The HSUS has run a campaign of terror that is now taking on the look of the Brown Shirts of Germany in 1923.

They have attacked breeders and pet store owners until now people think they are less than human and they get what they deserve.

This is building up and the windows will get broken, Like "Crystal Night" and someone will die. Already millions of now died from the hands of NAZI Oprah and the HSUS Euthanasia Program. In their death camps for dogs. The Humane Society...

These wacko evil people of the HSUS are trying to kill every dog in America and the bleeding heart liberal, who See's themselves as a Animal Lover is unwittingly being duped into demonstrating against people who do a better job in caring for their animals everyday than most people do for their own children.

There is always mention of the dogs in the shelters... where do you suppose they come from?

Breeders don't pack the shelters, Pet Land does not pack the shelters.. Look around you people who are selfish, unloving, hard and mean spirited people dump their dogs opposed to caring for them as they should. Maybe look in the mirror maybe you yourself have dumped a dog or a cat in your life time..

People lets stop trying to kill Ford Motor Company because someone may have been injured in a car accident. Demonstrating against Pets stores and Breeders is no different.

I suggest that everyone reading this go to Pet land and buy a dog maybe two. They will be good pets and you will be happy you did.

"When they took it to a vet" when and why did they take it to a vet, the same day, did the dog get hit by a car, did the children fall on it and injure the poor dog, was it poisened? Or what was the puppy returned during the guarantee period? Did your friend make sure the puppy had received all of its shots and was properly cared for?

The puppy mills have gotten away for so long with abusing dogs and selling sick animals. But now the truth is coming out and they are angry!

Many of them take advantage of lax regulations, and have been able to make millions by hurting dogs, and they have never been held accountable.

Thanks to lack of regulation they also have been hiding their incomes and cheating on taxes.

The dog breeding world is an ugly one built on much deceit. This is why the breeders and pet stores hire lobbyists, to cover up the problems and lie about the issues.

And also to oppose regulation. Regulation would reduce the abuse and tax cheating, and the breeding industry doesn't want that.

Puppy mill breeders are on the attack. It's a very ugly situation.

Petland and the puppy mills hire a lobbyist who is also a tobacco industry lobbyist! This is the kind of deception going on by these pet stores and breeders.

These protests are HSUS propoganda. Petland does not sell puppies that come from puppy mills. They sell from breeders that meet USDA standards. And any breeder they find that doesn't, they put them on a Do Not Buy list that is distributed to all of the franchise owners.

The HSUS supposed investigation of the kennels Petland buys puppies from was completely misleading. The video that the HSUS distributed showed sick puppies and kennels that had nothing to do with Petland, but put Petland's name on it anyway.

And when Petland asked for the HSUS information on who the bad breeders were and where the sick puppies were, the HSUS would not give it to them. The HSUS does not want to help animals. It just wants to put it's name out there to fundraise and pay the salaries of it's employees.

So stop this nonsense of protesting Petland. They want to stop substandard breeders too. Join Petland in the fight.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that Animal Rights folks would rather see a child die than a dog.

Why don't these "activists" help with the over breeding problems in Dallas neighborhoods? There are sick abandoned dogs and cats all over Dallas. I found 5 pitt bulls last year alone that I had to call the city to come get. No tags, no identification and 3 where pregnant. That's where the real problem lies. And when a dog bites or kills someone its their fault, not the dog(s).

So instead of going to a rally with your friends and yelling a lot, how about educating people and promoting more spay and neutering? Not as fun?

Joe, while I detest your Libertarian ways (another word for Republican really), I understand your frustration with the Animal Rights crowd. Like the assholes who put foot long metal spikes in trees so that the chain-saw a logger is using will break and kill him, these Animal Rights people are just as crazy. It is clear that you are not a student of history, and you fail to see... oops... you can't see the comparison, (silly me) because you don't know what I am talking about. I will try to help you out of this quandary

The Nazi's are bad guys, they have killed millions of people because they used a method of advertising that made it politically correct to hate Jews and other people who were not approved by the Nazi's.

