Danny's original noted the fact he'd been drinking, it's been mentioned on Unfair Park countless times, and I said in the post above that he "partially blamed" the drug on his behavior. No one has ever obscured the fact Carter was drinking. But I should think by now that two years' worth of FDA investigations and hundreds of similar complaints and accounts concerning Chantix's effect on its users -- not to mention today's announcement -- should also give credence to the claim that the drug may have had some effect on his behavior that night.

It shocks me that it takes 2 years and nearly 300 suicide attempts to get the FDA to affix even a warning label to the drug.

Make that underlying difficulties.

It needs to be examined as to why cigarettes have become so exorbitantly addictive that smokers need a pill to quit. Also, Albrecht was drunk, as he had been a thousand times before, the booze didn't drive him nuts but the mixture did. However, I doubt each of the 98 completed suicides and the 188 attempts were mixing Chantix with scotch or whatever have you. This stuff is dangerous and a warning in the fine print shouldn't cut it. This stuff should be off of the market until it's safe.

It seems to me everyone is willing to give ol' dead carter and anyone of his ilk a pass on this issue. Lets be frank: Mixing booze + prescription meds is NEVER recommended, from OTC ibuprofen to class three narcs. He probably knew the risks and took it anyways, thinking it wouldn't affect him as he was somehow different. I really don't feel sorry for the guy or anyone in his little ticket/hipster circle. I feel worse for his neighbor, who had to put down the equivalent of a mad dog on 09/03/07, as he thought his house was being broken into at the time.

Damn, there are some jerks with anger management issues commenting on this. I trust Carter's friends - people who actually KNOW him - on this more than you insensitive morons. Jesus.

So someone who ignores the warning to not consume alcohol while taking the drug is going to heed this warning? What exactly is this supposed to accomplish?

Drugs that had the same warning as Chantix in 2007: Tylenol, Asprin, Zantec (for heartburn), Benadryl, Echinacea. Are you telling me that people who are taking echinacea to prevent a cold, or heart burn medication that down a bottle of wine with a designated driver at dinner deserve what they have "coming to them"? Shame on you.

98 completed suicides? That seems off the charts when you consider that the number of people taking Chantix is probably not that high.

One of my employees is on antidepressants and on Chantrix. What doctor in his right mind would write a prescription for Chantrix for someone who's clinicly depressed? Blows my mind.

Chris von Danger you absolutely should be able to defend yourself, your home and your loved ones. One should also take that responsibility and use appropriate force and good judgement to do so. I am not questioning his right in the eyes of the law, I understand Castle Doctrine. I am quesitoning his judgement in excersizing those rights. Just because it is legally right doesn't make it morally right. I linked in a article where "smokey" logg discusses "running over bikers before they can get away" while getting in a fight on tour. I wish it would have been anyone else's house Carter went to.

JN, you and I are pretty much on the same page of thought in this issue. Do I think Mr Logg intentionally put a bullet into his head, no I don't, nor did the courts accordingly. Do I stand behind his and others legal rights to defend their property, 100% I do. Like Toots, I do think carters side of the equation is a bit..dare I say...off kilter, as he had a history of late night drunken screaming matches with the girlfriend, his closets circle seems to testify to that in their comments.

I think the primary issue I and many others have in this case is the "sainthood" clause that seems to go into effect when carter or any other celeb, major or minor, receives in their passing. We seem to forget those minor details that he had his own demons when it came to the drink and issues with his girlfriend. Lets be honest: The guy was a bar musician who had his 15 mins w/ the New Bohs and his own project, he was friend w/ a guy at a major radio station in town who was also in his band, hence the total unnecessary, over the top promotion of the issue. Do I think his 15 mins are officially up, Yes I do. I think its time we put this thing to rest and move on with our lives

Well, if you were Carter's friend then you know how he was and I hope you really do move on.

I work for a mid-sized pharmacy chain and we've dispensed it about a 60 times since the beginning of the year which means it's pretty rare (at least to us it is).

A lot of people who got Chantix also got Xanax. I wonder if combining Chantix with an anti-anxiety med reduces the negative side effects of Chantix. Maybe taking Chantix alone is what's setting people off? I wonder how many people who took Chantix and had a negative reaction weren't taking anything else.

toots, you are a fucking non-informed idiot. it was at 4:02 am. and i did answer the call on the first ring, fearing something was wrong as i had never heard from ryann at that hour before. get your fucking facts straight. i was on the phone with her when she heard carter and bill arguing outside. logg was outside. he knew what he was doing. she knew logg's voice and heard him and carter having a loud conversation. logg was not holed up in his house fearing for his life. he engaged carter outside. for whatever reason, carter went to the back door. bill shot through a glass door. maybe he didn't mean to shoot and kill him, but at the very least it was highly irresponsible use of a firearm. you don't fire a warning shot near the head of someone you know personally and can see. ryann and i were on the phone when he was killed. neither of us heard the gunshot, as it came from inside the house. so if bill logg was inside his house, how could she have heard his voice, but not the recoil of a revolver? he was outside.
ryann and carter were not fighting for hours. it was a matter of seconds and he cut his hand and went outside. that's when she called me.
personally, i don't give a shit about anyone's opinion on this matter. make jokes. i don't care. be crass and vile and hurtful. it doesn't affect me. hell, some of the jokes are even funny. i joke about death all day. just don't go on some blogsite and put out information that is completely false on a situation that you know nothing about. fucking idiot.

Why would he lie, Toots? Seems to me by being on the phone with Ryann that he was closer to the scene than everyone except Carter, Ryann and Logg. Where do you get your facts from? The police report? Logg? Were you there? Where were you at 4:02 that morning?

The Big Guy is a P1, loves the Orphanage, and all that this implies.

But The Big Guy sees the age old conflict between the slacker/musician/Perpetual-Party-People vs. the people who have, well...grown up.

There is an "arrogance of cool" that surround those people who don't have day jobs, and are still able to make a living.

It is fun for those of us who have to work everyday (though The Big Guy loves what he does), to live vicariously though these PPP's that get to go out most nights, drink and stay up late, and not have to be anywhere at 0800 the next morning.

The truth is, what happened to CA could have just as easily happened to Dan Paul, D-Lane, Corby (up to when he had kids), or any one else who lives that lifestyle. If it wasn't Chatrix and booze, it could be drunk driving, or medical issues, or a fucked up armed bar patron.

Chantrix is so not the issue here...

The issue is that those PPP just totally HATE to contemplate the idea that acting like a 21 year old for 15 or 20 years is fucked up.

CA's friends don't want to explore CA's lifestyle because it holds a mirror up to their own, and causes them to wonder about their own partying (self-medication?) and their own choices.

It is much easier to just blame the drug, blame the FDA, blame the pharmaceutical companies or blame the shooter than it actually consider that a 34 year old man ought to know better than to drink to a blood alcohol level of .29 .

For Ryann and CA's other friends who sat with CA that night (and other nights), while he consumed (again, apparently) a large quantity of booze, it must feel horrible.

Quitting smoking was the least of CA's problems, it seems. His support structure let him down, by not taking the shot glass out of his hand.

Isn't it kind of stupid to blame the Chantrix when someone gets their blood alcohol level up into the high .20's??

No matter how horrible Chantrix is (and The Big Guy is pretty certain it is horrible), should they put a black label on it that says "By the way, dumbfuck, don't drink to more than 3X the legal limit"??

If that is the case, how many hundreds of other drugs will massively fuck you up when you bring your blood alcohol up that high??

Can everyone take a timeout from judging a guy dead for 22 months and start judging Steve McNair since his death is more recent? My support system could benefit from such wise counsel.
