Paying no sales tax really doesn't help the price when one is buying a $50 per pound piece of salmon, farm raised and fed by hand.

You are really still paying sales tax on the furniture, they just reduce the price by whatever the sales tax is.

That's why tax-free weekends are organized by the State and not by private businesses. You can't just decide to, one day just not charge sales tax. The marketing guru who thought this plan up and didn't do some very basic research should maybe go work for some furniture store. They could have marketed as it "tax free" day, and then just taken off 8.5% off of everyone's bill at checkout, but then they would probably loose money because isn't what most of Whole Foods sells, um, food?

actually as a whole foods cashier we did this last year and it wasnt like we just took the tax away and didnt pay it to the state, we just figured out what the tax was and put in a PLU that subtracted the tax off the bill but we as a company paid the tax for the customer

The promotion was to cover everything in the store -- from clothes to food to booze to soaps to meds to you name it.

I too wanted to point out that most of their sales are likely untaxed. I don't think the comptroller gives a whoop who pays the sales tax, so long as it's paid where/when due.

The sales tax Whole Foods does pay is likely very close to if not more than it's profit margin. Since most grocers historically only operate on a 1-2% margin.
