Texas Fight: After "Freakiness" in Dallas, Recruit Chose OU Over UT

Categories: Sports
JamarkusMcFarland.jpgLufkin High School's Jamarkus McFarland, a highly coveted defensive tackle, committed to the University of Oklahoma yesterday; Merry Christmas, Sooner Nation. And it's a double kick to the Longhorns' pants: The University of Texas had hoped to land the 6-foot-3, 280-pounder, but instead a post-Texas-OU party in Dallas helped McFarland decide to move to Norman instead of Austin. He even wrote a paper for his English class about the shindig, which The New York Times excerpts in its behind-the-scenes account of McFarland's recruiting process:

"I will never forget the excitement amongst all participants," McFarland wrote. "Alcohol was all you can drink, money was not an option. Girls were acting wild by taking off their tops, and pulling down their pants. Girls were also romancing each other. Some guys loved every minute of the freakiness some girls demonstrated. I have never attended a party of this magnitude."

He continued: "The attitude of the people at the party was that everyone should drink or not come to the party. Drugs were prevalent with no price attached."
Incidentally, that's precisely how I was enticed to attend UT. But McFarland, his mother and grandmother said, Unh-unh. And, as evidenced by the photo accompanying the piece, SMU tried to recruit McFarland as well -- how adorable. --Robert Wilonsky
