Is this smaller-sized store the future of Blockbuster?

Blockbuster held is annual shareholders meeting yesterday, and the presentation was chock-a-block with sneak peeks at the Dallas company's future -- or, at the very least, its plans for the future. After the jump you'll find the complete 31-page presentation offered to shareholders, who were also treated with the video- and game-rental company's first TV and radio ad campaign since forever in which Jim Keyes and company will, at last, take on Netflix with an anyway-you-want-it blitz showcasing the mailbox, set-top box, rental kiosk and plain-ol'-store rental options available at varying pricing plans.

Speaking of, on Page 9 of the presentation you'll find the "Rock the Block" conceptual stores, which Variety's Video Business offshoot describes as half the size of your regular Blockbuster brick-and-mortar, but, like, hipper and stuff -- ya know, with a self-serve beverage bar just like at 7-Eleven, where Keyes used to be boss. Keyes says business is booming at the New York location, but the expansion of the concept -- which you'll also find in Reno, wha? -- will be put on hold till Blockbuster gets its financing in order.

They're on the right track but neighborhood Blockbuster bars/coffee shops is a way to go too. They've got to make their company a social phenomenon again, and one way to do that is to tap into the urban/social/new longing for sense of community thing that's sweeping the country. Companies that are afraid or unable to reinvent will die.

Local BB is a ghost town while across the parking lot in a Thom Thumb is a red rental kiosk that has the latest movies and has a line of people waiting to use it. BB must have POed a lot of people to make them prefer a red machine over one of their outlets.

Keyes is a failure. He's gutted the company. He killed any chance they ever have of getting into the online game. He's putting all his chips into the dying brick-and-mortar. He wants to compete with Starbucks for social/cafe aspect, and against Wal-Mart for retail. Good Luck!

At this point, it's a matter of reinventing themselves and dumping everything that they have.

I can download a movie in two hours at home or hit the cable companies for content. I don't see why I should go through the hassle of going to their stores and getting nailed with all kinds of grief, marketing scams and having to settle for what they have in stock.

If I want something exotic, I just go to eBay or whatever and order it for a few bucks.

Unless they've got digital delivery coming and are selling stuff online, they're screwed.

I didn't read their presentation but I don't think they've gotten over their thing with Enron years back and won't in time to save what they now have.

I order three to four a week from Netflix. Their service is outstanding,considering they are dealing with U.S.Post Office. If they suddenly have a flick that I wish to see just "Rat Now",i can watch it over the internet at my computer desk. No extra money,just my time and inconvenience of not in an easy chair or in bed while I view.

I am a pushover for any firm offering good service. I would never leave Netflix if some outfit offers the same type of movie delivery at a wee bit less cost. I'll dance with the one that brung me.