The HS uses the same formula against Pet Stores and Breeders, calling them names and making up stories that are not true. So in the end people who are lacking in education and a formal critical thought process become dangerous to people whom they know nothing about except the propaganda that has been poured into their little head.

And these people use scary names like Mush Mouth to try to intimidate those who may disagree with them. (Just an example)

Now lets look at how dangerous these people are:
1. The HS people get up everyday and they kill animals, not because they are sick, although some are from the mistreatment in their filthy facilities, but more so they kill them because they are not convenient to care for. Anybody remember Charlie Manson?

2. In every book about human behaviors, you will find warnings about people who kill animals not for food but to entertain themselves, promote themselves socially or because to care for the animal is inconvenient.
The HS claims to kill helpless animals everyday 4 to 6 million a year. You don't see anything wrong with that?

Moving on here, Most breeders and people who love and care for Gods creatures everyday avoid the harshness of public confrontation.

They have a hard time understanding why these AR people exist and why they are not actually doing anything to help... opposed to killing and harming the animals.

The world is not a perfect place agreed?

To pursue a better world for both animals and people would be a good job. Getting everyone to agree on the how to is the problem.

I will personally not tolerate threats, violence, intimidation, theft, lies and or deceit and unlike most breeders I will be dead in your face to protect those who are weak and cannot defend themselves from the bullies... who use such tactics.

We have had drive by shootings, kennels burned, death threats just to name a few, we have seen people trespass and steal dogs, get hired under false pretense to wreck the facility and then call the authorities to report the problem. We have seen wholesale theft of dogs right here in Texas by your Dallas SPCA, and in Texas breeders have not rights to defend themselves or to regain their property or sue for damages.

Hey Mush would you like it if we came to your house and took all of your belongings because we simply think you maybe a bad guy? but no worry you have no rights to fight back in Texas. You'd be done simple as that...

So if you think the AR people are going to keep getting away with this stuff... I gotta a news flash for ya.

Breeders and Pet Store in America have the right to exist and they have the right to do so without fear of their property being seized or harassment either physical or otherwise by the AR people or their agents. And the sleeping giant has been awakened, breeders and Pet Stores, Brokers, Kennel Supply Companies, Pet Transportation companies, Dog food companies, and the list is almost endless are not going to allow the American Pet Industry to be destroyed by a bunch of crazy AR people

And yes I hope the Jewish community sees the alarming behavior of these people, It started small in Germany as well, Dog breeders and Pet Stores now...who will be next? You Mush?

This blog started as a continuation discussion of an article referrring to a protest being held at the Petland store in Plano. This protest was part of what appears to be a coordinated effort led by the HSUS.

The basis for the protest is an HSUS report suggesting Petland was purchasing puppies from puppy mills. In this report, the HSUS reported of instances where a few Petlands, in the northern part of the country, supposedly purchased puppies from substandard breeders. As a result of this report, the HSUS seems to have declared all Petland guilty by association.

With regards to the report from the HSUS, it is my understanding, based on information found on the Internet, that no documented proof of any kind has been released by HSUS to validate the claims they make in the so called "investigative" report. The USDA has not received any information regarding substandard conditions at any of the kennels mentioned in the report, so they cannot investigate to make sure the wellfare of animals has been addressed from an enforcement perspective. It is also been discovered that the video footage used in the report to show substandard breeders was not taken as part of the "investigation" and in some cases, was shot over 20 years ago! Much of the video shown in the report has been used over and over again by the HSUS for just about any report they placed on their website.

In Petland's defense, they have repeatedly asked for the docuemtation from the report so they can take actions themselves and have yet to be provided anything from HSUS.

