zomg--in my dreams, i'm usually running in the *opposite* direction.
Posted On: Thursday, Jun. 11 2009 @ 4:56PMThat was like a crash course in "what not to do if you're in a car and you see a tornado." Not the sharpest knives in the drawer, those two.
Posted On: Thursday, Jun. 11 2009 @ 5:15PMNeeds more chick and less shirtless dude.
Posted On: Thursday, Jun. 11 2009 @ 5:29PMyeah it would be a shame to waste something that hot. Don't mess around with storms if you don't know what the hell you're doing.
Posted On: Thursday, Jun. 11 2009 @ 9:28PMI'm glad to see that I wasnt the only one that watched that video and thought that those two were morons. Actually, my first thought was that she was a moron and he was a pussy. He should have fought the director for final edit rights. Maybe hired someone else to voiceover his parts. I'm just sayin'.
Posted On: Thursday, Jun. 11 2009 @ 10:08PMPure idiocy. Also, exactly what no one should do during a tornado unless they want to end up in a hospital or in the ground.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 8:26AMWow, I guess I am missing what makes these folks complete idiots.
They were at the park, obviously jogging/running, saw the funnel, left to head home, got caught unexpectedly by the storm, arrived home safely.
It isn't like they were chasing it or something. They just got caught up in it like most people do, unfortunately.
Since there are so many tornado experts on this blog, what exactly should they have done?
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 8:37AMDuck & cover?..No wait, that was A-bombs...Stop, Drop, Roll...no, wait, that was hiding from cops in Jamaica but to stoned to care...lather, rinse, repeat?
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 9:04AMSounds to me like Ellum08 is one of the peeps in the vid.....

She heard the sirens and then saw the funnel, she knew the direction it was heading. They should have found the closest shelter which would probably have been the bathrooms at the track. Or at the very least just stayed put.
Having taken the high ground I kind of understand them. I've been flushed with adrenaline and have done some stupid things with regard to weather. When the tornado went through Fort Worth over off of 820 and Lancaster I was at UTA. Me and about 100 other students were standing on the main bridge over Cooper St. trying to get a better view of funnels over Fielder and I30. Not smart.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 9:09AMIs it me or does it feel like the 24fps it was shot in made it look..how should I say...too glossy to be real?

People, in a tornado you get in a solid structure, away from windows. In the event that you're out in the open, if something like an overpass isn't available, put your body in a low area like a ditch. Driving in a car is a very bad place to be.
How you can live in Texas and not know that blows my mind.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 9:21AM@tornillo
Actually NOT!
The National Weather Service has been advising people to abandon their car if caught outdoors during a tornado. Now it appears you might be safer staying in your car.
"We found no evidence to support the NWS suggestion that people should lie in a ditch during a tornado ..."

This looks like it was shot from an SLR with video... perhaps a D90 or 5D... just a guess.
Folks can see the posters version of events here:

Sounds like they were caught outside int he storm. Could happen to anyone... the front was moving at 50mph.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 10:05AMIf you're caught outside during a tornado, you should get out of your car and find a low area like a ditch. Lay down in the ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands.
Here's photographic evidence that trying to outrun a tornado in a car is stupid:

Also, getting under an overpass is a bad idea. I'm sure many people have seen that video shot where the TV crew was trying to outrun a weak (F2) tornado. When they finally figured out that it was gaining on them, they got out and crawled under an overpass with others. Based on that footage, it looks like a decent idea, but what most people fail to realize is that was an indirect hit by a F2 tornado. People along I-44 tried this same thing during the 1999 Oklahoma City tornado. One woman was blown out from under the bridge and her body was found days later hundreds of yards away buried underneath debris. Bridges and overpasses actually act as wind tunnels and make a bad situation worse.
Don't get in a car and don't get under a bridge.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 10:28AM@ Ducky:
The link to your article telling people to stay in their cars during a tornado is broken. I wonder why.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 10:30AMDamn nice camera to be carrying around while jogging. Odd. Who does that?
The thing that makes me think they're dumbasses is not that they drove around in the storm (adrenaline can make you do idiotic things), it's that they didn't bother checking a weather report before going out in the first place. It's not like there was no indication outside that a storm might be coming. And every news outlet around that time was telling people to stay the hell inside.
Or, maybe they carried the nice camera because it looked stormy and they were hoping for something to put on youtube, in which case: dumbasses.

The link worked this morning--why would I make it up? I don't really give a flying cow about your education..why don't you to use Google dude..."new tornado safety rules".
This is from the american Red Cross site:
When a Tornado WARNING Is Issued...
If you are inside, go to the safe place you picked to protect yourself from glass and other flying objects. The tornado may be approaching your area.
If you are caught outdoors, seek shelter in a basement, shelter, or sturdy building. If you cannot get to shelter, a recent study* suggests doing the following:
Get into a vehicle, buckle your seat belt, and try to drive at right angles to the storm movement and out of the path.
If strong winds and flying debris occur while you are driving, pull over and park, keeping seat belts on and the engine running. Put your head down below the windows, covering with your hands and a blanket if possible.

Well, I stand corrected. I looked it up and now I see what you're talking about.
I suppose that when it gets right down to it, being stuck outside in a tornado is just dangerous regardless of whether you want to lie in a ditch or drive at a right angle to get out of the way.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 11:04AMWhere are all the videos from the doughy, unattractive folks huddled under their stairs?!? Come on UP... how about some equal time for the non-dumbasses!
And what's with all these attractive dumbasses with cameras and cars and time to jog? Why aren't they at work, commenting on blogs?
The two in the video should be like all of us commenters; pissed off, pedantic and holier than thou.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 11:14AMThanks, Ducky.
Tornillo, I have lived in Texas my entire life, I know what to do, but as Ducky noted, standards change.
People used to get up on roofs in my hometown when the sirens would sound. Again, not safe, but rushing adrenaline makes one do crazy things.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 11:19AMI just signed them to a four-picture deal, with an option to star and direct.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 12 2009 @ 11:21AMI want that camera. Damn, that was nice lush color footage.
