Right Now, the DISD Board is Probably Yelling At Each Other Behind Closed Doors

DISD board trustee Ron Price
As I noted, earlier Jim's at 3700 Ross Avenue, where, at this very moment, the board of trustees is behind closed doors, no doubt arguing over the ramifications of the Texas Attorney General's opinion that the trustees should not have extended their terms from three years to four last November. Jim filed this moments ago, just as the board disappeared -- "for hours, I fear," said Dr. Schutze, who's too scared to leave and lose his seat in the packed house.
As soon as the meeting began, board president Jack Lowe moved immediately to put the board in executive session. Carla Ranger objected; she said that there was a discussion on the agenda, so, look, she wanted to discuss. They compromised and agreed that the attorneys could describe the AG's opinion for them, then they would go into executive session.

Ron Price arrived late, then said, c'mon, the AG's opinion was not law, so why bother? He said, "I thought all we were here for was to discuss the education of children. I don't quite understand the attention of the media on us folks who don't get paid."

Ranger, with emotion in her voice said, "I am here to talk about democracy." She spoke about how hundreds of thousdands had been deprived of the right to vote -- a right "people died for," she said. "They were killed for it."

Price, though, wanted only to talk about magnet schools, which is later on the agenda. "That's more important than the nine folks who din't get paid to sit up here," said the city council candidate trying to unseat Carolyn Davis in District 7.

"Nothing is more important than living in a country that honors democracy," Ranger countered.

The board heard briefly from two Austin-based attorneys Lowe and Hinojosa hired last week, then disappeared behind closed doors.
Incidentally, we're still waiting on two answers from district spokesman Jon Dahlander: Is the board really considering getting rid of 23 magnet teachers at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (I see Tawnell Hobbs has asked the same question), and where in the hell is the live feed from Ross Avenue? Dahlander will no doubt respond soon as he has both answers -- I allot extra time for W.T. White graduates.

This is misinformation.

BTW has to increase the number of teachers for the number of students.

That's easy. Add more students to the new bigger building.

They can also get rid of the assistant principal and pr person and let the cluster coordinators teach a full load along with the department heads.

They may have to lose a few positions, but not very many.

rw1963 says:

I am so sick of Ron Price's pity parties that I can't stand it. He may not get "paid" directly from the DISD, but he has definitely parlayed his board seat into a fairly lucrative "business" of traveling around the country on the DISD's dime charging up phone bills on his DISD cell phone.

Anyone who still has a shred of respect for this loser needs to read Shutz' description of the Price pair sticking their fingers in their ears and singing "Nah, nah, nah" when he encountered them at a school event. How embarrassing and childish.

Let's hope that he gets run out of his DISD position AND doesn't win his city council bid. And then he can go back to whatever hamburger stand he came from in the first place.

If the voting part is so unimportant, why don't they just vote to make the current board members Members for Life?

Not like anybody can stop them (court orders, should it ever get that far, are also just opinions, after all).

We have reached an all-new low in Dallas politics. This is embarrassing and I am really tired of having to threaten, cajole, and coerce folks into doing the right thing. So, it looks we're going to have to literally take to the streets in protest or go to court to compel an election...wow.

Thank you, Carla, for being a public servant and not a self-servant.

The rest of you DISD trustees should really look yourselves in the mirror and try to remember who you are supposed to be serving.

Carla is about the only sane member of the school board. Shes standing up for the tenets that made this country what it is, maybe she should run for council or dare I say, mayor. Ron Price is nothing but a 2 bit hustler opportunist who'd rather throw out proper civics because he "isnt getting paid", hopefully this is the tide that turns in carolyn davis favor on election day.

Michael123 says:

Had time to ponder over this subject, the only option that should be on the table should be to schedule a special election that should be held no later than August, not in November. With exception of DISD trustees Carla Ranger and Adam Medrano who were the only trustees who voted against extending DISD trustee term limits; the remaining set of DISD trustees (Blackburn, Price, Flores, Ellis, Bingham, Lowe, Garza) have exhibited outright contempt to the voting rights of DISD taxpayer voters throughout the DISD boundary.

The whole key to this issue will be the following:

1. The public must demand for an August special election; not a November special election. DISD taxpayers should pay heed to DISD teacher/community activist Diane Birdwell and get organized and involved in the campaign and election of the next three trustees that will be elected. I propose creating a DISD educational PAC that could be utilized in order to assist DISD common taxpayers to have a voice in electing their respective trustees in these three school districts.

2. DISD taxpayers need to strongly encourage DISD trustees Leigh Ann Ellis, Dr. Lew Blackburn, and Ron Price to put the interest of DISD taxpayers and their students at the top of their priority and vote for the option of the special election to be held sooner than November, preferably in August. Word is Ellis is on the bubble, there are those who say she has had it with the leadership Hinojosa has exhibited in the DISD. Let's hope she can finally tell Jack Lowe to take a hike and not be worried about how Jack Lowe will affect her business if she votes in an independent manner. Ron Price has had a good run at the DISD, time to do the right thing Ron; you're not the same Ron Price that you were before you were first elected to the horseshoe at the DISD who worked the streets to save our youth. We need that Ron Price to come back home. Dr. Blackburn, word on the street is that you place a higher priority on what your boss (Grant East) and what some members of the Dallas business community want in relation to the decisions you make on the horseshoe rather than the needs of DISD common mom and pop taxpayers who work hard to educate their children at the DISD.

Let's hope recommendation number two above is not the case. Let’s hope DISD trustees Carla Ranger, Adam Medrano will now be able to count on the votes of DISD trustees Leigh Ann Ellis, Ron Price, and Dr. Lew Blackburn to schedule a special election as soon as possible, before November. I have no doubt where DISD trustees Jerome Garza, Jack Lowe, and Dr. Edwin Flores will stand on this vote. These guys exemplify misguided decision making that mirrors corruption, self serving, and arrogance at its best.