Some of you may not know it, but the HSUS is not affiliated with any locale humane societies in the country. With a name "Humane Society of the United States", there is a natural tendency for just about everyone to believe they represent the national organization of the local humane societies. The HSUS operate no shelters or kennels. If you poke around on the internet, you can also see that the HSUS is one of the best funded organizations in the country, with assets in stocks and bonds in excess of $100 million! You can also see, on the HSUS website (based on their 2006 tax return), that most of the money collected by the HSUS is spent on the following: salaries and benefits, travel expenses, campaigns (mailing, donation collection, etc). In 2006, the HSUS collected ~$90 million in donations. Of the money collected, ~$82 million was spent on the items above.

So, for the Petlands that were blessed with protesters this weekend, is there any real proof these locations are supporting substandard breeders or are we just getting caught up in the "crowd mentality" and trying to place blame where it is not warranted? Can the protesters be making better use of their time by doing things like raising money for shelters, working adoption days at the shelters, volunteering at the shelters, etc.

And finally, are the protesters even sure they are having the negative impact they are looking for? You never know, but there might be a lot of people out there that actually stopped by the store because they didn't know it was there until they saw the protesters. I was one of those people that had no idea the store was there until I saw the protesters outside. The protesters proved to be the best advertisment for the store. I decided to check out the store after seeing the protesters and was impressed with the store and the people that worked there.

Joe Overlease. You are a tool. Just from the example you have presented on this board is proof positive that you should not be allowed any animals at all. You seem like a bitter person who just got busted.

I am glad this is educating people about puppy mills. They are horrible but create great profits.

And the comment about people caring more about the death of an animal. That is so ignorant. You must be this board's scum.

There is a severe pet overpopulation problem in this country today. An estimated 6-8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year. Only 3-4 million are adopted. The remaining 3-4 million are euthanized. No shelter wants to euthanize animals, but it is a necessity that needs to be done until we as individuals and as a community do something about it.

Buying an animal from a pet store or breeder increases the pet overpopulation problem. For every dog or cat you buy from a pet store or breeder, a dog or cat in a shelter dies. There are simply too many dogs and cats in shelters to be breeding more. Pet stores such as Petland need to stop selling animals.

Next time you decide to add a new family member in your home, adopt from a shelter instead of buying from a pet store or breeder. Consider not shopping for pet supplies at irresponsible pet stores that sell animals.

I'm not. Every Libertarian I know used to be one. As a matter of fact, "W" is really the Libertarians' best friend. He has gotten them more members than anything.

Is it just possible that you can have responsible breeding and pet stores or must everyone get their dogs from shelters?

It seems to me that people who are the most passionate regarding the elimination of puppy mills see any commercial breeder of puppies as running a puppy mill. Is it possible these breeders can humanely treat their animals and still make money and not be running a puppy mill? At one time, the term puppy mill meant a substandard breeder that cared little for the animals wellbeing. I think the use of the term has been broadened over the years to encompass any person who breeds for profit, regardless of how the animals are treated. If there are truly breeders out their that do not care about the wellbeing of the animals in their charge, who breed them without care, without proper shelter and propoer socialization, then lets apply the term "puppy mill" appropriately to these individuals and work to stop what they are doing. But if a breeder truly cares for the animals in their charge, breeds them in a humane way, provides proper shelter and proper socialization, then lets leave them alone because they are doing this the right way.

For those people who get a puppy from a shelter, I applaud them. But the truth is that not everyone wants a shelter animal, contrary to some people's wishes. So, shouldn't these people be able to get a puppy from a breeder and a store that cares about the animals in their care?

In the North Texas area, hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs are killed each year. There is no logic to having the word "responsible" precede the word "breeder" while this is happening. There is no such thing.

Healthy, sweet, loving animals are killed in municipal shelters every hour, every day. All the while, the breeders continue their reprehensible "hobby" of facilitating the production of more, more, more litters of unwanted animals into an area already saturated with them.

Due to lack of oversight or regulation, it is a very lucrative hobby that provides the breeders with a lot of tax free money - blood money earned by exploiting the helpless. They do not take kindly to being asked to give up this easily-acquired filthy lucre - so the hideous suffering of those with no voice continues.

