"The Story of the Statler"? Count Me In.

• Other than aesthetics, what's the issue with low ceilings? If I could pay $700 or so to live downtown I could survive with a low ceiling. Not every downtown apartment has to be granite countertops and 20 foot ceilings, with the $1800 a month rent that goes along with it. I guess another issue is that it isn't close to/right on a rail line.

• This would be a difficult and expensive rehabilitation/conversion, especially in these times. There are numerous problems to deal with: no parking, deterioration, low ceilings, etc. But with a great park about to open at its door and increasing downtown amenities, it would be a shame to see this beautiful (and cool) building not put to use. The June 2nd sound interesting.

• Asbestos is but one of the myriad issues confronting anyone interested in rehabbing the Statler. If you click on the link to the Statler in the item above, you'll see, oh, a good dozen-plus pieces I've written over the last couple of years concerning the issues with the Statler, among them low concrete ceilings, years of bird infestation, a water leak that's allegedly done considerable damage to the basement, and years' worth of issues due to there being no electricity in the joint since, oh, its 2001 shuttering.

• Is it totally unfeasible for someone to convert the Statler into some kind of affordable housing? The mid-century modern look is incredible, and the whole place is so cool. I'm guessing asbestos is the issue?
