Dave Moore on FrontBurner wonders why "North Texas always seems to get its snout into" a big national news story -- like, say, the tale of the US Airways plane that took a dip in the Hudson River yesterday. Actually, there's a pretty good explanation in the Herald Democrat up Sherman-Denison way today as it relates to the story of captain Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, whose family goes way, way back up thataway:Sullenberger's grandparents and great grandparents, the Hannas, were a pioneering Denison family, with a street named after them.
Denison resident Jean Banfield said she remembered Sullenberger from his days in the church's youth group and that he always showed an interest in aviation. "He was just determined he was going to go to the Air Force Academy. And he did," she said.
Former Denison Herald Editor Donna Hunt said she was watching television coverage of the plane crash about 6 p.m. when she heard a reporter give the pilot's name as Chesley Sullenberger III and the name rang a bell. Hunt works with the Denison High School Alumni Association.
Update: Oh, and his sister lives in Dallas.
