The Only Thing Better Than a New Newspaper Is a Really, Really Old One

On this decidedly slow news day during which everyone's running out the clock before bidding 2008 good riddance, perhaps this offering from the Wayback Machine's just the ticket: a look at the front page of the Fort Worth Daily Gazette from December 30, 1883. I stumbled across it early this morning while looking for something else on the Library of Congress's Web site, where, as it turns out, the LOC and the National Endowment for the Humanities are in the process of Chronicling America, or gathering and offering "historically significant newspapers from all the states and U.S. territories published between 1836 and 1922."
There are but a handful of Texas papers available thus far; this one's as close to home as it gets (with news from Plano even, right on the front page). The perfect time-kill for those killing time. --Robert Wilonsky
