On Friday, J.P. Morgan Chase announced it's shuttering 23 Washington Mutual locations in Dallas and another six in Fort Worth by the end of March. Only, it didn't say where, just that it was letting customers know, so there. Alas, Friend of Unfair Park Steven R. just snapped this photo of one defunct WaMu box at Greenville Avenue and Milton Street -- you recall, former site of The Fare? Says Steven, "I know! Let's tear it down and build a gas station." Or a strip club.
Update: A good Friend of Unfair Park who's seen the list of closures says WaMu is shedding some 43 locations in the DFW.
Barbara B, that has got to be the worst sequence of logic I have seen. But personally, I prefer Wells Fargo because I like the cute horses in the company logo. Aren't horses grand?
I loved WaMu because it was a Seattle company and I love the Pacific Northwest. But I don't want to bank at Chase because it is a New York bank, and Wall Street has caused a lot of trouble lately. I've already switched to Compass.
There is also the WaMu that was built right in front of the Home Depot on Skillman just north of Loop 12 that never opened. They are also building a brand new Chase branch right down the street at Larmanda.
He did not have the list on him -- he knew it to be at least 43 locations, possibly a few more. Hence, my use of the word "some." Could have said, um, "more like about," but "some" just did something for me, as I attempted to sum up the update.
as an aside, is it "some 43" locations ... or is it really just "43 locations"?
i guess "some" adds gravitas where there is none
Yep it's hard to enjoy a meal on Terilli's patio looking at that monstrosity across the street. And then there's the giant Wachovia sign on the corner of Belmont and Abrams (at least that could be turned back into something).
Thank God the banks are tanking now or we would have many more to come. Now, if the drugstores and fast food joints would just dry up. I mean how is a CVS/KFC/LJS combo better than the Wilshire Theater?
OK I am stretching on that one...
I guess the decision that every street corner in Dallas needed at least 3 banks didn't pan out too well.
It's only "fare" -- hyuck hyuck.
Bring back Confetti - or even LouAnn's.
The branch on Lemmon @ Knight is being merged into the branch at Lomo Alta and Lemmon (near the Whole Foods).
The branch at Hillside Village (Mockingbird @ Abrams) is not closing, since their customer base is different than the Chase branch about 100 yards down the street.
The WaMu on Skillman & Audelia is closing as of February 11, 2009. That is my primary branch and I received the notice yesterday.
I hope that karma jumps into action and all of the stupid WaMu bank buildings in Dallas are occupied by tasty greasy spoon diners.
Love the shot, a defunct "bank" on the site of an old skin club next to a pawn shop. WaNoooooooooo.
This branch never opened. But until today I thought it would eventually open as a WaMu. So, does it count toward the 23 if it never took a penny or deposits or funded a single failed loan?
How about a CVS? That way there is one on each side of Greenville!
I can do you one better: on Audelia at Walnut Hill, there is a WAMU directly across the street from a Chase. We're talking 30 yards or so.
I think it is safe to say that the one in West Village is a gone because there is already a Chase branch there but then again when Chase acquired Bank One years ago they kept the branches two blocks apart on Perl and Woodall, so who knows.
I found this out a few weeks ago when I pulled into this location to get some cash and they were shut down for good. I have to keep reminding myself I can use Chase banks as well these days.
