop at as an alternative to H&M. There were exactly two in the Main Street area and they are both now closed. The prices at those boutiques were ridiculous - we need affordable clothing here, not more for the Neiman's crowd. If local designers would get downtown space and not charge $50 for a t-shirt that will only be fashionable this season, I'll buy. Until then, give me what I can afford. Even if it's at the mall.

David says:

If H&M would open, I'm sure it won't be downtown. Northpark has no space and Galleria has very small spaces available. H&M stores are usually big stores.

Either way H&M is the Old Navy of Europe. Zara, Topshop, and even Mexx are of better quality. H&M is trash and so are the people that buy that crap.

Posted On: Friday, Jan. 22 2010 @ 2:56PM
Zepher says:

I love H&M. I just moved back to Dallas from NYC, and it's one of the first things I missed.

For those of you complaining that it's trash and we need smaller boutiques, I say to you-psht!

I have 4 sweaters, two jackets, multiple shirts, multiple pairs of underwear, 2 hoodies, scarves, gloves, and 7 pairs of jeans from H&M, half of which Ive had for over a year. Nothing is torn, frayed, streched out, discolored, nappy, or any other signs of wear, and I wear my clothes out quickly. A pair of jeans I got as an xmas gift from American Eagle are already crapping out. Any shirt I have from A&F, Hollister, F21, or Topshop are all streched, and most have lost alot of color.

Not once have I paid over $35 for any item, so stop saying it's overpriced, especially if you've never even been to one. I've found items in H&M that are cheaper than similiar items you would find in Buffalo Exchange or Plato's, and those are handmedown stores!

Where else can you find top quality, great priced, easily accessorized, stylish clothing? Nowhere.

I think H&M would be one of the biggest additions to Dallas ever. Excluding the people on here who are obviously so stuck in their cowboy hats and small town minds to realize it, H&M would likely become the most shopped clothing boutique in DFW.

Just Sayin says:

I have really never understood what goes in behind the closed doors of places like Dallas Chamber of Commerce and other leaders who are supposedly pro-business.

How hard could it be to lure an H&M and a Strawberry to downtown? I'm sick of everything going to plastic exurbs like Frisco and Allen. Jesus Christ people, we may not all be millionaires in Dallas, but it's hardly the ghetto. Plenty of shopping demographics here.

And Dallas leaders, while you're at it, why don't you help promote tourist areas like Southside and Deep Ellum by putting in a direct off-ramp from the major freeways, and prominent signage? It's hard to get to those places even for a local. Imagine if you're a tourist.

You can build a billion dollar tollroad through our park, but you can't put a stinking exit for Deep Ellum off I-30?

DarlingN says:

@Geninlamp I beg to differ by you stating that day to day texans don't have fashion... I actually know what products I put on my self and I don't buy things because it's a label. And don't forget fashion comes from Asia too.