As someone who has seen first-hand how Petland was treating their animals, had a daughter that bought a puppy from Petland (that had health and housebreaking issues) and as someone that has no ties to HSUS I would like to add the following:

No matter where the puppies come from, the way they are housed and treated when they are housed at Petland is inexcusable. I stumbled upon the Lewisville store when I was driving by and was looking for a leash for one of my rescue animals, and I left shaking because of what I witnessed. Tiny Maltese and Yorkie puppies kept in cages with grates as floors that made them try to balance on a wire so they didn't get stuck in the larger than their paws holes in the floor. Babies taken from their mothers with only a plastic tub to sit, stand or sleep in. The only water source being a rodent waterer coming out of the wall in the back of the cages - never a natural way for a dog to drink.

What I think is so ironic is that if you go to most shelters, the animals there aren't kept on grates and many get blankets, toys, an adequate water supply and areas where they can go out and play.

No matter what type animal you are talking about, the qualifier should be quality of life. I can't stop thinking about the traumatic life that poor Maltese puppy is having that I saw at Petland, but I know if I paid a ridiculous amount to save her Petland will only use that money to put more animals into slavery.

Many people don't realize that there are rescue groups for almost any purebred animal as well as mixed breeds. Adopting a pet is a life-long decision and not one to be entered into lightly which is what the Petland employees try to talk you in to.

Dear 'Overcoming Cruelty':

We're going to have to agree to disagree on one point. I believe that there ARE 'responsible' breeders. How can you sit there and say 'only' adopt from a shelter? If everyone did that then who would produce more companion animals eventually once all of the shelter dogs were adopted?

We have to activate on a 'balanced' level. What we're fighting here are two things. One is the overpopulation of dogs who are produced in the 10,000 puppy mills in our country per year (2 to 3 million, while 3 to 4 million are killed in shelters) and the other is the suffering of the breeding mothers who spend their lives living in cages in puppy mills for 10 to 12 years, plus the sick puppies they produce.

The shame is NOT on the 'responsible' breeders who only produce minimally.

I am on the front lines fighting against puppy mills and the stores who support them, but I will not point my finger at those who are doing things the right way. I applaud responsible breeders who are sure their breeding mothers are living with them in their home and are careful to only sell to customers who they personally meet and who meet the breeding mother of the puppy they buy. This is the right and honorable way to produce companion animals.

I am in no way a breeder, so don't go there. I am just a smart animal advocate who ALWAYS stays in balance.

It is hard to believe the level of ignorance exposed by the "Joe the Breeders" on this blog!

To anyone who doubts that Petland buys from puppymills, I ask you this: if the HSUS put out a false story about your business, and that false story were damaging, would you not sue them? The only Petland lawsuit I am aware of is that of the Petland franchise owners - who, in a class action suit, accuse Petland of making them sell sick animals.

In point of fact, In Defense of Animals has been following Petland for years. The HSUS story just confirms what those in the animal rights and animal welfare community have long suspected: "reputable" breeders do not sell through a petstore.

I encourage everyone to adopt and save a life. However, those who are committed to buying their next companion animal should at least make a point of meeting the breeder, visiting the facility, and meeting the mother before spending a dime.

Anyone who thinks the Humane Society is creating controversy where there is none should probably be committed to an asylum.

There is plenty of animal abuse anywhere you look without having to make issues up. If puppy mills were NOT abusing animals, HSUS would use their time going after other animal abusers.

Petland has been exposed. Sometimes reality is ugly. Rather than pretend it's not true, let's deal with the facts and improve things. I won't be buying my dogs anything at Petland until they clean up their act, that's for sure.

I hope you will be joining us tomorrow (Jan. 24) from 12-2pm at the Plano Petland protest...and every Sat. until they permanently close their doors, and then we will move on to the next one...and so on, until they are all closed as well as the puppy mills. The public is finally understanding the cruelty behind these pet stores and they are not standing for it anymore! We must stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves! Spread the word!
