His argument about free speech not being the issue unfortunately works both ways. A private service can say these folks don't have the right to discuss any topic they like, but it can also say, "Talk all you want as long as you follow our rules." Facebook has chosen the latter.
And as they specified, going by the laws of certain nations could pretty much limit almost all content since there are numerous nations that frown upon certain topics. Is it really Facebook's place as a private entity to go policing the world of discussion?
Sure these folks are nuts, but then again it is Facebook...
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 11:00AMI 'love' the way rich liberals can play the hate-speech card over anything they find objectionable, run conservative speakers off college campus stages, and still proclaim first amendment protections for their 'brand' of thought. But then I also 'love' the conservative windbags can spout high minded sentiments that are not practical. By the time the next 'special' election comes around, I am willing to bet that being against the city running a hotel will be considered a crime.
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 11:18AMFacebook will die an ignominious death before even one of its users or operators will understand either the intricacies of free speech or the decency of right triumphing wrong. Give it up Brian.
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 11:18AMWhat does "Holocaust Denial" mean? Some are offended when it's pointed out that not only Jews, but Gays, Gypsies, the Disabled among others were also targeted. Investigating these questions is protested by many.
I've read some challenging questions as to whether and to what extent gas chambers were implemented. Knowing the facts here would be interesting and illuminating because if the charges of mass gassing are true, it was done to a crippling effect on the military/industrial needs at the time.
What has perhaps gone over the line on this question is that any investigation of the orthodoxy is immediately decried and marginalized.
As I understand it Stalin similarly killed 12 million Jews but we don't hear much about that. The ADL has vigorously fought against recognition of the Armenian Genocide and all this ignores the worst genocide of all, namely the essential extermination of Native American people from this country.
Is this "holocaust denial"? How does preserving a simple narrative of the holocaust being an unequaled catastrophe perhaps we avoid reflection of our own history and our present policies.
The way Jews were marginalized, isolated, persecuted, seized, attacked, starved, murdered and massacred. Either this was a unique event, or a nasty capacity of so many to commit atrocities in the name of shadowy fears, nationalism and willful ignorance.
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 12:03PMThe way Jews were marginalized, isolated, persecuted, seized, attacked, starved, murdered and massacred [EDIT] WAS PERHAPS THE BEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE WORST OF MEN. Further study and discussion of the Holocaust is commendable and should be encouraged. [END EDIT] Either this was...

That's probably because these "investigations" are frequently promoted by anti-Semitic groups and/or tinfoil hat nutjobs.
But I think that they should be allowed to discuss their theories openly, just like the creationists and other fringe types. And we should be allowed to openly criticize and ridicule them.
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 12:41PMBrian got what he asked for (Facebook blocking certain content by country IP) but not what he wanted (total eradication of anti-holocaust sites). Thus ensues a fit. Boo-hoo.
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 1:18PMWhile we are on that subject, how on Earth is Holocaust denial a crime in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Israel, Slovakia, and Switzerland?
Have these countries criminalized holding a wrong, pigheaded opinion? Stupid, yes, but a crime?
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 1:31PM@ignoreLander They enacted laws because they grasp at straws after looking themselves in the mirror and knowing they still at any moment a year or two away from repeating everything all over again.
Posted On: Friday, May. 8 2009 @ 5:28PMMr. Cuban, if you seriously want to win this debate then stop trying to supress it. Silence will fuel the fires. If it wasn't for such debates we never would have had MLK and blacks would still be riding the back of buses. Open debates are good and you'd be wise to use such platforms to your advantage to mold the minds of America's and the World's youth right now.
