Even if George Gimarc Has to Do It Alone, He Won't Let The Edge's 20th Go Unnoticed

Now, don't ask too many questions at this point about who's playing; George isn't working with a lot of money (so far, this is being done without Clear Channel's okee-doke), and he's calling around to cash in as many favors as possible before setting in stone the guest list. (Though, if you're a member of an early '90s Dallas band who, say, once appeared on a Tales From the Edge compilation and are free July 3, do let George hear from ya.) Mr. Gimarc also expects to make all manner of goodies available to those of us nostalgists who'd like to own "old 94.5 bumper stickers, shirts and other stuff" dating back nearly 20 years that George says "was recently found in storage." (Mmmmm, musty.)
Early ticket-buyers may also receive a special treat -- a CD of George's making featuring sounds from The Edge's first hours on the air, depending on how all this shakes out. Till then, he has posted to the party page lengthy audio of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook performing at J. Pepe's waaaay back when -- a delightful flashback at the end of a Friday. Also, dig the pics. He's adding to the photo album every day. Oh, look -- Josh Venable with The Edge. Cute.

Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 6:08PMI have an old 45 minute tape I made of the new KDGE 94.5 from a few days after the launch (July 3 1989). At the point, there still weren't any DJs on the air. It was such a better station until it got sold in the late '90s and became pretty "cookie-cutter sounding"...

Looks like the new format will come Monday...Cumulus co-owned WNNX 100.5 Atlanta morning show ("The Regular Guys") will be simulcast on 93.3 starting Monday morning. "Quality Rock" WNNX is sort of a classic rock/AAA hybrid (sort of "the Bone" mixing in stuff from the pre-"Bone" AAA "93-3 the Zone" and "Merge" failed formats).
It looks like Cumulus has already registered FM933qualityrock.com. So, one would think some sort of clone of WNNX is coming here.

Interestingly, CBS owns AAA WZGC "92.9 Dave FM" in Atlanta...which soundly beats WNNX.
what happened to "echoes and reverberations" this week?
i heard it was supposed to be a story about shallow reign.
As someone who spends lots of time in ATL, I've often thought that "Dave FM" format would play well here.
It's sort of a Jack FM playlist, more tightly focused on 80's punk/new wave, through today's AOR/AAA stuff. Plus they actually have an appealing roster of on-air talent.
Pity the Edge didn't take that track instead of focusing on their all butt-rock format.

Posted On: Sunday, Apr. 26 2009 @ 11:01AMI have all the Tales from the Edge CDs. I respect George but for probably 17 of those 20 years, the Edge has played Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" every single day. Nothing is wrong with the song itself, but it is just crazy how many times the Edge has played it.
For our 20th year present, can they finally fire Jessie?

Can you imagine celebrating your kid's 20th birthday when he's locked into a six year old mental development stage? You have to throw the party but the occasion only invites more tales of regret and lost opportunity.
I reamin mildly interested in seeing who's going to both George's event and Edgefest 19 w/ Korn at Pizza Hut Park in effin Frisco. Look for me at both - I'll be the guy with the Cheerios shirt and a special 20th anniversary hi-top fade.

When Gimarc left(or forced out, if you believe the stories) back in the mid-90s, it began to feel off-kilter. I know Jeff K is trying to recapture lightning in a bottle with his sunday morning show and programming changes, but it isnt the same station. Most of that can be blamed on Cheap Channel, as they sanitize anything that has some amount of originality...
That being said, I wouldnt mind seeing the "Tales From" Anthology of albums come back into existance. Start showcasing local talent again and putting them in the forefront of the music public..
Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 8:54AMI miss the early to mid-90s radio. Dallas radio has sucked since then. (And ffs, the Bone/93.3/"whatever the hell it is now" needs to stick to a damn format for more than 2 seconds)
Internet radio has been kicking the ass of regular radio for years, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
